Two More:  Cowboy Junkies Lament by TVZ

Flowered Dresses:  Written by Karen Posten from Austin, but Slaid does the better version.  Her version is kind of happy....his isn't.  Especially the line,

"And I was sitting in the hallway on the night he left
Huggin my knees, holding my breath
I never knew why but he was damn sure gone
Thought it was maybe my fault"

Used to see Karen and her band @ the Carousel Lounge.... more years ago than I care to admit. Really talented.

The Grand Tour.  May be the greatest of all time feel bad songs.

Anytime you have a kid in the mix, that song is going to rip your heart out.

When I saw the thread title my first thoughts were Grand Tour and TVZ's Marie (already posted above).  Here is a nice little version of Grand Tour

Richard Buckner. Proof that tortured souls make incredible music. The Hill is an incredible album (not written by RB, but just incredibly emotional). His early albums truly capture his struggle.

Lyrics for 22

The kitchen drawers were open
Hot water in the bath
And the phone call that you promised me
I'd given up on at last

I was only 22
All undone and overdue
My friends all burned around me
And the smoke was full of you
But let's stop here for a prayer
For what happened there
And let us have a beer
For anyone who's still here

Well I didn't leave a letter
I just wrote my baby's name
On the mirror all steamed over
With water, heat and shame

And all hopes were long-time missing
They'd had enough of me
I found them hanging through the moon
From the Hooker oak tree

The knife was on the basin
Wrapped in my baby's towel
My friend the water let me in
And I lowered myself down

'Cause you can drink and you can shake
And you can dry up bitter tears
But the first to pass right through you
Will age you fifty years
And you could say, 'well I don't know
You got to love just the same'
But I say all I got
Was a phone call that never came

The towel was lying open
And it didn't hurt so bad
There was red smoke in the water
And all the things we'd had

Now honey you don't need this heart
Now that I'm dead and gone
So dig me up and give me back
What I never should've lost

I was falling asleep
You see I felt a little weak
I closed my eyes and thought of you
As the phone let out a ring

"Waiting 'Round to Die" was the first one I thought of. It is utterly bleak on the level of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road." In an interview Townes was asked why his songs were all so sad. He responded, in part, "I don't think they're all that sad. I have a few that aren't sad, they're like... hopeless. Totally hopeless situation and the rest aren't sad they're just the way it goes."

This song rips your heart out but I love it so, so much. Lennon sings about his mother who turned over custody of John to his aunt and was killed in a car crash and his father who abandoned the family when John was 5. The primal scream outro always gives me chills.

The live performance is worth watching also.

Converge's "Thousands of Miles Between Us" is lyrically brutal.

We fell in and out of touch
Our distance never meant too much
I always wanted to be more
Than what you were searching for
I know you never wanted this
But thank you for giving me your best
I knew that you always loved me
Though you never said that you did

There is no place in this world to hide
My shattered smile that life provides
Stand up straight take it on the chin
Pick up my teeth and start again

I never knew the reasons why
Somewhere we both stopped trying
But when you said that you were dying
I said that I loved you

There is no place in this world to hide
My shattered smile that life provides
Stand up straight take it on the chin
Pick up my teeth and start again

Just start again

Numbness makes some sense
Without a consequence
Something not meant to be
Found a way to breathe
Numbness makes some sense
Without a consequence
Something not meant to be
Found a way to breathe

Thousands of miles between us
Between us

There is no place in this world to hide
My shattered smile that life provides
Stand up straight take it on the chin
Pick up my teeth and start again

Just start again

Queens of the Stone Age "...Like Clockwork" is also pretty sad:

Everyone it seems
Has somewhere to go
And the faster the world spins
The shorter the lights will glow
And I’m swimming in the night
Chasing down the moon
Deeper in the water
The more I long for you

Most of what you see my dear is purely for show
Because not everything that goes around comes back around you know
Holding on too long is just fear of letting go
Because not everything that goes around comes back around you know
One thing that is clear it’s all down hill from here

Love in your hand cleverly disguised
All the promises of stone crumble in the light

Most of what you see my dear
Is worth letting go
Because not everything that goes around comes back around you know
Holding on too long is just
Fear of wanting to show
Because not everything that goes around comes back around you know
Not everything that goes around comes back around you know
One thing that is clear
It’s all down hill from here

Some of the most bitter, pessimistic, shoulder-shrugging lyrics in any song. But they're so fucking clever and they're all sung with a wink and a smile.

Also, tons of Dylan: With God on Our Side, Most of the Time, Not Dark Yet, Things Have Changed, Hurricane, If You See Her Say Hello, and The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.

Exemplar Lyrics:

Sundown, yellow moon
I replay the past
I know every scene by heart
They all went by so fast

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

Most of the time
I'm halfway content
Most of the time
I know exactly where it all went
I don't cheat on myself
I don't run and hide
Hide from the feelings
That are buried inside
I don't compromise
And I don't pretend
I don't even care
If I ever see her again
Most of the time

There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there
Well my sense of humanity is going down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing, there's been some kind of pain

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed

Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
Where justice is a game
