PJ Fleck likes traditions, and he might just get introduced to a little tradition known as the overmatched B1G team against an SEC team in a bowl game in Florida. Their opponent could be on about the scale of Florida or Auburn depending on how the selections shake out.

Fleck's OC from his time at Western Michigan was hired away by Penn State, and he has promoted a couple of guys on that side of the staff to new roles.

The final ranking projections have Minnesota in the top 15 range for the end of the season.

Gophers coach P.J. Fleck hires Mike Sanford from Utah State, promotes Matt Simon for coordinator role

The Gophers announced Friday that Mike Sanford, the offensive coordinator at Utah State, will become the Gophers OC and quarterbacks coach. He fills the spot that Kirk Ciarrocca, Fleck's right-hand man for seven years, vacated when he took the same job at Penn State last week.

Matt Simon, who stepped into the position on an interim basis for the Outback Bowl, will remain as wide receivers coach but also becomes the co-offensive coordinator.

Fleck signed an extension right before the Penn State game that many thought would be the high tide or peak of his personal stock value as a head coach. But after he won that game and finished the season strong his value has only gone up. Depending on how some dominoes fall after the NFL does its coach hiring season, if some big college coaches get poached then Fleck would be one of the hottest prospects for any school with an opening.

Why has this ever been a thread?

You're kidding, right? Have you not followed Fleck's career? Did you miss the thread on the old site about WMU being the new place with new traditions? It was funny at the time but then in four years Fleck went from 1-11 to 13-0 and a MAC Championship.

He's a unique coach and isn't finished writing his story. If he stays at Minnesota then I think a B1G West title is probably in his future. See if you can find the mini-series "Being P.J. Fleck" that aired on both ESPN and BTN. He's an interesting dude and he's actually not as flakey as he seemed when he started his head coaching career in Kalamazoo.

I was listening to the local sports talk radio shows doing previews of the B1G conference games over the past couple weeks. The build up to the season opener against Michigan had many of the opinion guys going on about how Harbaugh has struggled to meet expectations and needed wins sooner than many other guys. Fleck had built up the Minnesota team to the point where they should have been even or better than the Wolverines on paper, like in the preseason magazines.

The B1G West is wide open in this joke of an exhibition season they are putting on to salvage some television money or the conference thinks it can sneak Ohio State into the playoffs. This is an opportunity for a team like Northwestern to get whatever the prize is for winning the Division.

Ohio State is so far ahead of everyone else in that POS, it's ridiculous.
