2018 - 2019 Dallas Mavericks: Throw Some D's

Really enjoying watching this young team.

And hell the second team looks almost as good as the first team for stretches...and that's without Dirk and Harris. Plus some one is moving down when Barnes comes back.

They're probably not going to go on any kind of run to the playoffs, but they'll be a tough team to face each night.

In Atlanta on business and went to the game tonight, a few things I noticed:

  • This was Atlanta's home opener in a newly $200mm renovated and rebranded State Farm Arena. The game environment/experience was pretty awesome. Makes AA look old and dated (and the jumbotron small, and also speaking of the Mercedes Benz Stadium where the Falcons play is beautiful and there is a cool Klyde Warren looking area that connects the two).
  • The crowd was both late to show up and deflated by the 1st quarter. Most people were there by halftime to see Future perform, it seems, and by the end of the 3rd, it was the full house and the energy was there. The second half of 4th quarter the place was rocking and everyone was on their feet.
  • Trae Young looked like dog shit compared to Luka. He was frustrated/rattled early, and until the 4th quarter had like 4 points or something. He's a streaky player who got hot in the 4th, but Luka is pound for pound the better basketball player, value and future. Would never, in any scenario, swap those two. Luka dazzled with a double double or damn near, Young had a few Hot Sauce moves and layups. Big whoop. His value was on a couple of great passes he made more than anything else.
  • Kent Bazemore had the game of his career; can't do much about that.
  • Taurean Prince was the best basketball player on the floor for both teams. He has all the potential in the world and was fun to watch.
  • The worst thing that could have happened was Matthews making that wild 3 early on because he went back to it way too much and missed every other one. DSJ is good, he's young, but at this point in his development it looks like his ceiling is a poor man's Russell Westbrook. If you are going to have a game like Doodie, you gotta be great though, you can't be poor.
  • If this game was at home, we close it out and win. You forget how small basketball arena's are and how loud/energy can rattle players, especially guys like Maxi and Powell in late trying to close it out.
  • DeAndre Jordan is huge and somewhat quietly had a nice double double.
  • The food at the stadium was the overdone and blase gourmet southern/country and it was slow, overpriced and not that great.

wes matthews needs to be gone asap.  the guy is just taking minutes from guys we might want in the future. he has 1 good game out of about 8.

Carlisle loves him for whatever reason. Hopefully his usage goes way down once Barnes comes back tomorrow. JJ was also awful yesterday with a spectacular 1-10 from the floor. Our 2 most veteran players really killed us.

agreed JJ was bad but he's an off the bench energy guy.  usually fairly solid from what I see.  not that he's a better shooter than Wes.

problem is Wes was supposed to be a very good starter, defensive stopper and good 3 pt shooter.  I can only imagine the numbers show he plays really good defense for Carlisle to not look at options.

JJ had the same thing happen, he hit a big 3 and then kept chucking them up afterwards.

Wes has a place in the rotation, but that place is not leading the team in field goal attempts through 4 games.  A big part of this is that Luka has been very passive for long stretches ( normal for a rookie trying to find his way), and DSJ hasn’t been playing well.  Once Barnes is back and playing 30+ minutes/game, and when Dirk eventually makes it back, the shot distribution should look something like this:

Tier 1: Luka/DSJ/Barnes. Offense runs through these 3.  If this team is clicking, they should all be averaging 18-20 ppg. As the year progresses, I would hope that Luka/DSJ overtake Barnes and establish themselves as the clear 1-2 punch, but currently they are all equal.

Tier 2: JJ/Dirk/Wes.  Secondary scorers with less minutes than tier 1.  You could actually talk me into leaving Finney-Smith with the starters and moving Wes to the second unit.  Whoever is playing better that night gets the crunch time minutes.  Dirk is obviously the wild card here, and if he is feeling it on any given night you just roll with it.

Tier 3: Deandre/Powell.  Run to the rim.  Catch lobs.  Dunk the ball as often as you can.

Tier 4: Finney-Smith/Broekhoff/Kleber/Brunson.  Take the wide open (emphasis on wide open) 3 when it’s there.

The problem is without Barnes there is not a single ISO player with experience and at times you gotta have a guy that can.  When Barnes comes back Wes should ONLY be shooting wide open 3's.

And fuck all that "We should have Trae Young" crap I saw on twitter last night.  Dude was nonexistent until really late...but he had a bad night too.
