Bad Times at the El Royale

Drew Goddard's latest. Saw it today. Beautifully filmed. Strong performances throughout (Cynthia Erivo was a revelation; Bridges & Hamm did solid character work). Big homage to Key Largo. I initially liked its pace & lingering shots --DP Seamus McGarvey works a beautiful palette of modern noir images--but by the third act it was dragging. 2 hours 20 minutes was at least 10 too long IMO.

The premise was great. But in the end it felt like a so-so mashup of a Coen Bros via Tarrantino film. Solid B, but it had the makings of an A with some sharper editing & better developed characters.
