I have the house to myself this weekend so I'm looking for a game to dive into for a few days. The only games I have are Mario Odyssey, Zelda BOTW, Mario Kart, Mario Bros U, Rocket League and FIFA 18 I think.

I'm thinking about Links Awakening but I know there are some interesting 3rd party games out there too but I don't keep up with the trends much.  What is a fun and immersive game for a weekend with no kids?

My wife somehow managed to get me a full switch for my birthday in June...damn things became unobtanium when covid hit.  Gave me Animal Crossing with it as I’d been trying to track down the original GC version (have an original Wii still), figuring it’d be good for my 6yo to play and practice reading.

He loves it so much that I’ve had to give up on having my island the precise way I want it...lil dude loves the axe so much he chopped down a bunch of my trees, decorated our house like a 70s-era high school locker room and builds random stuff.  Still worth it, I haven’t really gotten into Minecraft like him so gives us something to do together and talk about.

Perfect game for lockdown.  Always something to do, things change based on the time, and plays so much like the original that I know some tips.

Friend gifted me Odyssey.  Gotta get that going next.

Been reading about the joycon issues...ugh as Nintendo always has the best controllers, they can take my GC Wavebirds from my cold, dead fingers.

Joycon drift is easily dealt with. Get yourself a can of WD-40 Specialist Electrical Contact Cleaner spray. There is a little rubber flap under each analog stick you can lift up with a safety pin and squirt a little cleaner in there. It will fix the drift for 3-4 weeks.

I recently downloaded Lonely Mountains Downhill. A 20 dollar mountain biking game that is pretty fun. Start out with 1 trail on 1 mountain with 1 bike and eventually unlock lots more by completing challenges. 4 mountains with 4 trails each I think in total. Simple control scheme, easy to jump right in, but the challenges do ramp up to be very difficult.

Ah yes, the old drift thing. Unless I’m thinking of something else, it’s an easy fix.

Keep your fingers off the sticks and buttons as it loads up. If you find your cursor drifting without touching the stick, shutdown and turn back on while leaving the controller(s) sitting down out of your hands.

I rarely use the actual joycons, but same deal with a pro or other controller.

Question on accounts.  I currently have a single user Nintendo account, one switch and my two kids have their own offline accounts on that switch that they use to play ACNH.  We are considering getting my kids a switch lite for xmas.

My son loves Minecraft.  I’d like to get dungeons for him for his October birthday to play on my switch, then transfer it over to the lite at Christmas time.

1) Should i upgrade to a family plan soon?

2) I expect we should buy the Minecraft physical version so I can uninstall it from my switch and reinstall it on the lite when Santa comes.  Correct?

Just want to make sure I’m not in a weird, Nintendo-created problem where their account system is flakey.

yes to both to be on the safe side. If you get the downloaded version, it would depend on which account purchases it I think. Of course you could always add your account to the switch lite and carry the game over. Also don't forget an SD card for their switch. set up an alert on slick deals for sdcard or something. or just get a 128gb one for around $20 or 64gb for around $12

So, I have a fuct up controller with a fuct up stick.  Not "drift," but it resists movement to the left.  I blew it out and that helped some, but it's back to doing it.

I bought it at Target.  Any ideas for the swiftest warranty repair or replacement?

I have initiated an online claim.  Looks like I'm gonna have to ship it if I go that way.

Just look for a local video game repair shop. For some controllers, it is really easy to change the joysticks out. (Even I did that a few times with my Wii U.)  Some require soldering. And knowing where to get the right replacement parts can be a crap shoot, especially since they pretty much all come from China.

Welp, I just wound up buying another set of joycons because they were immediately available at a gamestop.

I rely on this thing to occupy an hour or two just about every day during the pandemic (bought it in March for that specific reason).  But it is disappointing that something as fundamental as the controller gives out in six months, even with heavy use.

Emailed Nintendo through their website Sunday.  Got an RMA label Monday morning and shipped off the wonky joycon.  The site acts like they are massively slowed by the virus.  I'll report back on when I get the fixed joycon back.

they had a huge backlog from march.  we tried setting up a warranty exchange (drift issues...) for 4 joycons the third week of march and we only got it done the first week of august.  and we actually had to first purchase another 4 from nintendo and have them credit us back after they received the damaged controllers.  worked "faster" that way.

Mario 64 giving me the warm fuzzies. Such a great game, in spite of the shitty camera.

Yes, but GOD DAMN that camera is janky garbage.

I have already pumped like 30 hours (at least) into Galaxy since Friday.

I downloaded Hades because I saw some talk about it online. Not my typical type of game but very addicting. You’re basically trying to escape from hell and fighting various mythical creatures on the way out. If you die, you go back down to the lowest level of hell and start over. There are improvements you earn that help you make it further the more you play.

So to revisit an earlier question about getting my 7yo a Lite for Xmas...they seem plentifully in stock right now at retail prices.  Hell even the AC edition of the full switch is out now.

Should I just buy it now while they are plentiful?  My only reason to wait is I’d be giving up 3 months of the warranty and getting they’ll become a bit scarce again leading up to the holiday.

My gut says to wait a bit but figured I’d ask the hive mind.

Sure why not. They're not going to change or anything between now and then. If there actually was going to be a switch pro by the holidays it would have been announced by now.

I'm still not convinced a switch pro will happen.

Oh I get that.  But I’m wondering about losing three months of warranty because I’m concerned  they will be in high demand and can’t get them in November.

Can you multiplayer on switch lite?  I know nothing about the switch other than the general concept, but trying to decide on if having our 3 kids share a standard switch or each have their own lite version.  I am thinking since they'd each have different interests that they'd be playing solo most the time and fighting over the 1 console.  But then another part of me is like that's how me and my brothers grew up why should my kids get anything better.

You can create multiple profiles on a switch to have their own settings or house in a game like animal crossing, and multiple switches can play local WiFi multiplayer.  My kids are 4/7 and fight over gets to play Animal Crossing all the time...and it’s technically my birthday gift.

The big advantage of the full switch is you can dock it and play on a tv, multiple sets of controllers would be expensive...you can also detach the controllers and prop it up on a desk, which is what I do on conference calls.  Is that worth an extra $100 to you?  It was to me as my kids and I take turns playing on the tv and the graphics obviously look better.

But for your situation paying $600 for three lites is probably better than $400 for one full switch to fight over.  What kind of games do they like?

My oldest son (9) like a wide variety of games mainly plays Minecraft on the PS4, but he's the main driver in wanting the switch because his cousins brought one on their last visit.  The youngest 5 likes playing but can't keep up with the oldest, and my daughter also 9 isn't super into video games but she'd want one if the others got one.  This would be a 100% them console as I just stick to the PS4 if I want to play.  If I had any intention of playing anything on this, I would for sure get the main one so I can use the TV.  But seeing as there probably isn't a lot that they'd all play together I am leaning towards the lites.

With 3 lites, if they did want to play Mario Kart or something against each other would I need to buy 3 copies of the game?

On a normal switch you can have up to 8 controllers connected, many games will have same system, same screen multiplayer that way.

But if they are all on switch lights and all needing independent screens, most games will require multiple purchases.

There is a way to set up accounts so a single purchase can run on more than one system, but it won't allow it to run if it is already running on another system linked to the account.

I've had to buy stardew valley on two switches and I've bought two animal crossing cartridges so my daughters can play together using two switches.

The other games they play together share screen with one system.
