Can you multiplayer on switch lite?  I know nothing about the switch other than the general concept, but trying to decide on if having our 3 kids share a standard switch or each have their own lite version.  I am thinking since they'd each have different interests that they'd be playing solo most the time and fighting over the 1 console.  But then another part of me is like that's how me and my brothers grew up why should my kids get anything better.

Since you know nothing about the Switch, let me elaborate something.

The regular Switch comes with a "cradle/charger" that plugs into your TV.  You put the Switch in the cradle when it's "on" and the Switch then becomes a "console game."  You can detach the L and R controllers and use them as a controller (either one in each hand or mounted in a little jig that makes it like a regular game controller), or pair separate BT controllers, up to 8 controllers.  If you put the switch in the cradle when it's "off," then it's just a charger.

So, it's a bit more than a handheld game that you can port the display to your TV.

The Lite is just a handheld game: an extra large Gameboy or DS.  You may be able to use an HDMI to put its display on the TV, but it doesn't have the "console" functionality of the Switch.

You actually cannot get HDMI out of a Switch Lite - it doesn't have the hardware onboard.

So the Lite is a fully functional switch software-wise, but it has only a subset of physical functionality (some games expect removable joy-cons for example)

Yeah I wasn't sure about that.  But I knew it lacked the functionality of a "console."  Wasn't sure I wanted console functionality, but ultimately decided the $100 was worth it.

And if the Lite's sticks crap out too, I'm really glad I got the Switch so I'm waiting on just joycons and not the whole thing.

The joycon drift issue on the lite is a huge issue, because you can't just buy new ones or send them in for repair but keep the whole system with backup joycons.

The Switch is what is says it is - you can switch between handheld or console.  The Switch Lite is a stupid name because there's no switching involved - it is just a giant ass Gameboy.   I do understand it's very appealing to some people, but the multifunctionality of the Switch + the ability to connect different joycons if the others crap out makes it worth the extra money.

In fact, I'd argue Mario Party, Mario Kart and Smash make it worth the extra $100 or whatever.  For you/your kids, just your kids or your kids and their friends.

Also, knowing the Switch is safe in its cradle when not being played = less likely to be misplaced or broken by kids.

Yeah I've swung back to sharing the console version after being educated by you guys.  I was thinking the switch was more like a Gameboy you could hook up to your TV vs a console that's portable.  After reading here, and other stuff online, there seems to be a world of difference between a product purpose built to only be portable vs. one where portability is just a feature.

Joycon drift can also be pretty easily fixed with WD-40 Specialist Electrical Contact cleaner. About 8 bucks on Amazon.

When joycon drift starts to show up, there is a little rubber flap under the stick you can lift up with a safety pin, and a little squirt of that electrical contact cleaner can get down in there, then move the stick all around for a few seconds.

That fixes the drift for a while. I do that about every 6-8 weeks.

I didn't use contact cleaner, and I didn't have drift, per se.  Mine just didn't want to go left.  When I would attempt to calibrate it, the little dot would "stick" about 3/4 way over.  You could "bounce it" all the way left.

I blew it out with air a couple of times, and that helped, but it was back in a week.  Finally, it just quit working.

I shipped it off more than two weeks ago (9/14).  It just registered as received on Saturday (10/3).  Says repair could take 10-20 days.

So the whole warranty repair thing is not exactly swift.

I take a q tip soaked in rubbing alcohol and run it around there and it works for a weeks.

That sounds like a whole other problem, not joycon drift.

They definitely have a design flaw, but the typical drift most people are seeing can be dealt with. It's just annoying.

Yeah, not drift, but related.  Some kind of stick contact issue.  I may have made it worse by blowing into it.

On the brighter side, it's coming back tomorrow, according to UPS.

Now the question becomes what do I do with the second set of joycons.

Also kind of annoying, but the finish on the back is "worn slick" in spots.  The joycons showed no wear.  I have a 15-year-old gameboy that shows no wear.

Are these still really hard to come by?  I converted to Xbox back in 2012 but grew up a Nintendo fanboy.  I want a Switch this fall to play BotW as well as Odyssey and some other games.  My birthday is at the end of the month so I know my wife is looking for one.  I still get the Twitter account notifications that tell you when one becomes available, but are they really still hard to get?

Also, I want the regular and not the Lite, right?  Don't really care about it being portable and I want to use it as a console on the big screen.

They haven't been difficult to find recently, but I would think around Black Friday to Christmas they will sell out again at a few retailers. Looks like Best Buy, Target and Walmart all have them instock online currently.

Amazon has them but only through resellers who are charging $399 instead of 299

Probably one of my favorite games, and Galaxy II was even better.

I was pretty mad galaxy 2 wasn't included, I agree with your opinion on galaxy 1, but never played galaxy 2.

Same. They'll eventually release Galaxy 2 for another 50 bucks.

I'm hoping to pick one of these up for the family.  What's a good game for a 6 and. 8 year old?  Also what extra accessories are recommend?

Mario, zelda, splatoon.

You will need a wireless controller. That's pretty much the only accessory.

Which Mario?  Target has a deal tomorrow for a switch and Mario kart for $299, if I can snag that, that's one game .  Im interested in Mario maker, is that worth it?

What controller you recommend?

Get a joy con grip/holder and/or pro controller style

If you are going to play hand held, invest in a screen cover and case.

Get a Micro SD card, 256 GB or as big as your wallet will let you obtain. More games are be promoted for digital distribution so that means you need storage space

I would definitely get the Nintendo Pro Controller, I think it's $60 on Amazon and stores will price match

The Amfilm screen protector from Amazon is only about 8 dollars and is really good.

sorry, was talking about the pro controller. For which Mario game, the answer is pretty much "yes". But if you want to limit it to just 2 or 3, then get Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, and Mario 3d All Star.

My son had a lot of fun with Mario Maker, making levels and downloading other's levels and trying to play them. There's a lot of youtube videos out there too. If he likes Minecraft, he'd probably enjoy Mario Maker.

Pay the $20 a year subscription for their online service for some NES and SNES games.

Speaking of which, a year long family subscription is on sale for $20 at target in case you have more than one user.

We have a switch Lite (got it first back in April) and a regular Switch that we got in October.  I have 14, 11, and 7 year olds.  They only have a few games like Animal Crossing, Zelda, and Goat.

I want to get them Mario Cart Game and maybe Mario Odyssey for Christmas.  My 7 year old loves making games out of paper and I thought he might like Mario Maker.  Is he too young for that?

What is the best way to get used games?

I prefer the chip games to digital download since we have two systems.  Is there a way to get the downloads on both systems under the same account?

btw, if anyone is lost on what games to get, kotaku keeps this list of best games on the switch updates with explanations of the gameplay and who it appeals to. Also check out the notes at the bottom to see games that were previously on the list but bumped off when new games came out to get some more ideas.

BOTW is the one game I play now.  Usually after kids are in bed.  I am not on master mode but at times I get good and can kill a divine beast or white/zebra Lynel easily and then I take a week off and can't dodge for shit.  I have gotten the parry down for the Guardians at different distances now so I don't lose all my shields.

I have all 4 beasts and all the memories, I've gone through half of the castle so far.

I've been a Playstation player since PS2.  But now I have 5 and 7 year old boys and decided to get this for them for Christmas. (I'm going to have to wait on my PS5 now)

I want to get two more controllers so mom and dad can play every once in a while.  Should I just get 2 more Joy-Con's or is it worth the investment to get 2 Pro-Controllers for the boys? I was wondering if they might be too big for young kids hands.  They have used my PS3 controllers to play Harry Potter. They struggle a little but manage.

Only thing to watch with “pro” controllers is to make sure they have the internal gyros. Nothing sucks worse than occasionally needing them in a game and having to switch up controllers or grab the switch out of the dock.

Also there are a few games (odyssey comes to mind) that have special functions per joycon. Slightly annoying of you are more comfortable with a pro controller.

I like this one a lot. Only thing I don’t like is that it doesn’t wake up the switch on its own. Has great feel though.
