Can RUSH continue on without Neil Peart? Maybe.

In honor of Geddy Lee's 66th birthday today, a song that Geddy wrote. It's hard to believe that this was composed just 22 years after Bill Haley "invented"  Rock and Roll with "Rock around the Clock." Rock sure did make some amazing strides in such a short time.   As the first comment says, "An 11 minute prog rock song including xylophones, gongs, chimes, double-necked guitars, and synthesizers; based on an 18th century poem; played by three grown Canadian men in silk kimonos who have more excessive hair than a 70's porno... What more could you ask for??"

From Geddy's Wiki:

Lee was born on July 29, 1953 in Willowdale, (North York) Toronto, Ontario, to Morris and Mary Weinrib (née Manya Rubenstein).[12][13] His parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors[14] from Poland who had survived the ghetto in their hometown Starachowice, followed by their imprisonments at Auschwitz and later Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps, during the Holocaust[15][16]and World War II. They were about 13 years old when they were initially imprisoned at Auschwitz.[17] "It was kind of surreal pre-teen shit," says Lee, describing how his father bribed guards to bring his mother shoes. After a period, his mother was transferred to Bergen-Belsen and his father to Dachau. When the war ended four years later and the Allies liberated the camps, Morris set out in search of Mary and found her at a displaced persons camp. They married there and eventually emigrated to Canada

Since I couldn't find a de facto Rush thread, I figured I would post here.  I watched the big interview with Geddy Lee last night and it was awesome.  I'd never seen him interviewed before I really enjoyed listening to him tell the stories of how Rush came about.  I also watched the "Farewell to Kings" special afterwards and was just amazed at the history of the band and the reverence that a lot of people in the music industry held for them.  I'm a "fan" of Rush, but mostly of their biggest hits (Red Barchetta, Fly By Night, Tom Sawyer,  Spirit of the Radio, etc).  Growing up in SA, it was impossible to escape Rush, so you kind of became a fan be default.  At any rate, I came away extremely impressed with how thoughtful all three members of the band were.  I really didn't know how many of the songs' lyrics were written by Neil.  I always just figured he was just a God that had take human form to play the drums for a while.

As for the spirit of this thread, there is no way that Rush could tour without Neil imo.

Replace SA w/ Dallas and this is me.  My first rock concert ever was the Rush Moving Pictures tour in late 1980/early 1981.  They blew me away and, for a long time, Tom Sawyer and Limelight were my favorite songs.  Also smoked my first doobie at that show.

I watched the Rush documentary, Beyond the Lighted Stage a few weeks ago and was blown away by Peart's genius.  On top of that, he went through an amazingly tough time in the late 90s w/ the death of his wife and daughter within a year of each other.  Brutal.  He went on a year-long (maybe longer) motorcycle ride around north and central America to get his head right w/ ball.

Man, I haven't seen them live in forever....guess I won't ever again.

His book about the motorcycle trip is pretty cool.

The only time I saw Rush was on the "Moving Pictures" tour as well.  That album was their zenith as far as melding hooks with their prog rock instincts.

I distinctly recall being in the bathroom after the opening act (probably Max Webster?), standing at the urinal, and suddenly the opening synth washes of "2112" hit the arena.  "Shit!  I'm missing it!" Finished my business and ran back to my seats before the first downbeat . . .

It is.  His other book about being out on the road on tour was good too.  He was bicycling between cities to get to each show instead of the motorcycle.  His story about walking into the four seasons in Atlanta after a 200 mile ride all muddy is good.  Walks in after riding all day, wet, muddy tired and looking like shit.  Concierge comes up to him asking wtf he is doing there.  His response was I'm paying for a whole floor of rooms in the hotel tonight I don't give a fuck what you think right now.

Saw that last night at the theatre.  I could have watched Geddy Lee talk about his book and noodle on basses all day.  The actual movie was just R40 repackaged. I was expecting more of a documentary style, but it is Rush so no complaints.

I never noticed before but had no idea how amazing his bass collection is and that he plays them in the shows as well.
