Here is a tip guide with many articles on your router:

ReadySHARE Access You can connect a USB storage device or printer to the USB port on the router and share it on the network.  To access the USB drive from a Windows computer: 1. Insert your USB storage drive into the USB port on the router. 2. If your USB drive has a power supply, you must use it when you connect the USB drive to the router. When you connect the USB drive to the router USB port, it might take up to two minutes before it is ready for sharing. By default, the USB drive is available to all computers on your local area network (LAN). 3. Select Start > Run. 4. Enter \\readyshare in the dialog box. 5. Click the OK button.  To access the USB drive from a Mac: 1. Insert your USB storage drive into the USB port on the router. 2. Not sure what the readyshare does above.

It could also be that, just a guess, you need to be sure your router 'network' is the same as your usb hdd  network if it is an ip enabled device.  The NAT(network address translation) local address network is usually something like:  192.168.0.xxx  with xxx being 2 through 254 assuming a class c network mask of 255.255.255.0 .  sometimes setting a hard ip works best.  so you pick a number in that range above for your device ip, be sure the mask is set right, and then be sure the gateway ip is set to the router gateway.

What kind of usb drive is it?  Check the manual for it as well by searching googles for the model number and attaching to router.

I'll be out of town for the next week so very little internet access.
