Neuro Recomendations? May have had a TIA

I don’t know what a TIA is but I needed a Nuerosurgeon for my spine a while back. In Austin, Dr Kristopher Webb with NeuroTexas was highly recommended. He did good work for me and was pleasant and knowledgeable. The person who recommended him to me uses him as a nuero expert in legal cases and he’s got a good reputation there.

It’s often a minor or precursor to a stroke.

I feel like a dumbass but I just tried powering through a difficulty of speech, loss of sensation in part of my body (one side of face and hand) and blurred vision followed by killer headachesI thought maybe I was just having a weird migraine. Passed in an hour and a half.

A vendor I’ve worked with a lot was meeting with me about a client of theirs and noticed I could get the words I wanted to say out so I was using weird substitutes or replacements that didn’t make complete sense and mentioned it to me so I knew I wasn’t just experiencing it internally. A former nurse told me when I mentioned it to him that it sounded like a textbook TIA and that I needed to see a specialist pretty much ASAP because I dodged a bullet but increasing would be at risk for massive stroke without getting care and figuring out the source (clot or maybe a weird shaped artery in need of correction)

Go to the ER now.

This is the appropriate answer. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Unless you're okay with dying, then proceed to carry on. I'm serious. ER today. Now.

Edit. And for clarification, I'm not talking about a pop-up ER. Go to a hospital that has cardiology/ neurovascular services.

GO TO THE ER .... NOW, RIGHT NOW

Mrs Fairway had a TIA/mini-stroke 2 years ago. It was at once both the scariest and most amazing thing to see at the ER. When you check in if you say the magic word (the magic word is stroke) then you get an unbelievable amount of attention and you get it immediately. Within 5 minutes she was getting a CAT scan, then X-Rays, a bunch of tests, the on-duty neurologist introduced herself and then spent about 30 minutes doing cognitive tests.
I've been to the ER a number of times both with Mrs. Fairway & my kids, usually you sit around for hours waiting your turn, and then a Nurse takes vitals and you sit waiting to see a Dr.

Long story short, she is fine - but it was definitely a stroke, slurred speech, droopy face, struggling to find the right words. They changed some of her scripts, and added a baby aspirin.

Neuro appointment impending... they'll do a full workup and get me meds if necessary.

The prelim diagnosis is something called complex migraine or migraine with aura, which closely mimics a stroke (both the physical and cognitive stuff) but progress gradually and disappates into a cluster headache rather than a sudden onset

Thanks for the input everyone

You OK?

Fine enough and back to normal but spooked, kinda came out of no where. I'm an otherwise in good health 30 year old. Pretty good diet, active job and probably in about as good of shape as I'm going to be the rest of my life. Broken brain don't give a shit apparently lol

That night when I got home, and put my 2 kids under 4 to bed, the wife and I started discussing getting a will together amongst other things. We're not pessimists, but if the tests come back TIA (which increased my risk of major stroke by 10%) instead the migraine with aura we'll need to have affairs squared away better than we had before just in case. May take an increase on that life insurance policy as well.

Had a similar situation with a migraine aura hit me out of no where at the gym a few yrs ago. Scared the shit out of me and got scans done, diagnosis was a chiari malformation (brain 'tonsils' can clog up the hole at the base of the skull and back fluid up effectively) . Hasn't happened since thankfully, but scared the hell out of me good.

Likely a pretty good damn outcome given the circumstance.  I didn't realize you're only 30.  TIA is quite unlikely but not impossible.  If labs come back with that result, I'd consider a pretty hefty change in lifestyle.  AFA the migraines are concerned, I've dealt w/ them since 3rd grade (also in my 30s) and they certainly suck.  Good luck.

Same exact thing happened to me in 2012. Was 42 at the time. Ended up NOT being a TIA. Was an AVM. Actually ended up being 3 separate AVMs. 3 brain surgeries later I am perfectly fine. Have them check for this. I’m in Houston and went to the UT Mischer Institute in the Medical Center. Best neurosurgeon in the state. Dr P Roc Chen. Saved my life. PM me if you want to talk and get more details. Get this shit taken care of.
