And, yet, he was still sadly a better result than Mme Le Pen. Which of these "fuck-ups" would you have chosen?

Prior to the last round of voting, citoyens could choose between:

  1. Le Pen (fascist - not an exaggeration)
  2. Macron (corporatist moderate)
  3. Mélenchon (socialist)
  4. Fillon (disgraced & scandalized right-of-center)

Of course, the two to make it to the last round were Macron and Le Pen.

Now, you're fucking gloating? Or would you have honestly preferred a white nationalist, fascist to govern over the RF?

Stick to the weather, Frankie.

Why can't people just comment on current events without your laborious insults? Why can't you post your own thought on current events without constantly insulting people? Is it just too hard to just be normal and treat people with respect?

Um, no you pompous asshole. Everyone has the right to state he should resign. What "wounds the credibility" is protecting a pope who is guilty of sheltering abusers and preventing their punishment. You fucking mouth breathing arrogant selfish moron.

I know I said you guys were delusional, you need not take it so literally. You're literally making my head explode.

You should be ashamed of yourself. Like Hugo, you lie deliberately and with perfect fluency.

Ah, OK, you should go read some stuff. Sorry, you're just the guy who didn't know. No harm being ignorant, the only sin is not acknowledging it.

Unfortunately, most people here (see: posters who replied to you) are the answer to the question "are you smarter than a third grader".

Hugo I'm not trying to insult you but do you know you are making a fool of yourself? If you have a cause you're the opposition's best recruiting tool. I don't know what they pay you but they're not getting their money's worth.

Both you clowns should be banned. The admins don't need to be fielding calls from the Secret Service.

Maybe fuck yourself

If you're gonna ride the high horse, you should have at least passable grammar.

But seriously, to be progressive is to believe in moral relativism, or, on a personal level, it is to have no morality at all. So for those of us who still have morals, this is of course no surprise at all

The smart people know this is a giant nothingburger and are laughing at the rubes who can't figure it out

The answer is obvious to anyonee with a brain. Which sadly excludes most people posting here.

I think today's Dem Party is like an Islamic Sharia party. The more traditional view is that "democratic SOCIALIST" is quite similar to "national SOCIALIST". All three ideologies are totalitarian and therefore despicable and borderline genocidal.

The more the Democratic Party tightens its grip, the more starsystems will slip through its fingers. Carry on with your poisonous insanity.

I hate picking on the stupid kids, but sometimes I feel compelled.

You know I read his post and he denies that. If it comes down to him or you, I'm sorry but you're the crazy one. Post the link.

Do you act like this in person? You must be insufferable

Liberals are out of their minds.

If you think this you are literally out of your mind. You stand for hate, not love. You are wrong and you should feel bad.

This is probably too much for the pea brains in this thread, but you do realize this adds to her credibility, right?

Such a shining example of “being normal and treating people with respect”.

To get the thread back on topic, the Gilets Jaunes have the support of over 70% of the population, allegedly. So they are being supported by basically everyone, from both sides.  (Both sides agree the gov should give everyone plenty of free shit.)

I've stated something in other threads that needs to be repeated here. The "European Project" is a suicide pact. The are demographically doomed, they have abandoned Western heritage, and they are deindustrializing/losing GDP. The groups leading this suicide pact are called, in every country, "the elites". Or globalists. Whatever.

But the regular people in these countries never wanted to go along with this. They didn't sign on to impoverishment. They didn't sign on to be governed by unelected bureaucracies in Brussels. And so they are going to fight back. But they don't have an intellectual tradition of small government. When Greece melted down, their "right wing" party was a legit neonazi party. So calling them "right" is incorrect, they are not small government, they are Nazis/leftists.

Europe's financial crisis is only beginning.

_84236078_greek_debt_gdp_624_v5.png

See the chart I posted above showing how the government spending in France as a % of GDP is rapidly increasing. It's because their private sector is falling. The outcome is certain even if the date is not.

france-gdp.png?s=wgdpfran&v=201701111600

This is a mob and as the economy shrinks and ever more freedom is taken from the people, they will fight back the only way they now how. And it ends very badly.

Excellent opinion piece in the NY Post (which my man Sohrab Ahmari now manages the Opinion section) by a French person on the yellow vest protests and the rejection of out of touch progressive globalist values espoused by Macron. This was money:

“More recently, Macron pledged to sign an open-borders UN pact on world migration, which the US, Australia, Israel and a handful of European nations reject. He said France’s cherished secularist 1905 laws should be revised, largely to help the country’s newest religion, Islam, integrate within French society. Worst of all: Members of his party have indicated that Macron is willing to give up France’s UN Security Council seat to the European Union.”

France is a fascinating country. From a political perspective, I have always admired their cantankerous ways and their commitment to a strict separation of church and state with their concept of laïcité. I think the point is that there is a global elite that has values that are odds and conflict with the “deplorables” of their countries. The Macrons, Merkels, Clintons, Obamas and Silicon Valley billionaires  of the world have more in common with each other as a class of people with globalist worldview that has left them unable to deal with a lot or relate to a lot of their own compatriots.

You're starting to catch on a little bit except for the fact that the media isn't calling them "right wing" or at least in none of the media I consume. Nor are the gilets jaunes being labeled "fascists" in my world. Those labels are only being bandied about on this board.

But, yes, the core group is generally under-educated and tends to be comprised of rural denizens of communities that have been bypassed by the modern economy, but there are also other peripheral hangers-on. This is a group that has been failed by both the "right" and the "left".

Where and how we go forward (not just in France, but the West as a whole) is a very complicated issue where I haven't seen many great ideas proffered. Just to let you know, my current avocation is primarily based on assisting rural communities attempt to make some fundamental changes to their local economies and help them make this transition. And, believe me, it's not easy. But, I do think that it's definitely worth the effort for the good of us all.

That sounds vaguely familiar.

Yeah, how many "deplorables" do you think Trump and his Mir a Lago buddies hang out with on the weekends. He claims to be a billionaire, the only people he gives a fuck about are those that he thinks can make him more money.

Of course lots Republicans have/had a similar worldview. That’s why so many people voted for Trump because he was the only candidate who even mentioned the concerns of those left behind by globalization which Republicans were a chief architect of.

So, how wrong is this summary:

Macron wants to instill more fiscal responsibility and the rabble wants to keep their free stuff.

This is halfway accurate. According to one of my vehement and vocal socialist friends over there, they're also pissed that he's lowered the taxes on the top 1% while increasing some (including the now suspended rise in gas taxes) on the middle and working classes.

She's also very unhappy with the way the CRS (France's elite repulican - meaning national - law enforcement agency) has behaved at the behest of the interior minister. And, to be fair, the CRS are not the friendly-looking cops with silly hats most Americans visualize when they think of French gendarmes.

l-adjudant-eric-balestra-commandant-de-brigade-et-l-eleve-gendarme-julie-jezernik-photo-patrick-dubois-1462194157.jpg

Instead, they're the scary looking ones you see at their airports and who have an entirely separate history that has often involved political violence.

000_Par8089957_0.jpg

But to balance out the issue even further, some of the protesters (les casseurs) have gone far out of their way to cause violence and property damage themselves (and not just in response to police actions).

extreme-gauche-2.jpg

And, to be clear, "les casseurs" are a group that hasn't been embraced by the typical "gilets jaunes." They are indeed "agents provocateurs" looking to cause mayhem.

These are your rural yellow vests:

Good point that france has more political parties than the US.  Say if we had another party,  trump (or any president) could find their popularity in the 20s or 30s and still potentially win.

Totally this.

Quote

French president Emmanuel Macron tonight announced a range of dramatic Socialist-style financial concessions to struggling workers so as to end an 'economic and social state of emergency'.

In a TV address lasting 12 minutes, he said a month of rioting and blockades justified a €100 (£90) increase in the minimum wage, taking it to €1498 (£1360).

This will not 'cost anything to the employer', said Mr Macron, and will be accompanied by all taxes and other charges on overtimes being scrapped.

There were also be an end-of-year bonus that employers can pay without being charged by the government, while taxes on those earning less than €2000 (£1800) will also end on January 1.

Mr Macron also ruled out any return of the Solidarity Wealth Tax, saying that he wanted to stop rich entrepreneurs 'moving abroad', so preventing 'job creation'.

The extraordinarily generous package of measures represents a massive U-turn by Mr Macron who originally said he would not yield to rioting as he tried to liberalise the sluggish France economy.

So-called Yellow Vest fuel protestors first took to the streets on November 17, and this led to the president scrapping green charges on petrol and diesel.

'I heard the anger was first of all against the tax, but it's deeper than that, and this anger could be our chance,' said Mr Macron.

'I heard the despair of the forgotten people. There are couples who struggle to make ends meet, brave single mothers or widows who can't afford child care, and poor pensioners who often have to help children and grandchildren, as well as people with disabilities.'

Mr Macron said this 'Forgotten France' has existed for at least 40 years, and that everything had to be done to held them.

Referring to rioting which has seen 4523 arrests across France since November 17, Mr Macron said: 'I will not compromise on violence. When violence unfolds, freedom ends.'

Mr Macron, who served in Francois Hollande's Socialist government before becoming President himself in 2017, particularly accused 'opportunists' including looters of 'taking advantage of sincere anger.'

macron fucked up letting it get to this point, but caving in to the violence inherent in the system is not a good look either.

Correct.

He wasn't honest was his first problem. Everyone saw through it and got pissed. A lot more pissed than he had anticipated. Not to mention when you have 70% of the country supporting the yellow vests you are in deep shit.

I had a really long talk with a friend of mine from France who's family still lives over there. He sees both sides but laughs when talking about the differences between France and the US.

Everybody wants what the don't have. He said health care being free is great but people in the US would shit if they had to wait 6 months to see a doctor or pay extra if you want a TV in your hospital room.

On the flip side he said in the US if you are between jobs most people find employment in a couple of weeks because they need the pay and the benefits over there they will go months because they don't need to find a job right away with all of the benefits given to them.

He said it's just far too complex an issue and like everything else isn't easily explained by a couple of sentences.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/12/11/latest-several-injured-shots-fired-strasbourg-christmas-market/

A“lone gunman” remains at large after killing at least four people and seriously injuring several others in the eastern French city of Strasbourg near its famed Christmas market visited by millions.

The authorities are treating the attack as a terrorist act. Anti-terrorist prosecutors have opened an investigation.

A manhunt involving police and soldiers is underway with French media saying the gunman was on the loose but had already been “identified” as being on a list of “security threats”.

The gunman was wounded by soldiers on patrol as part of France's Sentinelle anti-terror operation but managed to flee, said police.

According to police, he was later located to rue Epinal and shots were being exchanged.

The European Parliament based in the city was in lockdown after reports of the shooting, with British and other MEPs, staff and journalists unable to leave the building which is a few kilometres from the square.

The violence around the protests has led to enormous losses for commerce and tourism in the prime pre-Christmas season, and the government’s concessions, including the cancellation of a fuel price increase, will cost the government billions.

But it would be a far greater catastrophe for France if Mr. Macron were unable to stay the course on his structural reforms

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/voters-rejecting-carbon-fee-in-first-day-returns/

From November:

Washington state voters on Tuesday rejected Initiative 1631, a proposed carbon fee on fossil-fuel emissions that spurred the biggest ballot-measure spending spree in state history.

As of Tuesday evening, with more than 1.9 million votes tallied from all 39 counties, 56.3 percent of the voters opposed the initiative, while 43.7 percent supported the measure. There are many more votes to be counted but the lead was unlikely to be overtaken.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/01/france-yellow-vest-protesters-storm-ministry-paris-190106110957370.html

"Yellow vest" protesters clashed with police in several French cities, smashing their way into a government ministry in Paris with a forklift.

Benjamin Griveaux - a government spokesman evacuated from his ministry in central Paris on Saturday when a handful of protesters in high-visibility vests smashed down the large wooden door to the ministry compound - denounced the break-in as an "unacceptable attack on the Republic".

"Some yellow vest protesters and other people dressed in black ... got hold of a construction vehicle which was in the street nearby and smashed open the entrance gate to the ministry," he told the AFP news agency.

They briefly entered the courtyard where they smashed up two cars, broke some windows and then escaped, Griveaux added, saying police were trying to identify them from security footage.

The Interior Ministry put the number of protesters who took to the streets across France at 50,000, compared with 32,000 on December 29 when the movement appeared to be weakening after holding a series of weekly Saturday protests since mid-November.

Macron went back and attacked the protesters again. The ones who have 80% support of the population. He's such a snob he hates his own voters. It's a very difficult situation when a leader and a population obviously hate each other but the leader won't just leave honorably.

https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/01/01/unapologetic-after-bruising-year-macron-slams-yellow-vests-as-a-hateful-crowd/

Quote

Instead of speaking of a united France as he did last year, Macron attacked his detractors, who have taken to the streets in weekly protests over two months to demand his resignation. While the protests have at times turned violent, the rebels have enjoyed the broad support of the French public — unlike their increasingly unpopular President.

Attacking the character of Yellow Vest protestors — who he did not call by name — and calling them un-French liars, Macron said in the televised address from his Paris palace that they are: “the megaphones of a hate-filled crowd attacking elected representatives, the forces of law and order, journalists, Jews, foreigners, homosexuals.

“That is simply the negation of France. I have recently seen things that are unthinkable and heard the unacceptable… Republican order will be ensured with no leniency.”
