Thanks for the rec for “Over My Dead Body “!

It’s really great plus it takes place in my hometown and loads of my friends lived in the neighborhood the murder happened in so I’m getting a huge kick out of knowing all the places they’re talking about.

Wondery - the production company behind it and “Dirty John” and “Imagined Life (which I recommend in this thread) - does awesome work.

I just started another one from them, “The Wonderland Murders”. It’s based on the murder case porn star John Holmes was involved in. I’m only halfway through episode one but so far so good.

I didn’t know the lead detective in the Wonderland case was Tom Lange. The detective of OJ Simpson case fame who stupidly took blood and evidence home from the crime scene home in his car and left in his trunk overnight before logging into evidence at the station.

That guy investigated some pretty high profile, brutal cases.

Only Alex Jones could make Eddie Bravo sound like the rational, reasonable one.  Love that Rogan had them both on there.  He knew exactly what was coming.

Just like with episode 911 I thought Bravo dragged this one down

Good discussion on the most recent rogan with Twitter execs and a twitter critic.  The critic had some decent ideas about problems with twitter but a fair amount of his research appears to be obscure stories that others have told him.  And when twitter addresses specific high profile stories like Alex Jones or the milo guy being banned, he refuses to acknowledge their reasonjng as being legit.

i won’t CR this reply but leave it with that the podcast is a decent, civil debate.

Up and Vanished season 1 is terrible. It felt like the host wanted to create a Serial type story so he googled a bunch of unsolved missing person cases, then randomly picked an interesting one and started interviewing people in the town to manufacture drama where it didn’t actually exist. Many of his interviews were pointless dead ends, then as luck would have it the actual law enforcement broke open the case around the same time, then the host started patting himself on the back and even interviewed his own mother as evidence of how awesome he is. I didn’t realize there’s a season 2, can’t imagine what it could be about, and won’t be listening.

Necro reply. I'm repeating myself from the Shaggy thread, but yeah.  Agree 100%. I will add that I found his "look at me" content particularly odorous and insufferable.  The entire episode (or was it more?) dedicated to his Facebook stalker (lol), and the monologue he did at least once - maybe multiple times - where he'd call out all the "haters" around town and grandstand about "the truth."  Shit was embarrassing.

I'm digging "Over my Dead Body" too.  I saw a Dateline (or Dateline-y) episode about this case within the last few years or so, but barely remembered it.

I started listening to The History of Rome and Revolutions by Mike Duncan recently, good stuff.

I plowed through the entire History of Rome ... good stuff. Just could not fight through Revolutions but did know out a couple. By the end of Rome, my son would say: "Welcome ... to the History of [farts, butts, turds, etc.]"

You one of those who think that guy “destroyed” the twitter execs? He “destroyed” them by bringing up unknown people who received warnings or bans and he expressed shock that the twitter ceo didn’t personally know the details. No one even knows who he is much less his followers.

What it proved is they're ok with people threatening to murder non liberals, and by implication they're ok with the action taking place.  I'm not sure what other conclusion one could come to other than the people who run Twitter support the killing of anyone they oppose ideologically.

Holy shit, Dr. Death.

The operation narrations were excruciating.  JFC.

Postscript.  Two months after listening to this my back went out.  I had an MRI on Friday (didn't think I would make it through that simple procedure, but a double dose of Xanex certainly helped).

Right leg is numb, burning, painful, etc.  Can't get comfortable without the drugs.

Doctor should read the MRI results tomorrow.  Wish me luck, if you wouldn't mind.

I'm working my way through History of Byzantium now.  Picks up right where History of Rome left off and just keeps on going.  Does a great job of following Mike Duncan's form, but add in some interesting side topics as they relate to Rome/Byzantium (i.e., the rise of Islam, Iconoclasm, etc.).  Really good stuff.  I'm about half-way through now.

Another great series from Wondery is “American Scandal”.

There are, I think, five seasons so far. Each season is 4-5 episodes. Each episode is around 40-50 minutes.

The seasons focus on, duh, famous American scandals - Iran-Contra, Exxon Valdez, Elliot Spitzer, BALCO, and the Hare Krishna Murders.

The host, Lindsay Graham - not that one! - is very engaging. And they really go beyond the headlines and surface that we usually get.

Great production value too.

I’m listening to the Exxon Valdez one right now. They describe what it was like when some local fishermen go to a small island two days after the spill to see if rumors of wildlife being in distress is true. Exxon was denying the reporting.

The way they describe the sounds and sights of hundreds of otters and sea lions and deer and birds and bald eagles dead and dying and literally screaming and chewing their own limbs off and gouging their own eyes out.....well, I was crying while listening.

Wondery is putting out great content.

That's one of my favorites. I really like BALCO and am loving the Hare Krishna ones because I knew only the headlines of the former and the latter ... without speech. I mean I remember those goobers from 80s TV but had no idea the level of insanity. The others were really good too as I was too young to really know a ton about the details of Iran-Contra and the Valdez.

Like everyone else, I had just heard to spin on Hazelwood ... cannot believe I'm typing this, but he seemed like the only stand-up guy in the entire episode and paid the biggest price. On Iran-Contra, still not sure how arming the Contras bad, arming the Mujahadeen okay ... basically the same thing in terms of violating the Boland Amendment's spirit. The only difference seems to be who was doing it.

I really wanted to finish that one, but it was tough to follow Duncan. I need to go re-visit. I have a newfound love for Orthodoxy Christianity and the Roman-Byzantium history.

It started slow for me, but then I realized that I was going from Duncan at peak form to Pierson trying to find his footing.  Once he hits his stride, it takes off.  I like that he occasionally goes off of the main "Emperors and people in high places" narrative and into the nitty gritty of Roman life (like the day to day life in a city, or the Q&A at the end of each century) that Duncan did not.  I find those more in depth sidebars to help my understanding and enjoyment of the overall narrative.

Supreme Court just overturned Curtis Flowers’ sixth conviction for murder. This case was featured in In the Dark season 2. Its pretty amazing. He may have done it, but i don’t think you can prove it without reasonable doubt.

good.  Overturned on racial discrimination due to jury strikes.  They need an independent state prosecutor to look at the case and see if it should be re-tried (it shouldn't in my view).

I think he probably did it, or at least it's more likely than not that's he's guilty, but that's not good enough for a criminal conviction.

On my second run through because I'm jonesing hard for Season 2.  The Harper Valley PTA series, Louvin Bros, and Kershaw Bros episodes were my favorite, but the whole damn thing is pure brilliance.

Coe's other podcast, Your Favorite Band Sucks, is fucking hilarious.

“Gladiator” is really good.

It’s from the people at Wondery and the Boston Globe Spotlight investigate team - the team featured in the movie “Spotlight” and their investigation that exposed the Catholic Church abuse scandal in Boston.

It’s about Aaron Hernandez and without spoiling anything, everyone from his high school principal to Urban Meyer to Bill Belicheck come out looking bad.

They were able to obtain the recordings of all Hernandez’s phone calls from jail so you get some information straight from the horse’s mouth.

His brother and agent and lots of other people close to him participate as well.

Hernandez is an absolute trash bag but everyone around him weren’t exactly covering themselves with glory either.

Last podcast on the left.

Had a episode Wednesday with Dan Akroyd as a guest. He’s truly way deep in on the paranormal and aliens. Pretty interesting to hear what he has to say.

Just listened to it.  I'm not paranormal or extraterrestrial guy but now I think I might be.

Also watched the Great Outdoors last night.  Still holds up

To Live and Die in LA. - Story about an aspiring actress who disappears from LA. Main suspect is her sort of boyfriend (another aspiring actor), who is engaged to another chick. Produced by Payne Lindsey but (thankfully) he's not the host, though the host shares some of his tendencies. The reporting follows the story in real time and there's a few twists and turns. Actually has somewhat of a closed ending unlike all of the other missing persons podcasts where you never get any questions answered. Worth a listen.

I started Culpable by the same people, and so far so good.  About a guy who commits suicide in his apartment while his GF and friend are there, but the evidence suggests it wasn't a suicide.

What are thoughts on bundyville?  I’ve been reading good things on twitter about it.

to answer my own question, I'm enjoying the Bundyville podcast which isn't that many episodes.  It's about the Bundy family fight against the fed govt, and the stand-offs they've created.  Full of rogue LDS members, sovereign citizens, and what to seems to me to be a fair account with both sides.  There are interviews with the Bundys included.

Just listened to Dr. Death. It’s about a Dallas neurosurgeon that was permanently injuring patients (including his best friend). Kind of makes you lose faith in medical care. It’s absolutely insane that it is a true story. It is really well done.

New season of 30 for 30 dropped, and this time it's a 5 parter on 1 subject, Donald Sterling.

I'm pretty bummed that they went away from what makes 30 for 30 so great, the variety of subjects. I feel like they could've done this big 5 parter but also sprinkled in the usual 1 part stories that we love.

Having said that, The Sterling Affair is pretty good. I knew he was a piece of shit, but this really digs deep into what an absolute loon he is. Dude thought Blake Griffin was hispanic for fucks sake.

Been doing chunks of Hardcore History.  Good stuff, but I have to take some time away from it or otherwise I get exhausted from Carlin's love of his own voice.

Wrath of the Khans was amazing.  Wrapping up WWI now.  Guy's pedantic, and I love his breadth and depth of analysis.
