Media Bias Thread

Our media is simply disgusting. Tom Cotton wants to ask the question of where COVID19 came from, and the media went apeshit in defending China. Why do they defend China? What is their interest in protecting the totalitarian genociders, outside of their common ideologic leanings?

https://www.rawstory.com/2020/02/goper-tom-cotton-slammed-for-pushing-china-virus-conspiracy-one-step-removed-from-anti-vaxxer-rubbish/

WaPo claims it was "already debunked". How could even have done that? You don't have access to the informatin required to know that. Only China has that information. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/02/16/tom-cotton-coronavirus-conspiracy/ The WaPo is fucking straight up lying.

Does the Lancet publish consipiracy theories? I don't think so. A report stated there was no connection between the index case and the mear market. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30183-5/fulltext

Quote

27 (66%) patients had direct exposure to Huanan seafood market (figure 1B). Market exposure was similar between the patients with ICU care (nine [69%]) and those with non-ICU care (18 [64%]). The symptom onset date of the first patient identified was Dec 1, 2019. None of his family members developed fever or any respiratory symptoms. No epidemiological link was found between the first patient and later cases. The first fatal case, who had continuous exposure to the market, was admitted to hospital because of a 7-day history of fever, cough, and dyspnoea. 5 days after illness onset, his wife, a 53-year-old woman who had no known history of exposure to the market, also presented with pneumonia and was hospitalised in the isolation ward.

Why can't you ask the question? Would it be so hard to believe? Why does the media protect the powerful, they were supposed to defend the people against the powerful entities which abuse the people. That was their job.

No, it probably wasn't the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but it's entirely reasonable to point out that the coincidence is more than a few sigmas from the mean. China deserves ZERO benefit of the doubt, but the corporate media cover for the ChiComs because why? Because Tom Cotton is Republican? WTF?

Corporate media protecting corporate interests. Disgusting.

Sanders campaign manager says Fox has been more fair than MSNBC.

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/bernie-sanders-campaign-manager-slams-msnbc-says-fox-news-more-fair/

Quote

Bernie Sanders’s campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, has accused MSNBC of employing “double standard” in its coverage of the Vermont senator, claiming in an interview published Tuesday that Fox News is “more fair” in critiquing Sanders’s progressive platform.

“That’s saying something,” Shakir told Vanity Fair. “Fox is often yelling about Bernie Sanders’s socialism, but they’re still giving our campaign the opportunity to make our case in a fair manner, unlike MSNBC, which has credibility with the left and is constantly undermining the Bernie Sanders campaign.”

First they came for Elizabeth, and I didn't say anything. Then they came for Bernia, and I said nothing.

Just more examples of how our media elites TRULY believe the majority of the country is ignorant. I wonder if the crickets arrived by electric car or public transit. They really do despise Americans and it shows.

The Facts

Late in the ninth Democratic debate, Bloomberg made this comment: “What I was going to say, maybe we want to talk about businesses. I’m the only one here that I think that’s ever started a business. Is that fair?”

Two seconds passed, and no one else on the stage answered. Bloomberg said, “Okay,” and moved on.

The video takes that minor moment and stretches it to 22 seconds, with reaction shots that make the other candidates look troubled, embarrassed or confused. The video is silent except for cricket sounds. These were all taken from other moments in the debate. For instance, with the help of Elyse Samuels of The Post video team, we identified:

LMAO.  Breathtakingly stupid

The ZOA urges the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to apologize for falsely accusing Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) of antisemitism.  The Senator’s innocent tweet about Mayor Bloomberg’s media buys was not antisemitic.  Moreover, Senator Cruz is a major supporter, defender and friend of Israel, and has done and continues to do extraordinary work on behalf of the Jewish people – including leading Congressional efforts to combat antisemitism.

Just to give context and direct quotes rather than hiding behind a headline about a headline, here's what trump actually said:

Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. Coronavirus. They’re politicizing it. We did one of the great jobs, you say, “How’s President Trump doing?” They go, “Oh, not good, not good.” They have no clue; they don’t have any clue. They can’t even count their votes in Iowa. They can’t count their votes!

One of my people came up to me and said, “Mr. President, they tried to beat you on Russia, Russia, Russia. That didn’t work out too well. They couldn’t do it. They tried the impeachment hoax. That was on a perfect conversation. They tried anything, they tried it over and over. They’ve been doing it since you got in. It’s all turning, they lost, it’s all turning. Think of it. And this is their new hoax.”

He directly compared the impeachment to the coronavirus. He said dems are trying to politicize it to discredit him.

Just break down the sentence, what is the "this" based on a plain reading of his statement in context? To me, a UT graduate, his sentence reads as if he is saying "and this [coronavirus] is their new hoax". And if you can't understand how someone may come to that conclusion not based on a good-faith reading of his words or a politicization of his actions, but just as a plain fucking reading of the english language, then yall are some dumb fuckers.

No he is saying the media's coverage of his handling of the situation is a hoax.  He isn't saying the virus itself is a hoax. He is saying the media is putting out misinformation on how it is being handled.  To compare it to the Ukrainian call he's not saying the call was a hoax he is saying what the media reported was said on the call to be a hoax.

Holy shit. Maybe he didn't get fired.

LOL

I said it in another thread but Chris Matthews gets into elections like Mel Kiper Jr. gets into the NFL Draft.  There is absolutely no way in hell he "retires" the night before Super Tuesday unless someone is figuratively pointing a gun at his head.

I don't know where to post this and it doesn't deserve it's own thread:

It's about the OAN v Comcast/MSNBC/Maddow defamation suit.  The suit is mostly a fishing expedition for a larger antitrust suit against Comcast, but the pertinent background is that Maddow was attacking OAN on air (paraphrased): "OAN is literally Russian propoganda."

Well, the Maddow lawyers filed a brief that the use of "literally" in this context was intended to mean the opposite of literally.

I thought other Surlyites would find this funny.  English is gonna english.

"President Trump, in contradiction to previous claims, told Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera Thursday that he sent Rudy Giuliani to Ukraine and he was “not at all” sorry for it.

...

Trump denied he had ever directed Giuliani to go to Ukraine on his behalf. Trump suggested he did not have firsthand knowledge of Giuliani’s work in Ukraine, but had “heard” of it or “read that someplace.”"

Stellar example, EMAW. Pointing out alleged media conspiracies by bringing up a Birther conspiracy theorist discussing the deliberate lies told on a completely different matter.

It's been well documented that a lot of people live in an echo chamber. Because they only see one side presented, those people are unable to form educated opinions. You can only form an educated opinion by understanding both arguments, and both the liberal and conservative press only present one side.

Or you can decide that everyone who disagrees with you in a nazi, and not worth engaging with. It turns you into a caricature of an adult human being, but most people who post here nowadays only care about the dopamine hit of faux moral superiority. They've been reduced to teenagers. It's why they respond to arguments with insults and ridicule.

Every media outlet has a position. I don't think you can reasonably consume media with understanding the position of the source of the information. So identifying Fox as being biased is incredibly irrelevant. Everybody's biased.

Everybody is biased.  The point about Fox is that they are biased and also play to an insanely stupid group of consumers.

Your point is taken, but you do agree that false equivalencies are pretty dangerous as well?

The pile-on was just starting and this time the sealed sexual harassment settlements were not going to stay sealed.  A story that exemplifies what else in there - The host often walked around without pants and one time tried to stick his penis into a female employee's ear while she was seated at her desk.

That is a hilarious faceplant by MSNBC. If they subsequently address this obvious wreck of a failed point (and they should, although it should be obvious to everyone), I'd be willing to bet they do not continue to insist the numbers referenced in that tweet add up. There are plenty of legitimate ways to illustrate the scale of wealth inequality in this country. For example, pointing out that at a net worth of 58.4 billion, Bloomberg could light a million dollars on fire every single day without fail and it would take him 160 years- multiple lifetimes- to go through all of it. However, if a journalist pointed this out, at the beginning of the clip, you have this way more commonly believed chunk of a fallacy-

"...you should never trust journalists when it comes to maths and numbers and stuff."

False. You should verify the likelihood of accuracy with the best information available based on past track record and be able to determine what warrants further scrutiny. "Never" literally encompasses every news item provided by journalists- don't trust anything they're telling you (except, paradoxically, us).  If Fox News tells me today is March 6, 2020, I have zero issues trusting the accuracy of that information. Aussie commentator (or is he a journalist I shouldn't trust due entirely because he's a journalist?) says I should be suspicious of this so-called date. He wants the benefit of his binary assertion but not the ludicrous burden.

In other words, if you challenged MSNBC on their assertion, and challenged Aussie guy on his, who do you think you'll get the most obstinate pushback from? Who do you think is more likely to insist on arguing "well, I was sorta right"?

No, you're not. At all.
