The one Bond movie that would never be made today is Live and Let Die.  Because it's a totally unwatchable piece of shit.

What?!?  Live and Let Die is delightfully silly and Jane Seymour alone elevates it to watchable.

You realize the rest of us aren't watching it right now?  Why wouldn't it be made today?

I had just forgotten, or never really realized, just how over the top the objectification of the women in this movie was. Seems more prevalent in FRWL than even in other older Bond movies, to me at least.

It’s an awesome movie though if you like bond movies. Go back and watch it. But people would absolutely lose their shit if it came out today. Blazing Saddles might get a worse reaction but probably not by much.

Is it?  LALD was the first Bond movie I ever saw, so it held a special place in my heart for a long time.  Cool theme song and Jane Seymour probably had a lot to do with it.  I challenge you to watch that piece of crap and come back and tell me it's not one of the worst Bond movies.  I've gone on my anti-LALD tirade on the old site, so I might as well bring it to Surly too.

The opening pre-credit scene should always be Bond killing some bad guy and making an awesome escape or something along those lines.  Like the skiing scene in The Spy Who Loved Me.  Do you realize the opening scene of this crapfest is that stupid New Orleans funeral parade?  What in the holy fuck?  Bond isn't even in.  And this is Moore's debut as Bond.  So that's how they decided to introduce the new Bond.  By not having him in it.  And whee we do finally see him, he isn't doing anything cool.  Watch for the first time he says "Bond.  James Bond."  Fucking lame as shit.  It was like an afterthought.  Those two scenes alone ruin the movie.   Complete fuck up by the producers.  Even the little IMDB synopsis is lame as shit:  007 is sent to stop a diabolically brilliant heroin magnate armed with a complex organization and a reliable psychic tarot card reader.

Oh noes!  He's got a complex organization and some hot chick who does card tricks!  There is practically no action in the entire movie.  The highlight, other than Jane Seymour, is Bond using some alligators as steps.  And the 7-up guy as RPM pointed out.  My 8 year old self thought it was cool when he put the inflating capsule in Mr. Big's mouth and made him blow up like a balloon.  48 year old me was wondering what the fuck was wrong with 8 year old me.  Then I remembered I was only 8 and I gave myself a pass.  Hell, Bond didn't even drink martinis, shaken not stirred.  He drank Fuzzy Navels the entire movie!  With umbrellas in them!  It's fucking terrible.  Somehow, it's even worse than Moonraker.   If you can get through the entire movie and report back to this thread that you liked it, I will....actually I don't know what I would do.  Other than lose all respect for you as a Bond fan.  Shit, they didn't even use this guy as well as they did in The Man with the Golden Gun.

There is a Connery one with a scene where Bond sees an assassin in the mirror and pulls a woman in front of him to take the punch.  Can't find the youtube of it.

Was it Dr No when he's kissing some woman and he sees a reflection in her eyeball of an assassin creeping up on him?  He spins around and she takes the bullet I believe.  That might also be the movie where they try to kill him by putting that "deadly" tarantula in his bed?  Film makers could get away with a lot more shit before the internet.

It was the beginning of Goldfinger.  He's kissing the girl who just got out of the tub, notices her hesitate, looks at her eye, sees the guy coming up behind him, and then spins her around to take a club to the head.  But he realized that she was 'bad' at that point, so screw her.

Then he fries the bad guy by knocking the electric fan into the tub after the guy falls into it (foreshadowing Oddjob's demise).

"Shocking.  Positively shocking."

Here begins the best theme song of the franchise as he walks out on the bad guy and girl.

Pile on LALD all you want, it's no Diamonds Are Forever. DAF is by far the sloppiest money grab of the series. The magical Mustang on 2 wheels, the lame gay hit men, props falling apart... it was a shitfest. At the time lil' RPM gave zero fucks because Jill St John.

Gotta go with this one. I think I saw all of the Bond movies mentioned in the theater as a kid and I thought they were all super cool, except Moonraker. As a kid, it’s tough not to love a movie with a bad guy with steel teeth

It's the only Bond flick I haven't seen in all the way thru. I couldn't sit thru it all, it was so outlandishly bad.  Live and Let Die is a classic, if campier Bond flick.

That is so true. The fact that it was just a money grab removed it from consideration for me. They weren’t even trying. LALD was Moore’s debut. They were trying.

Objectification of Bond women?

Pussy Galore, Dr. Goodhead, and Octopussy would all say that is inaccurate.

I got a preadolescent thrill when as an 11-year old my mother forced me to go with her to From Russia With Love.  Get this - she thought it was a travel documentary!  When the belly dancer came bopping out with a jewel in her navel, she said, "Oh son, what I brought you to!" And started to get up to leave.  My eyes were popping out of my head.

I kept telling her the Scenic steppes and onion domes would probably be coming up in a minute or two - and I conned her into watching the whole film.

Hey, it was 1963.  You had to be there.

Just finished watching Goldfinger. The most objectifying part of the whole film is the "man talk" slap-on-ass scene. Outside of that it's pretty much an action-film product of its era.

In fact - me being young - and not checking the date before watching - I was surprised it was made as early as '64. It ages pretty damn well, and while it isn't politically correct by any stretch it also isn't a super egregious example of objectification.

Yeah it's a bunch of old white guys as the main characters and Bond goes through half a dozen broads but it also doesn't take itself super seriously. I loled quite a few times and "Pussy Galore" seems pretty harmless and more of a tounge-in-cheek self satirization if anything.

They knew what kind of movie they were making and what the audience would be - and I can tell you that* young bucks in the 21st century find it just as captivating and entertaining as you older guys did 30, 40, 50 years ago.

*also you can stream it as well as a lot of other Bond flicks on Amazon prime video

Agree. I’ve seen Goldfinger a handful of times in the not too distant past. It’s my favorite bond movie, though like the poster above I will sit down and watch any SC or RM Bond movie. I think it’s a function of growing up with them in a time when there really wasn’t anything else like them.

But FRWL is definitely more over the top with the womanizing than GF (even considering Pussy Galore). Which is what surprised me.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

TRWL and Dr. No are the best of the James Bond flicks (pre Daniel Craig) IMO. There's a boat load of female objectification in those two ...bless their hearts....

What's funny is it really shed some light on how hard they've tried to fight against the political incorrectness of earlier films in recent years. M being a female, Q being the nerdy kid right out of college, Moneypenny being black, Bond having HIS heart shattered in Casino (which would be my fav and what I think is the best Bond overall).

Not complaining about any of those things (the newest Moneypenny is fine as fuck) but there was definitely a light-bulb moment where I thought, "ah... this makes sense now".

Maybe I'll do FRWL tonight. I haven't seen some of the Connery's since I was a kid. (*child - I'm still a kid)

Not intending to make a judgement.

Just highlighting that people would lose their shit over this movie today.

That poker scene is Casino Royale though.   Ugh.  It almost ruined the entire movie for me.  Almost.

What specifically? Just read up to remind myself. Yes, the flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush is pretty absurd. I guess you need some suspension of disbelief.

Not sure why they decided to go so over the top. Probably over-catered to the non-poker-playing masses.

With the Moneymaker effect, they had to know that a lot of their target audience probably plays poker.  It was nice how the hands were also shown in the same order you listed them.  That's convenient, but not very realistic either.  This is probably how science guys react to movies with science in them.  There are a lot more of those movies out there, so I guess we should just let it go.  Still, it seemed so out of place in a Daniel Craig Bond movie.  It would have fit perfectly in a Roger Moore Bond film though.

Didn't even think about the order. That makes it even more hilariously improbable. Just running the statistics in my head wondering what the negative exponent would be for that situation ever-occurring. Not only do you need that combination of four hands - you need the permutation that lays them out in order of weakest to strongest.

I tried to watch Rounders the other day and couldn't get through 20 minutes. It was soooooo fucking dumbed-down. If I'm watching a movie that centers around poker I'm not interested in it being spoonfed to me.

Die Another Day.

Sheeeeeit.

Golden Eye is one of my favorite Bond movies.  Man, Brosnan started out great and it went to shit after that.

It seems like all the focus was on the first Brosnan flick to show that Bond had returned (and honestly, the two Dalton flicks were not that bad---they have aged pretty well) and once that was established, they just said fuck it.

Tomorrow Never Dies wasn't too bad, but The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day were just fucking wretched.

On my home NAS, I have ripped the blu rays of every Bond movie to stream.  If I'm cleaning house or just want some background noise, I'll put on most any Bond movie on the tv and go do my thing.  But I've yet to do that to the last two Brosnan movies.

I swear they came up with the "I thought Christmas only came once a year" line and worked out the plot backwards from there.

Has anyone watched that documentary on George Lazenby called Becoming Bond?   It's a must for Bond fanboys.  I'm still not sure I've seen his one Bond movie.  It's kind of like Diamonds are Forever.  I think I half ass watched in 25 years ago and don't really remember much about them.

Lazenby lying about the movies he had acted in was hilarious. Guess there wasn't much of a way to double check everything back then

FRWL is a great one, just edging out Dr. No for me.  I like Goldfinger, but can't get past Kentucky as a Bond destination (yes, I get that's where Ft. Knox is).

Casino Royale is my favorite with SkyFall behind it.

My favorite Roger Moore one is For Your Eyes Only.  Spy Who Loved Me has not aged well IMO.

I saw the Brosnan movies when they came out and can't even watch them anymore.

Moonraker is the worst of the lot.  Diamonds is the worst Connery Bond film.

I have a top to bottom list somewhere that I made the last time the subject came up.

As someone mentioned earlier, most people tend to like the ones that they started/grew up with.  My favorite movie is "The Spy Who Loved Me", and my favorite opening song is Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only".  Hottest Bond Girl for me has to be Ursula Andress.

Our local movie theater played Goldfinger a few years back. When Connery slaps the girls ass and gives the man talk line the entire theater busted out laughing. Way less egregious then what's said or done in most rap songs/videos.

More egregious is when PG tries to resist JB and he just holds her tight until she relents and kisses him.

That arse slap was comically amplified.
