How he fits at Texas: Johnson is a quick fix to the very real problem that is Gary Johnson’s forthcoming graduation. He’s got similar size, great change of direction and speed even if it’s not quite at Johnson’s unworldly level. As a JUCO he already has valuable experience in college schemes and is the kind of “cover him up and let him run wild” rover that Todd Orlando’s D can really maximize. Shorter but quick guys like this are easy to find now but they don’t typically come with two years of college ball experience. – Ian Boyd

Coach says: Strengths — Arrives at the ball in a damned hurry with something to prove. Appears compactly built and thick through the lower body. Takes on blockers and runners willingly and appears quite fearless. Great range and shows some great motor plays in limited tape. Seems assignment sound and delivers a bit shock on his hits. 41 tackles with 8.5 for loss with 5.5 sacks seems about right based on what I see on film. Diagnoses plays quickly. A blitz weapon. Two-year eligible and ready to transfer in spring 2019. Self-reported GPA pretty decent. Areas for Improvement/Concern — De-committed to Iowa State. Not much film on his pass coverage or ball skills. Would like to see this guy playing a little heavier but if he’s Gary Johnson 2.0, I would not care if they left him at this weight.

How this affects Texas: Johnson fits in multiple spots for this defense, but ultimately brings experience and age. This class needs more linebackers and Johnson can be one of those. Herman has no problem mining the junior colleges like with Gary Johnson, so this isn’t a surprise. He’s a December grad so he’d enroll in January, which is incredibly beneficial. – Justin Wells

(Mike Roach) Film Room: Evaluating new Texas commit Caleb Johnson

LB Caleb Johnson, Fullerton College

Recruitment: Johnson committed to Iowa State in July, but he later decommitted and chose Texas over offers from Arkansas, Oregon, Baylor, Ole Miss, Utah, Florida Atlantic and Marshall. A three-star prospect, Johnson originally came out of Vista Murrieta (Calif.), and he’s set to graduate in December. At 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, Johnson is ranked as the No. 3 JUCO outside linebacker in the nation and No. 7 overall prospect in California, according to 247Sports Composite.

Strengths: Johnson has a more compact build with good weight. Johnson shows good initial explosion in his first step, and he has the range to play sideline to sideline. Johnson explodes towards the line of scrimmage at the snap, and he shows great aggressiveness at the point of attack. Johnson is a very strong athlete, and he shows great ability as a blitzing prospect shooting gaps with great speed. Johnson is a strong tackler with fluid movement ability and strong change of direction skills. He shows incredible closing speed when he locks on to a ball-carrier, and he fights through blocks well at the perimeter and point of attack. His motor runs red hot, and he’s able to finish plays with authority.

Areas for improvement: Johnson is a bit of a ‘tweener from a size perspective, and it’s unclear where his initial fit will be. He should work on taking better angles to the ball carrier and staying more disciplined with his gap control. Johnson’s film does not show a lot of coverage, so it is unclear how he looks in that aspect.

Fit for Texas: Johnson can fit immediately in the hole that Gary Johnson will vacate. There’s a large need for linebackers who can play immediately, and Caleb Johnson can fit either position of rover or mac. The bonus is that he has three years of eligibility, which provides a much-needed boost to defensive depth. Johnson has a solid ceiling, and he could be looking at an NFL future if he recovers from injury and develops properly.

Good news. Now maybe the cry babies will be quiet for a few moments?

oh fuck off dude, this team has serious holes on the DL and at RB and they remain to be filled, while our competition is loading up on blue chips we are getting left in the dust.  yet you would rather bury your head in the sand and say “things are great.”  wow, you dumbass.
