Played a short cash session last night and had another fun river decision.

BACKGROUND HANDS
I've been at the table about 45 minutes, and fairly recently won a pretty gross pot:  guy limps, I raise to $12 with KThh, 3 calls, limper jams for $62.  I have about $170 effective.  I think all options are good/bad.  I think the limper can be pretty wide, since the pot is almost his stack size, he can jam wide, it gets through a lot, and if he gets called, he is almost getting 2:1 on his money.  I consider just folding, I consider jamming to isolate, but decide to do what is probably the worst, which is call.  My thought at the time was that the other players likely fold, so now I'm getting 2.2:1 on my money against a wide range, and if they re-jam, I know I'm in trouble.  The problem is that at that point, I'm still getting a great price, and may induce the re-jam by calling.  In retrospect I think jam>fold>>>>call.  One other guy, who was a bad button-clicker, called.  Pot $210, 3 players, 1 allin.  Flop QT7ssc.  I check, he bets $40, I call.  Turn 3c. I check, he bets $55, I had about $65 left and just stick it in, and he calls and says "hit me dealer".  River 5d, I flip up my KT, he shows 88, limp-jammer folds what he says is AK and I scoop.

Few minutes later, I open J9 to $10 in LP, 3 calls.  Flop KQ5, I cbet $20, guy is allin for $21 total, I call and lose to his QJ.

HAND IN QUESTION
10 minutes later, I go $10 UTG with AhJd, 3 calls.  Flop AQ6dd.  I cbet $20, only the BB calls. Pot $80. Turn A.  BB bets $40.  I call here.  Obviously he can have lots of draws, but raising here takes away his bluffs and worse hands. Pot $160. River 8x. BB stacks up all of his chips in a tower and shoves for $275.  Villain is a regular who has been talking lots of poker, including bragging about stacking a guy 3 times the night before, with one being snapcalling AA on 743 flop for $500 and sucking out on 43. I have seen him do the stack all his chips overbet river jam once before in this session, jamming about $200 over a $20 river bet into $50 or so on 876Q4.  I remember thinking at the time that the overbet there seemed horrible unless he had T9. It's great with T9, because a 5 just won't ever fold.  But if he overjammed with just the 5, you just make everything you beat fold, and get stacked off the times you are beat.

So, facing a bet of $275 into $160, holding AhJd on AdQc6d As 8h. WUG?

With that description of villain, and that line he took, it's a boat 99% of the time in a 1/2 game.

That gives me a little pause. You don't see someone overbet twice that often in such a short period of time. Could be two super strong hands or he could be a lagtard.

Turn donk could be a flush draw, but 1/2 villains don't usually don't like to do it on a paired board, especially with it being an ace. If he has any positional awareness he knows you have all the good Aces ([x] put you on AK), and you having the Jd blocks some of his flush draws.

Part of the complicating factor is I think many villains will assume I don't have the ace when I just call instead of raising the turn.  So then the question is, if he has it, what is he hoping I call with?  If he doesn't have it, how often does he think I have an ace, and what does he think I will do with it to his jam?

Similar to IF he was jamming just a 5 on the other hand, what is he hoping to get calls from or make fold?

Edit to add: I don't think he is jamming worse for value here much if at all (maybe AT?). I just don't see him showing up with A7 or something here.  I think his value jams here are AQ (discounted due to pre), 66, A6, A8.  I think he never has QQ or 88.  So I do also block a big chunk of his value range, in addition to my Jd blocking some straight/flush draws for him.

With your preflop raise, if he's got A-6, A-Q, or A-8 (gross), he might be hoping you have a boat you "can't fold".  A couple would be in your range and follow the betting pattern...Q-Q, 6-6.

Without a really good read, I think we're beat and have to fold.

My initial instinct was the same as y'all, to fold.  I specifically was worried about 66 and A6 the most. I again took an unusual amount of time for me to think/talk through the hand. I apologized to the table and said that I had a really big hand (villain said "take your time"), and talked to the villain, asking why so much, what he thought I had, etc.  Villain seemed pretty uncomfortable and then his food delivery showed up, and he seemed pretty frazzled in dealing with the food delivery person.

The live reads (probably aided by the fact that I would be calling with profit) made me decide to call.  I got the two sweetest words in poker: "you're good".  He showed KTo.  He did get some back in a similar spot where I couldn't decide what level we were on, I open QJ to $10, 3 calls, including him in SB.  Flop Q95hh.  I cbet $20, only he calls.  Flop 7x, ck ck.  River 3x, he bets $85, I call, he shows 86o.

Still, cashed out +$503 in a 75 minute session, will take that every day.

I’m still working on table talk. Most of the time they don’t talk back. Several times, though, I’ve asked old regs if I should fold my big hand to their river bet and they’ve truthfully said yes. Always nice when it pays off.

Yeah it usually isn't specific words I'm looking for.  But when someone throws out $275 on the river, and you indicate you think you may have to call, it can be tough for the person to maintain the same demeanor when inside they are like OH FUCK NO PLEASE FOLD PLEASE FOLD WHY DID I DO THIS

Sunday night:
$2/5, sitting in SB w $900. UTG (45ish white reg, solid, playing online poker on his tablet) opens to $25. He had played very few hands this session so I read him as very tight. Being UTG, I assumed TT+,KQ+. 3 callers to me w JhTd. I don’t mind folding here, but I thought I might crack him w a lucky flop and the 3 other callers made it reasonable, so I call and BB comes along too. $150 pot.

JsTs4c rainbow. We check to UTG ($650 behind) who makes it $45. Folds back to me and I pop it to $125. I’d love him to have AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQ here. BB folds and UTG calls, making me think AK and AQ are most likely. I don’t put him on a flush draw other than those and maybe AJ or AT, but of course I have blockers on those, especially given the flop. $400 pot.

Kd. AQ would suck, but I’m great against the rest of the range I have him on. I make it $125. He raises to $275, leaving $250 behind him.

Your play?

I just can't see us beating anything here against a "very tight" player other than AKss, and he has a boatload of outs if he has that, and we have 4 if he has AQ and 0 if he has KK.  I don't think described villain is raising AA or KQ here.  I think he has AKss, AQ, KK, JJ, TT, with my bet being KK.  Puke-fold.

When he calls your flop raise and a pretty bad card comes out for what you think of his range I may check behind on the turn.  It hides the two pair strength of your hand and it encourages a bluff on the river.  It also does leave you open to a gutter ball or a bigger two pair getting there or three of a kind/set.  I'm with the poster above that it feels like KK - puke.

AA, KK, JJ, TT, AsKs, AsQs shove after my c/r on flop so I think we exclude them.

AKo, AQo, AJo, KQo, QJo, Q9, QQ probably calls my c/r on flop.

Of those, who raises me on turn? AKo, KQo, Q9?

I disagree that a "very tight" player is always getting 130 bigs in on the flop with one pair or a "drawing hand". I also don't think AK or AQ without spades always is calling your raise. I don't think AKo is raising the turn. Q9 shouldn't be in his range.

I merely put him on a very tight opening range because of his position and play that night (plus multi tabling). Post flop I think he’s a solid player, absolutely willing to shove on the flop. I don’t think he’s a tight player overall.

That changes things somewhat, as QJ and Q9 can be in his range pre and on the flop, though dunno if he's raising turn with QJ.

I don't think him 3-bet shoving AA or KK on this flop is good though, unless you are against an opponent who simply will never fold a jack or whatever.  Shoving AA or KK just makes you fold your bluffs, and gets him stacked when you have JJ/TT/44/JT.  You aren't folding a big draw to his jam so he isn't protecting his hand either. He should be 3b shoving things like AKss, AQss, KQss, JJ, TT, JT, 44 on the flop.

What were you trying to accomplish by jamming turn?  I don't think he's ever raising turn with AA or AK, why would he?  I don't think he usually has AK except for AKss, and I think if he would raise turn with it here, he probably would have just crammed it on flop, especially given your read that he wouldn't be scared to get it in there. Same with AA, raising turn here when lots of straights and 2 pairs just got home is pretty pointless, if he was going to raise this turn with AA, he might as well 3b all in on flop. If the turn was a blank and he raised, I can imagine an AA wanting to wait for a safe turn card, then raise and force draws to pay big with just one card to come instead of a draw just shrug/getting it in on flop.

You are showing huge strength by check/raising this flop that slams his range, and then firing turn that slams his range. When he raises turn I think fold >>> call/evaluate river >>> jam.

$2/5 tonight. Hand from someone else’s perspective.

UTG (reg, reminds me of a shorter Vijay Singh) opens for $40. This is highly unusual in our room, but I’ve already seen him do it once before in our session, yielding him folds around. I’ve seen plenty of other opens from him of the standard $20 or $25. I’d guess this is something he does w middle pairs. I’m immediately to his left and snap call. This would normally shut down more action, but MP calls too. Then button (a timid 25ish white dude) bumps it to $120 w QQ. UTG pauses a bit. I can’t tell if he was thinking about raising or folding. He calls. I call. MP folds (wtf). $400 pot pre. We’re all $800+ deep

T64 rainbow. UTG and I quickly check the action to button. He decides to check w his QQ. He’ll later say that he had us on TT+ before flop because “you’d not call my $120 pre w AK” (wrong, btw) and the T meant he only beat JJ and there were still two of us in the hand.

T. UTG fires out $220 and I call. Back to button. What should he do?

BTW, his read on me is probably very ABC. I’ve not been out of line all evening.

I don't like his preflop sizing.  I'd rather call QQ than go $120 and just price everyone in and hate about half the flops. I'm going $200 in his spot.  Also, yes LOL MP.

BTN definitely should have bet the flop.  Also, yeah, horrendous read by him that y'all would fold AK here, especially to his small sizing.  As played, as him, I would have bet $150 on the flop.

Now on the turn, BTN has to assume neither of you holds a T unless you hold exactly TT.  I think UTG checks TT again here, so really only you can have TT.  So what would UTG be betting?  JJ, QQ, KK, AA are the only hands that BTN thinks UTG has that would be betting here.  I think UTG can possibly also have AQs and be betting to make AK fold, but BTN doesn't think so.  I think UTG can also have 88 or 99 and may bet those some non-zero amount of time here.

What can you be calling with?  TT, JJ, QQ, KK.  I don't think you can have AA, because you definitely 4b pre (UTG usually 4b AA pre, but may occasionally (foolishly) flat to trap (I think flatting to trap as UTG with AA is much better if BTN used my preferred $200 sizing).

Given his reads, I think it's a pretty clear fold for BTN on the turn. The odds that he has you both beat are pretty slim.  As BTN I would call the $220 if it was my last $220 on the table, but as played, he very well may have a $600 decision on the river which is going to suck unless a Q rivers.

I actually had AQ and JJ before I edited, but I thought you may 3b JJ pre there.  Thoughts on the flatcall pre (I'm fine with it BTW)?  What did you put them on when you flatcalled the 3b to $120?  How happy were you to call turn?  Did you consider a river v-bet?

I’d 3 bet JJ to isolate almost always, but his $40 open seemed to make that unnecessary. I’d put him on 99-JJ (please don’t call, just let me take this down), and maybe 88-QQ. Given the table dynamics at the time (quiet and tight) I really never expected anyone else to join, much less a call and a raise. Had I raised, I would have gone to $100.

Buttons raise tells me AA, KK, AK. I assumed QQ-22, AQ, KQ all flat. UTG call just confirms my read on him as he’s jamming AA and KK.

Checks on flop to button don’t mean anything. Buttons check tells me AK.

UTGs bet on turn I expected before the card even came down. Everything in his range does that and I still feel good against it. Never considered raising it. Buttons fold was not surprising given that I now had him on AK.

I thought about a river bet, but I’ve seen him check raise river before and that would put me in a really bad spot. Plus, I was pretty interested to see what he had.

Yeah, when people open bigger than normal, I usually put them on 99-QQ, AK, with the usual most likely option being exactly JJ (obv since we are holding JJ we have to reduce JJ in opp range).  Those are all hands where people feel "entitled" to win because they have a good hand, but hate playing flops.

If we are ranging BTN that tight pre, did we consider a fold pre to the $120?  Are we check-folding to BTN on this flop if he bets?  If no, are we check-folding to BTN bet and UTG call?  Also if UTG ranges BTN like you do, 4b KK pre would be pretty bad as BTN would have 1 combo of KK, 8 combos of AK, and 6 combos of AA.

I definitely like your play the best of all 3 players.  WP.

Felt like the $120 call was easy.  $80 for a pot of (I assumed) $480.  I planned on claiming any A or K that might hit flop when I called UTG but nixed that plan with the button raise.  I hoped to see a J or some piece of a straight on the flop, of course.  I might call a <$150 flop bet by button, hoping he has AK and my read on UTG stands.

i would have bet turn if UTG hadn’t.

WSOP time.

Who is going this year? Last year was first one I haven't gone to in a long while. Just wasn't feeling my game. Feel a lot better this year. But I will only go if I can freeroll off some winnings at the local poker rooms this month. Right now I would say 50/50.

Gotta vent.

I 3bet from $20 to $65 w AJ and get one caller. Flop AJ4 w two diamonds. I bet $125 into $150 pot and dude calls. 6d. We both check. 10c. I bet $200 into $400 pot and dude shoves and has me covered. I throw in my remaining $100 and he shows A7dd to take it down. Frustrating, but I want him calling me with bad odds all day and brush it off.

Hour later, I 3bet $25 to $75 w QQ, he calls again along w one of two guys who had paid $25. Jd6d2h w two diamonds. I bet $200 into $250 and he calls and other guy folds. 2d. I jam $265 and he calls w fucking K4dd. Miss the river and he felts me again.

This fucking game. I had to leave.

should I head over there for cash games or just hit up the strip?

What’s your location?

Playing cash in the big room at the Rio isn’t that great. They run it too cold, you get no comps, it’s a pain to get over there and back to the Strip. I did it a few times just to see the big room and then never went back. Plenty of good action on the Strip especially now.

staying south so I headed up to Mandalay Bay for some $1/$2 NLHE donk fest action.

Bought in for $300 and didn't win a hand the first hour. Every single flop missed. Finally hit a AT with a A87 flop. I bet out and get 2 callers. Turn a 9, guy bets out, other guy calls, I figure one of them has a strait. Nope, set of 7's vs 2 pair. Pat myself on back for getting out.

Old man in 1 seat didn't seem to sharp and I couldn't get in a hand with him. Get QsJs and raise preflop. Flop is T72, two spades. I fire out and he hems and haws, more than once starts to flip cards in and then finally calls. Turn 5 I bet out again, same thing finally calls. River 10 I fire out again, he thinks for over a minute and finally calls. Shows a AJ off suit.

I had bought another $100 earlier and was down to $150 after that hand. A few hands later I get AJ and a Jxx flop and drive that old man to value town getting some of my money back.

A few hands later I get 44 and the first card out is a 4 and I double up through a guy who had KK and didn't raise preflop. He gets up pissed as hell. "I'm leaving this fucking dirty shithole" "Fuck you dealer you dirty mother fucker" "Wash your hands they are fucking dirty"

Funny he wasn't saying shit when his 84 hit a strait to crack aces or he hit the set of 7's for a big win.

Overall ended up winning $39 but it felt like I won $1000 after being all in multiple times.

$12 of that went to parking. Fuck the casinos for charging for parking, fucking greedy bastards.

For whatever reason, it always feels great to make a comeback from being down quite a bit and quitting ahead for any amount. Also pretty hilarious when players yell at the dealer over the cards that are dealt.

The parking fees suck, I agree. Didn’t realize you had a car. I think the Venetian still has free self parking and their poker room always has good cash game action.

Went over to rio this morning. 1 cash table running so I headed over to Venetian.

You may already know this, but during the WSOP, there are two cash games areas at the Rio. The regular room (last I went was on the casino floor) still has cash games going and it’s pretty dead. You have to walk all the way back to the ballroom area for the WSOP cash games. Not a big deal, hope it goes well at the Venetian. Jam with a sweet draw and scoop a big pot.
