Nah, that's St. Frances in Baltimore: https://deadspin.com/baltimore-high-schools-sick-of-getting-whupped-by-footb-1826437133

St. John's is the UA CEO's alma mater, and has some shady basketball shit going on: https://deadspin.com/under-armour-bosss-alma-mater-wins-shady-hoops-game-ha-1822529498

For anyone that caught the UA ad with Cam Newton coaching a high school team - that was St. Frances!

Between junior and senior years, trips to Brenham, Waller, Tomball, and Magnolia in Houston rush hour traffic. A beating.

During rush hour, it probably takes at least 45 minutes to get from the Bunker Hill exit on I10 to Katy. I would have to consider quitting football if I had to sit on a bus all the way to those places.

Growing up in East Texas, an hour trip to a game was usually good news. Longview being in a Mesquite-Rockwall district, etc. Of course Lufkin had a district of like Alief and shit too.

Saw SLC curbstomped Odessa Permian. Whens the last time Mojo was relevant?

I had a sprawling high school division, so most away games/meets were at least an hour. It was nice - put in some headphones, zone out, look at the scenery and get pumped up. Get a movie and some cards out if it was a big trip out to Central PA or some shit.

Leander is terrible. Opening Glenn hurt them a lot.

That area is exploding though on 2243 so it won't take long to get enrollment back up. And I can't ride my bike any more on 279. 2 years ago we would do a loop on 279/Bagdad - Liberty Hill - Round Mountain Rd. - 2243. No more.

I didn't know there is a central Port Arthur. You grew up in Pennsylvania? My dad grew up in Youngstown and he would always talk about all the QBs from western PA.

High school was in New Jersey, and we had games from Baltimore to Mercersburg, PA to Connecticut. But it was water polo and swimming for me (our football team had the same trips, though)

That said, can't imagine how long the commutes must be for the West Texas schools - like how far did Reese Moore have to travel going to Seminole?

I thought you grew up in the Bay Area?

Yeah, Lufkin and John Tyler have absolutely no history or rivalries with Longview

That old 5A district was nasty. Marshall, John Tyler, and Lufkin all won state in short time in the 90s, and Longview was ALWAYS close but couldn't close (until last year). Hell, even Tyler Lee won state a little later, I think.  Funny to think that Texarkana was a doormat back then but has a powerhouse HS now.  I'm clearly an old.

Hamlin is playing two neutral site games in non-conf. And they're still long commutes.

Back in the stone ages westlake was in a district with Waco, Temple, Coperas Cove, etc.  Couldn't get in district with AISD schools because Austin said travel to Westlake was too far.

Hamlin played Wheeler( 184 miles from Hamlin)  at Childress( 114 miles)

and will Stratford( 308miles)  at Abernathy(150 miles) in 2 weeks.

They  host NewHome this coming week.  The Leopards are only 127 miles away.

Not to mention the Pipers had a very tough 46-44 loss this weekend to local Hawley.

That's one hell of a non-District schedule.  Creative, but some tough as hell teams.

Man, I remember when a 30 minute highlight show on Saturdays showing 15 second vignettes of a handful of games was a big hairy deal. I was just geeking out a second ago realizing that you can get highlights these days for practically any team, no matter how small, no matter how bad, in the entire state of Texas at the point and click of a mouse.

What will they think of next?

I think that was in '86 and '87 when Westlake first went up to 5A.  Football, Basketball...those were some long bus rides.

My dad did that ride and stopped doing it before he moved in ‘17. Not safe anymore.

yeah, is Kingville a knight in the Alice in Wonderland porn parody, or what?

You fools don't know about the Kingsville Brahmas and mighty Alice Coyotes? Coastal Bend rival towns/high schools. Alice is usually good, Kingsville always sucks.

That was 87 and 88.  I was on the basketball team at Waco High and we had some long road trips for Tuesday games with school the next day.

Back in those days Bee Cave road was dangerous as fuck.  Highwaymen and such.  Stage coach robberies.  Attacks by wild animals.  Dysentery.  Flash flooding at Eanes creek.

Westlake beat Akins a lot to not much.

Meh. The teams in this district suck.

Just curious, who’s the best qb Dodge is running out there right now in your opinion? And yeah I know it’s hard to tell against shit ass teams like Akins, but still.

I know all three kids personally and admit that I do have biases not based on football skill set so i will try and set those aside.

Micheaux is the pretty clear #1 in my mind.

Raw skills wise Klubnick is probably the best but he is not ready yet. He bails out of the play the minute anyone gets near him in the pocket. Dodge is playing him to get him ready for next year. The kid is also an arrogant shithead and is as dumb as a rock.

Willoughby is a great kid from a great family but is behind the other two.

^^^^^^^^^^^

on a Friday afternoon/ evening from NJ to Connecticut?  That would be such a fucking beatdown.

My high school basketball team (Taipei American Tigers, holla!) had to fly to Okinawa for one of the road trip games. Took two C-47s to haul the team, cheerleaders, and a few parent chaperones.

No kidding. They seem like they dont suck.

Luckily PG runs about 8 different plays on offense for the last 4 years so they are easy to figure out.

I like that about their offense.  They might as well hold up the clipboard like the opposing defense is running scout team, and they’re still gonna out-execute their opponent.  Doesn’t matter if you know the play or not...

Their Wing T/ Slot T and variations are pretty fun to watch. They will do it in a kinda hurry up fashion and use a lot of motion. It can be tough to defend and they can and will throw the ball too. I think they were 7 on 7 runner up in 2018.

What I really like about PG is that they're about the only Wing T/ Slot T team that can actually throw the ball.  Navarro fans are really annoying because they'll get ahead of a team by 40 and then try out a few pass plays with no pressure against bad teams,  so that by the end of the year the QB has nice passing numbers and the fans say, "No we can pass -- look at his completion percentage!"  And then of course, they run into Cuero or WOS in the playoffs and they get behind and they have to pass, and they can't pass worth shit.

PG basically won state against WOS because of their passing.

Another thing about their offense is their “sugar huddle” about three yards off the ball. They quickly turn, lineup, and start the play. They should probably draw more penalties than they do, because sometimes the motion man is going in motion while others are getting set. However, it’s rarely called.

If you watch Liberty Hill in the playoffs, you can tell in the first two minutes if they're going to lose or not.  If the refs won't call them for not coming set for 1 second, they have a good chance of winning.  If they get two illegal procedure calls in the first couple of minutes, they're going to lose.
