Seahawks DT Poona Ford ranked No. 23 at his position by Pro Football Focus

The Seahawks roster improved a great deal in the 2022 NFL draft (at least on paper), but there are still some big holes theyā€™ll need to fill before theyā€™re ready to compete again. One of the positions they donā€™t need to worry about is defensive tackle, where theyā€™re about as well set up as any team in the NFL. Seattle has a talented and deep rotation of interior defensive linemen, headed up by 2021 starters Al Woods and Poona Ford.

Both fly under the radar more than they should, but Ford in particular is one of the most underrated players in the game at his position. Some folks know the score, though. Ford was recently ranked No. 23 on PFFā€™s list of theĀ leagueā€™s top defensive tackles.

ā€œFord emerged onto the scene as an undrafted free agent in 2018, grading out extremely well (90.3 PFF grade) in a limited role. He built up his snap count in each of the past three seasons to 802 defensive snaps in 2021 ā€” 10th-most among all interior defensive linemen. While he might not quite be repeating his grading success from his rookie season each year, Ford has still earned PFF grades above 73.0 in each of the past three campaigns.ā€

Ford is entering the final year of his current contract and should be one of the next players to get an extension. He will turn 27 in November.

Ā

Most recent deal was 2yrs (2021 and 2022).Ā Ā

Wonder if Seattle considers restructuring and extending Poona's contract before the 2022 season starts or lets Poona test free agency after this season ??

Bills signing DT Poona Ford to one-year deal

May 2nd,Ā Ā Kevin PatraĀ Around the NFL Writer

The Buffalo Bills have added another veteran in the aftermath of the 2023 NFL Draft.Ā Ā NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday that the Bills are signing defensive tackleĀ Poona FordĀ to a one-year contract. Buffalo subsequently announced the signing.

One of theĀ top remaining free agents, Ford turned down more money elsewhere to join the Bills, per Pelissero.

Undrafted in 2018, Ford spent the past five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. The 27-year-old generated 7.5 sacks and 181 tackles, with 28 for loss, during his career in Seattle.

At 310 pounds, Ford boasts nimble feet on the interior, able to penetrate and hold a gap.

Ford is coming off a down season overall in Seattle, but netted a career-high three sacks in 2022. The Bills are counting on the penetrator (PoonatratoršŸ¤˜) bouncing back in 2023.

It's a big (literally) signing for Buffalo, which adds experienced depth on the interior to a team withĀ Ed Oliver,Ā Daquan Jones,Ā Jordan PhillipsĀ andĀ Tim SettleĀ at the defensive tackle position. The Bills got moved around on the defensive line inĀ their playoff lossĀ to Cincinnati, so signing a player with Ford's skillset adds another playmaker up front.

Like general manager Brandon BeaneĀ signingĀ Latavius Murray, the Bills added a veteran to a position they eschewed during the draft -- as they selected no players along the line. As with Murray, Ford chose Buffalo to chase a Super Bowl ring.

I know itā€™s a year oldā€¦ but what a weird thing to say after a guyā€™s 5th year in the league.Ā
