My youngest freaked out at first, but then she realized the older two don't even notice and she's fine with them, now.

It has been a terrible week -- today we lost the nicest dog to ever walk the earth. Abby had a bunch of seizures Wednesday, got worse Thursday and spent the day at the vet. When we picked her up yesterday, she couldn't stand, swallow, or see. After no improvement, we had her put out of her misery this afternoon. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you hug your dogs extra tight and tell them that they're good dogs.

What a beautiful dog. So sorry you had to endure this.  Godspeed on the healing.

Edit: And yes, I'll be hugging the hell out of Rambo tonight.

Damn, I didn't need to see this. Might be taking my oldest for a trip to the Rainbow Bridge tomorrow.

Good girl, Abby.

Full disclosure, I tried to post this before I saw the sad news. This is the best and worst thread on ST. Damn I hate the pain. Godspeed Abby. We dont deserve you and we wont replace you, but we will remember you as the best dog.5e54af6a672e5d5036720cdd884cd3e0.jpg

@Beau, Abby...So sorry.  Nothing worse than having to put your best friend down.  I've done it more times than I like to think about but the next one that comes along helps to somewhat ease your pain of today.  Memories will always be your friend.

Is that a JR? Mine isn't afraid of storms at all. It's like he doesn't even notice them.

Edit - Just saw your post Deej, sending white light.

I'm getting drunker than Cooter Brown tonight.  Gave her enough meds to get her right there with me.

Poor girl.

Sorta.  She showed up on our doorstep when we lived in Louisiana about 9 years ago.  Vet said "terrier" and a little Pit.  When walking several people have asked is she is JR.  She weighs about 40 pounds which seems a little heavy for just JR.  Best dog we've ever owned.

Emma lives to see at least one more day. Her back legs weren't working and she would scream if you tried to touch her back end. Readjusted her meds. Happier today. It's just a matter of time at her age, but she's comfortable at the moment.

And today, Penny was having some serious gastric distress after eating a baby bird knocked from the trees during the storm. Stretching her head skyward, eyes glazed over, in obvious discomfort. Loaded her in the car and drove her to the emergency vet. Get her out of the car and she immediately goes after a squirrel on the sidewalk. Suddenly she is better. Lol.

Took her home without going in to the vet to pay what would have been a ridiculous amount of money. She still is a bit quiet, but no longer in distress. Keeping an eye on her. If she's still down Monday, I'll take her to her regular vet.

Thanks. You never get out of those places for less than $2k.

No kidding.  My trip to the regular vet for 2 of ours the other day turned into $450 after blood tests.  Just paid to have babygirl (see above) fixed.  Them dogs are spending all my stimulus.  What will become of the guitar and amp sellers now.

You lucky SOB. Dewey let us know the other night he did not appreciate the loud thunderstorms. But thankfully no barking. He was shaking. Just needed extra cuddles

This thread is so tough sometimes. Our almost 13 year old lab scares me from time to time. She has a tumor now on her paw. She can still jump on the bed and is still loving to eat and go on short walks.

On a more positive note we moved into a new hood and we found this gem of a greenbelt. I can only take the young’n.

Chipmunk patrol resumed on the pacific crest trail yesterday (gifford pinchot nat forest trail heads opened friday)

Had to head in the direction of lower elevations due to persistent snow pack.  fwiw, almost got stuck in a random snow covered section of a forest road with deep tire ruts 10 miles into the wilderness having seen no one heading in.  Would have survived, but man that would have sucked.

My boy Chief is sick. He got sick about two days ago, and being the curious boxer that he is it's not extremely unusual for him to get into something/eat something that he shouldn't and be sick for about a day. As I went to sleep yesterday (around noon) I asked my mom to keep an eye on him as I was surprised that he wasn't feeling better by then. She woke me up a few hours later telling me we needed to take him to see a vet. He was finally up on his feet but he couldn't walk, he was off balance, he was disoriented, his head was cocked to the side, his tongue was hanging out of his mouth, and his eyes wouldn't stop darting back and forth. It was pretty hard to watch my boy like that.

I got up and drove us all to a 24 hour emergency vet clinic in Round Rock where their initial guess was that it was one of two things: vestibular disease (common in older dogs/boxers, and treatable), or a brain tumor (common in older boxers, and deadly). We sat in the parking lot with Chief for a little over an hour before he could be admitted. We had to wait in the parking lot for another couple of hours before they told us to go home, and that they'd be doing tests on him and would call us later.

I got a call around 11 last night saying that it wasn't vestibular disease (bad news), but that they didn't know what it was. They said his white blood cell count was high and they didn't know why, and they asked my permission for more tests and I gave it to them (I'm on disability and I get $522/month- right now the bill is $3400 and i don't even care as long as they take care of him). They said that a neurologist would see him and that he would call me in the morning.

The neurologist called today and said that Chief has a serious inner ear infection which certainly affected his balance/ability to walk. However, they had to perform a spinal tap, and this revealed that Chief has meningitis which they fear may have spread to his brain. That said, they are hopeful that they caught it early enough to get Chief to be able to recover. He's going to stay at the hospital for at least another night, and they will call me again tomorrow with an update.

Everyone loves their dog, but i have no problems saying this- Chief is damn near all I have. I lost my job in 2015 because of my health problems, and had to move back home to my mom's house and haven't been able to work more than one very seasonal job since then. With all of my friends and peers being married/working/raising kids/out of state/etc, all I really have is my mom and our two dogs, and Chief is my boy. He turned 9 on February 20th, and he has so much boundless energy and was in such good shape that I expected him to possibly be around longer than me. Now all of that is up in the air, and I am disconsolate. Please pray for my boy if that's your thing. I just want him to be able to come home and be himself again. I love my boy Chief more than anything.

Samson is getting snipped on Friday around midday. What do I need to know about after care that day? My daughter is having a couple of friends over which might get him wound up.

He’s up to 40 lbs now and the vet said “He’s gonna get bigger”

He will need at least 1 rub n tug a day for 3-5 days. Ask your vet how long they recommend.
