I originally posted these back in April 2019 when Lulu had an emergency surgery to remove a cantaloupe size growth on her spleen that ended up being benign. She recovered like a champ and has been awesome. Fast forward to February this year and we found a small growth on her liver that we thought was cancer.  We hesitantly decided to cut her open again and all went perfect.  Also a benign growth.

She has had a slow developing mass on her heart that we have been monitoring for a few years, and in her last surgery in February they opened a tiny pericardial window to help drain fluid.  We took her in for her normal check up last week and bloodwork showed some mild anemia.  She got worse over the course of a week with labored breathing, lack of energy, etc.  We took her to Gulf Coast vet yesterday and they confirmed this evening that the heart mass is getting bigger, forcing fluid near her lungs and abdomen.  Not much we can do anymore except just wait it out, keep her comfortable and spoil the shit out of her.  Could be a matter of days a few months, but we will put her down if she shows any signs of suffering. I am absolutely gutted tonight.  We got her in London back in 2010, and are literally less than 2 months from moving back.  But I don't see her making the trip.

I'm sorry.  Buy that girl lots of hamburger and eggs and give her plenty of snuggles and hugs.

so I’m not starting a thread for this and I figured this was the best place for it, the dog experts... my sister lives in highland hills just northwest of 2222/mopac.  this morning this dog came out of a creek bed and was just staring at her in her car.  anyone know what kind of dog this is?  something about it is creepy to me.  I don’t think it’s a coyote?

Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully you will get many more happy days with her. We are going through a similar situation that I'll share separately.

After not really shedding much at all since we got him in April, Sam started shedding profusely a few weeks ago. Like sweep and vacuum daily, and we have to brush him before he gets in the pool. Any reason to be concerned?

He also eats a ton (five cups of dry food a day) and doesn’t put on any weight (40 lbs now).

Otherwise he seems to be his normal likable dumbass self.

Buzzrock,  based on that picture, he looks to be at a healthy weight.  He must be very active or has a high metabolism because 5 cups does seem like a lot for a 40 lbs dog.  I am sure that there are supplements out there to try to help reduce shedding but the truth is labs are notorious shedders. His coat looks good too, by the way.

How old his he? is he pure lab? He is very healthy looking so I don't think you have anything to worry about but a vet might have very good suggestions about what to feed him and what might help with his coat. For instance, how hard chlorine is on his coat might be a factor to take into account. I'd get expert advice on that.

Love his sleeping pose!

He’ll be one next month (we think, he’s a rescue) and the pool is salt water so pretty low chlorine.

He usually sleeps flat on his back with a his hind feet up in the air. He’s a doofus.

Shit, Bruce weighs 140# and eats 6 cups a day. Pepper is somewhere north of 100# and she gets 4 because she's chonky.

5 cups at 40# is a lot, but puppies eat a lot.

I love it when they are so exhausted and at peace they sleep on their back with their junk in the air.

Toby sleeps nuts up (assuming he still had any) a lot of the time. Hell, even when he’s awake, if you get anywhere near him while he’s laying down he lifts his leg or rolls over and expects you to rub his belly. The damn dog is rotten, but he’s 100% my mutt at this point. I’ve said it before, but I think I may trade the wife and kids (teenage girls and all the fun that comes with it) for the dog. Riding home, stopped and caught him on his back all tangled up covering his face like normal.

The roll over for a belly rub, they lick their lips, and look at ya, it’s the best.

He’s a little more sneaky about it. Usually he’s laying on his side and if you get close he slowly lifts his back leg to see if he can con you into bending over. If he sees you start to  bend down then he’ll roll over. He doesn’t want to waste the effort on rolling over if you’re not going to oblige.

Our guy’s still young and naïve, but he gets it every time. He even wakes up from a nap when you get close to him and rolls over.

I posted back in October when Shelby had internal bleeding and a spleen mass. She had emergency surgery and was given a 50-50 chance of living, which she did but the mass was hemangiosarcoma, a malignant cancer that has almost always metastasized at the time of diagnosis. We opted for chemotherapy and she was expected to live 3-4 months, 6 months if we were really lucky. It’s been 9 months and she’s been the happiest dog with incredible energy and personality. The vet has said she’s a miracle dog and we’ve been very thankful, but we know she’s on borrowed time.

This past week she took a turn for the worse. We were unfortunately out of town when it first happened but we got home and took her to her vet oncologist today. She’s very anemic which typically means bleeding, but luckily the abdominal ultrasound and chest x-ray didn’t show anything. She has some kidney problems so maybe it’s her kidneys or maybe GI, we aren’t sure. The vet offered her treatment with a blood transfusion and medicine, which we accepted. It’s pretty expensive so it wasn’t an easy decision, but she’s beat the odds on her previous issues and her quality of life has been outstanding until the last few days, so we want to give her the chance to rebound again. Crossing our fingers that she comes home happy again this week.

We know the day will come when she’s no longer fixable and we’re prepared to say goodbye if it appears she’s suffering with no available treatment. We are just hoping this isn’t that point and that she has more good days ahead.

By the way, her vet oncologist is incredible - Dr. Allstadt at Veterinary Specialists of North Texas. Hopefully no one needs these services, but if you are in the Fort Worth area and your pup has cancer, she is highly recommended.

Crosby was originally diagnosed with a spleen mass.  But another doc looked at the ultrasound and said it looks more like it's on the liver.  He is getting biopsied Monday, and if it's malignant, with it on the liver, he's officially on the clock.  If it's benign, which has a higher likelihood of it being when it's on the liver vs the spleen, we have it removed and we'll see how much time it buys.  But the big lug turned 11 today.  A whole lot of expense for a dog that's kind of on borrowed time as it is.  But what do you do?  I can't make his life a financial decision.  My kids would probably rather put me down than him.
