Best opening lyrics of all time

Goredho

Recommended Posts

In the twilight glow I see them
Blue eyes cryin' in the rain

Coffee black, cigarettes,
start this day, like all the rest

These arms of mine, they are lonely
Lonely and feeling blue

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly

If you’ve got the money, honey
I’ve got the time

Hey pretty baby are you ready for me
It's your good rockin' daddy down from Tennessee
I'm just out of Austin bound for San Antone
With the radio blastin' and the bird dog on

Everybody's high on consolation
Everybody's trying to tell me what is right for me, yeah

On a warm summer's eve
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with the gambler
We were both too tired to sleep

Hey, hey mama said the way you move
Gon' make you sweat, gon' make you groove

Everyone considered him the coward of the county...

See me ride out of the sunset
On your color TV screen

Rumour spreadin' 'round
In that Texas town

Caught between the twisted stars the plotted lines the faulty map
that brought Columbus to New York

This band started out at their creative peak and rapidly descended.  Not only a great opening line to a song, but a great opening line to a debut album & career:

Quote

Step out the front door like a ghost
Into the fog where no one notices the
Contrast of white on white.

When Waylon thunders

"I've always been crazy but it's kept me from goin insane"

Isbell has some epic shit

"On a lark
On a whim
I said there's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them

And his fist
Cut the smoke
I had an eighth of a second to wonder if he got the joke"

"A heart on the run keeps a hand on the gun
You can't trust anyone
I was so sure what I needed was more
Tried to shoot out the sun"

Kris
"Take the ribbon from your hair
Shake it loose and let it fall"

^ Beat me to the Seger lyrics.

She stood there bright as the sun on that California coast / He was a Midwestern boy on his own
She looked at him with those soft eyes so innocent and blue / He knew right then he was too far from home

Well I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt

Cowboy, cowboy
Well, I'm packin up my game and I'ma head out west

There she goes shaking that ass on the floor
Bumpin' and grindin' that pole

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.

I hear Mariachi static on my radio
And the tubes they glow in the dark

Roland was a warrior from the Land of the Midnight Sun
With a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done

I want a big red nose I want some floppy shoes
I want a squirtin' flower squirt it on you

Them boys from Oklahoma roll their joints all wrong

Oh says Red Molly to James "That's a fine motorbike.
A girl could feel special on any such like"

Well it sure didn't take too long
I woke up one mornin', she was gone

I dreamed about killing you again last night,
And it felt alright to me

This is my choice for sure.  Isbell also has a ton that I love including:

I used to think that this was my town
What a stupid thing to think
I hear you're fighting off a breakdown
I myself am on the brink

There's an answer here, if I look hard enough
There's a reason why I always reach for the harder stuff
It wasn't my daddy's way
He was down in the mines all day
I know he wanted more than mouths to feed and bills to pay

Haven't been wasted in a long time
But tonight it feels just fine
Riding home with the windows up, alone with a plastic cup of real good wine

Also, John Moreland's songwriting is just excellent:

You lived a life of pride, you lived a life of pain
Trying to pray away stormy weather
Sweeping up the dust, reaching out for yesterday
Yesterday is a blade, sharp as ever

I started up the engine and headed for the place we met
I prayed to Sister Juliette, smoked three packs of cigarettes
I'm still trying to figure out forgiveness, keep track of all of my sins
Just tell me you don't love me, and I promise I won't darken your doorstep again

I wanna fall asleep forever
I wanna learn to disappear
Can you take away the mess that’s been building in my chest
Drowning out the song I used to hear

Well my daddy didn’t pull out, but he never apologized.  Rock and roll means well, but it can’t help tellin’ young boys lies.

Honey don’cha be yellin’ at me while I’m cleanin’ my gun.  I’ll warsh the blood off the tailgate ‘fore deer season’s done.

Down in Jamaica
They got lots of pretty women
Steal your money
Then they break your heart

I was takin' a trip out to LA
Toolin' along in my Chevrolet
Tokin' on a number and diggin' on the radio

I was cutting the rug
Down at place called The Jug
With a girl named Linda Lou

I remember standin on the corner at midnight / Tryin to get my courage up

I was a little too tall / Could've used a few pounds / Tight pants points hardly reknown

I'll raise you...

He wants to dream like a young man
With the wisdom of an old man
He wants his home and security
He wants to live like a sailor at sea

Heart breaker, soul shaker
I've been told about you

Here I come again now, baby
Like a dog in heat
Tell it's me by the clamor now baby
I like to tear up the street,

Train roll on, on down the line,
Won't you please take me far away?
Now I feel the wind blow outside my door,
Means I'm, I'm leaving my woman at home.

Life is so strange when its changin', yes indeed
Well I've seen the hard times and the pressure's been on me
But I keep on workin' like the workin' man do
And I've got my act together, gonna walk all over you

Risk my soul, test my life
For my bread
Spend my time, lost in space
Am I dead?

Good one

Always liked this from The Fire Inside (song and album name) - 1991. Album has several good songs on it.

There's a hard moon risin' on the streets tonight
There's a reckless feeling in your heart
As you head out tonight

I bomb atomically, Socrates' philosophies and hypotheses
Can't define how I be dropping these mockeries
Lyrically perform armed robbery
Flee with the lottery, possibly they spotted me
Battle-scarred Shogun, explosion when my pen hits tremendous
Ultraviolet shine blind forensics
I inspect you through the future see millennium
Killa Beez sold fifty gold, sixty platinum
Shackling the masses with drastic rap tactics
Graphic displays melt the steel like blacksmiths
Black Wu jackets, Queen Beez ease the guns in
Rumble with patrolmen, tear gas laced the function
Heads by the score take flight incite a war
Chicks hit the floor, die hard fans demand more
Behold the bold soldier, control the globe slowly
Proceeds to blow, swinging swords like Shinobi
Stomp grounds and pound footprints in solid rock
Wu got it locked, performing live on your hottest block

I lit up from Reno
I was trailed by twenty hounds
Didn't get to sleep that night
Till the morning came around

In the timbers to Fennario, the wolves are running round,
The winter was so hard and cold, froze ten feet 'neath the ground.
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.

Please don't dominate the rap jack, if ya got nothin more to say....

and there are a shit load more.....
