Apex Legends - New Battle Royale from Respawn (Titanfall)

Lots of rumors were swirling the past couple of days about a new free to play battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe that will supposedly launch tomorrow. About an hour ago a bunch of popular streamers started tweeting that they got to play it this past week and they'll be streaming the game tomorrow.

I love the Titanfall universe so I'm getting pretty hyped about this. I don't usually enjoy battle royale games, but the addition of it being made by Respawn and in the Titanfall universe has me interested. Crossing my fingers that this will be awesome and help bring more players to a future Titanfall release.

I won with the medic girl. I like being able to deploy that healing drone, really useful.

I like it quite a bit. I miss the pilot movement from Titanfall, but the way the weapons feel is very similar. I REALLY like the ping system. When no one is talking in game chat and you match with randoms, it's so useful to just quickly communicate using RB. I need to play some more with other characters to get a feel for them, but I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would when I heard they removed wall-running and double-jumping.

Just played a match to see how it was.  I like the ping thing because I didn't have my headset because I thought it was a free for all and my squadmate and I ran around pinging stuff for each other after we landed, which worked pretty well.  I like the overall feel of the game but won't be particularly interested in it until we have every man for himself mode.

I wonder how long that'll be just due to some of the balance issues with each legend. Some would definitely need to be tweaked for it, particularly the support classes. I'd love to have just a solos queue though as some stacked teams can be really, really damn good. Got to the end last night and a team pulled off a double flank on us in the last circle/building, which was both really fun to try and counter and frustrating for sucking.

Seems like it should have some staying power though:

Still not sure about this one. I always roll in these type of games with a couple of my buddies, and they are already done with it. I tired to press them to see why, but it sounds like they just keep getting run over by people that had played for a ton of time. I like the guns and specialists for sure, but I hate the way you go through the load outs.

The gunplay and movement is pretty streamlined and very satisfying. The UI and action mapping is a bit clunky. Definitely a bit of a learning curve to figure out how to navigate the inventory, switch guns/attachments/grenades, use abilities. There are a ton of actions you need to get familiar with to feel like you are in control during firefights.

I was getting kills from the get go but also getting a little frustrated at times and feeling like I didn't know wtf I was doing. And I'm an extremely experienced PC FPS gamer, so for more casual players I could see it being a little daunting.

If you play on PC feel free to add me, not sure how much I'll end up playing. Kind of between that and BFV right now. username is ztejas13.

I've been playing video games since the fucking Atari.  Shooters were my jam all the way back to Quake/Tribes.  I thought I was pretty fucking good and had the stats to prove it.

But holy hell these kids playing today professionally are just insane.

Just finished watching the Apex Twitch tournament and this kid Dizzy was just nuts.  He kept running out of people to kill.  He didn't even need specific weapons.  He'd just pick up w/e the fuck he could find and wipe squads like it was a walk in the park.

Well, finally had some better luck the past couple of days and got some more wins. This game has really grown on me and I'm definitely having fun with it. I think my favorite character to play as so far is Lifeline, with Bloodhound coming in second. I need to get better with Wraith, I feel like she's pretty good too. I unlocked Caustic with my EA Access bonus credits, but now I wish I had unlocked Mirage.

Yeah. Partially because the good ones are making well into 6 figures a year. It's a profession. You're talking about guys that play 8-10 hours a day intensely and on top of it a lot of them take diet and exercise seriously as a part of it.

I got in a game two days ago with this kid that was probably 12ish and he proceeded to kill 21 people on his own with dual Wingman pistols and the other two of us got three kills each, heh.  He was using the robot character and jump grappling everywhere above and around us but he was even pinging specific spots for us to get good shot angles as he drew them out for us while he was still doing everything else.  I was actually impressed just how quickly he was processing all this information and relaying it verbally and with pings all at once while of course also fighting and destroying everyone around us.  Of course he then told us he was much better with another character (the female solider).  In a month or two this game is probably beyond my ability to even keep up reasonably as the skill level continues to increase and I've even won about 10 games and it's not even close how to how good some of these kids are right now.  I've never liked any other BR game but this one I have enjoyed so far.

what do we know about matchmaking? is it purely location based? skill based at all? "level" based (so you are getting smoked by people who are level 7 but just started vs you playing a little here and there?

Wingman is insane if you can hit your shots. evidently 100% accurate on the first shot when hipfired.

I am not that accurate.

It seems random to me as I see everything mixed up but who knows as my sample size is nothing like the number of games some play daily.  I personally don't think it appears to have skill based matchmaking although the pre-made teams with friends you see (or streamers) sometimes are crazy good.  I also had a guy on my team once with I think around 1700 kills only days after it came out and I just had to laugh out loud (maybe curse too heh as time is valuable) figuring out how much time he had to spare in general for life even if he was pretty good.  I'd guess I have played about 40 games total over two weeks here and there give or take ten or so either direction, mostly using Wraith.  My youngest says I am pretty good for "win ratio" but that's very misleading as the majority of wins I have been carried by superior players.  I've tried Wingman and am fine with the full upgrades but otherwise my aim stinks.  I'm pretty good with the Spitfire and R-301 medium and close range and that G something sniper gun long range and suck at most everything else especially shotguns.  Pretty sure I'll burn out as this kind of game normally isn't my thing (like story based much more) but so far it's been fun and I've had some free time at the right time too.  I am very curious how it stacks up against Fortnite in six months, the EA stock was taking a huge dive recently but this game has popped it back up, but now Anthem might drop it again as apparently it's early reviews are not so great (haven't tried yet, not really a looter shooter type very much).

anyone playing on PS4?

I'm on PS4 (HookEmTexas16)  We've been playing every night for the past few weeks and usually have an open spot on occasion. Won our 2nd match last night but normally come in 2nd-3rd, which is frustrating after humping all over the map and getting kills/attachments. Bloodhound,Lifeline,Mirage are my go to characters.

I haven't played this yet, still enjoying Fortnite, but I saw something yesterday that said Fortnite's revenue peaked in December and has fallen by 50% since then.  Apex must be killing their numbers.

I don't think I have seen a time since Apex launched that Fortnite has had more viewers on Twitch than Apex. It will be interesting to see if they can keep interest, but right now, it is eating Fortnites lunch. Cross play is the biggest thing it is missing right now.

I have fallen in love with the 301. I have started to just use a strategy that getting a good stock, barrel-stabilizer and extend mag is what I want for my primary. I use to ditch guns where I had “upgrades” for guns that I preferred. Having the extra attachments is just too big to ignore.

In other news, I got my first kill with a Mozambique last night. I am sure that the guy I killed was less than thrilled.

I started playing this today and I got two kills in like 8 rounds.

I did somehow end up on the winning team twice.

It’s starting to grow on me. Got my first win the other day and dropped 13 kills that game. It took awhile to adjust from my usual COD play style.

I’m having no luck in this game. I have been on some winning teams but it wasn’t because of me. Probably 8 kills in 20 games. I feel like I spend a lot of time getting equipped and then executing poorly when the action happens.

At least the lobby time is short.

It's a crapshoot. I played two games tonight and won both. The first one I dealt 0 damage and my teammates carried me. Second game our Mirage died almost immediately after dropping and decided to disconnect even though we got his banner and the respawn beacon was right next to us. I got a devotion with a turbocharger and a peacekeeper, and I went on to get 7 kills while my other teammate got 10. I know if I kept playing, I'd probably lose all the rest that I played, so I just quit while I was ahead tonight.

2 victories, 1 as the true kill leader and the other we had a legit squad, two of us had 6 kills while the Bangalore had 7.

I’ve won as bloodraven and Caustic, tend to use caustic regularly when I’m playing with friends cause we hold spots more.

I can have 5kills in a round and not even finish top 10 and then I’ve had a few rounds where I’ve been the only person in my squad and survived to the top 2... which always ends badly as it’s me vs 3.

Apparently my 13yo daughter is pretty legit at this game. She’s now won with every character and she’s had a couple of back to back champions and kill leaders and final kill at the same time...

Finally had a victory where I contributed with more than just reviving the fallen.  I still shoot for shit and need to work on that.  I'm having more fun dropping in a crowded spot and seeing whether we can survive than dropping along the perimeter and spending 15 minutes gearing up only to get third partied the first time we come across another group.

gshuler if you want to add me (at your own risk).

It’s got a lot to build from, others need to poach the ideas.

It’s hands down the best pinging system in the FPS world right now and it’s not even close.

The launch master system is also the best around as well. I love that you can have everyone stick together with such ease and those that wanna bail early or late can do so, also great for spotting other squads coming down near/with your squad.

I like battle royal games but I tend to get tired of them after a little while due to stagnation. I just started playing blackout since it’s free for April and I enjoy it, the menu system is a little different but doable.

My main problem with these games is the high amount of HP. Throw in 3 levels of armor and it’s just painful to get into firefights. Even firestorm for bfv gets tedious with such high HP.

My daughter loves apex more than I enjoy it but even she says it needs a new map soon.

I think that they needed to move a bit faster with character, gun and map releases. Map release could just be changing a few things up. It sounds funny saying that since the game just came out, but the characters and their specialties are what separates the game from the rest.

Honestly, I kind of grew tired of the bigger characters having higher hit boxes, and fixing me to play with just a few characters. That and some of the specialties and alts are just worthless.

They just put out an update this week that gave Gibraltar and Caustic (the two fat guys) an extra passive ability where they take 10% less damage. Also, Gibraltar's gun shield now absorbs more damage. That helps those guys out so they don't feel like such big targets that die quickly. And then last month or so they updated the hitboxes. That made Pathfinder a much more viable option.

I still play just about every day for 2 or 3 matches. My favorite is definitely Lifeline, but I can play with them all except for probably Caustic, I just don't find him enjoyable at all. They did just make his gas more potent, so maybe I need to give him another shot. Really though, you can win with any character. I almost exclusively play with randoms and I usually win at least once every couple of days, and usually I'm in the top 3 squads if I can make it through the first couple of minutes after landing.
