A FootballScoop study found the top 10 highest-paid defensive backs coaches earn north of $400,000, but not as much as the 10 highest-paid offensive line coaches.

Behold, the latest in a series examining the biggest salaries for position coaches across major college football. Information courtesy of the USA Today coaching salary database and based on publicly available contracts.

  Top 10 highest-paid DBs coaches -- 2018

1. Charlton Warren, Georgia — $600,000
2. Craig Naivar, Texas@ — $500,000
2. Chris Partridge, Michigan@ — $500,0000
2. Paul Rhoads, UCLA — $500,000
5. Maurice Linguist, Texas A&M — $450,000
5. Keith Hayward, Oregon* — $450,000
5. Anthony Poindexter, Purdue* — $450,000
8. Mike Reed, Clemson — $440,000
9. Roy Manning, Oklahoma — $425,000
10. Anthony Campanile, Michigan — $415,000

* – Also a co-defensive coordinator
@ – Also a special teams coordinator

Other notes:

— The emphasis of this exercise is to study position coaches, not coordinators. That said, it bears mentioning that South Carolina’s Travaris Robinson ($1.2 million) is technically the highest-paid defensive backs coach in the country. We’re trying to find the price point for coaches whose primary responsibility is to coach cornerbacks and safeties, not call plays.

— Yet again, Alabama and Ohio State are nowhere to be found. The Buckeyes actually led this list in 2018 with Alex Grinch’s $1.158 million salary, and new hires Jeff Hafley and Matt Barnes have yet to have their salaries revealed. Alabama defensive backs coach Karl Scott, on the other hand, remains employed but nowhere close to the top 10 at just — “just” — $350,000 a year. No one coaching football for a living at the Power 5 level is underpaid, but if they were, Scott would have to be among the most underpaid coaches in the sport.

— Three new hires made the list in Georgia’s Charlton Warren, Michigan’s Anthony Campanile and Oklahoma’s Roy Manning.

— Oklahoma announced Manning’s salary on Jan. 30, bumping Michigan State’s Paul Haynes and LSU’s Corey Raymond from the list, who each made $410,000. Actually, that’s not true. Haynes made $410,002.

As part of our ongoing series, FootballScoop has examined the 10 highest-paid special teams coordinators in college football. All information is based on publicly available information, primarily from the USA Today salary database.

10 Highest Paid Special Teams Coaches -- 2018

1. Craig Naivar, Texas — $500,000
1. Chris Partridge, Michigan — $500,000
3. Danny Pearman, Clemson — $480,000
4. Jovan Dewitt, Nebraska — $475,000
4. Coleman Hutzler, South Carolina — $475,000
6. James Shibest, Virginia Tech — $445,000
7. Jay Boulware, Oklahoma — $435,000
8. Jeff Banks, Alabama — $434,000
9. Shawn Slocum, Arizona State — $420,000
10. Andy Hill, Missouri — $418,000

Other notes:

— Almost every special teams coordinator also has positional responsibilities. Two who do not? Slocum and Hill. Both handle just special teams while serving as their respective team’s associate head coach.

— Positional responsibilities were evenly split amongst the remaining eight. Tight ends (Perman, Shibest, Banks) was the most popular position — and we’d bet is the most common across the entire sport — but safeties (Naivar, Partridge) and linebackers (Dewitt, Hutzler) also had multiple entrants. Boulware also coaches Oklahoma’s running backs.

Minnesota coach PJ Fleck gets contract extended through 2026

Nov 5, 2019

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Undefeated and 13th-ranked Minnesota has agreed with coach P.J. Fleck on a contract extension through the 2026 season, including an annual raise of more than 25% from his current salary and an eight-figure buyout for the first year to cover the university if he were to leave.

Fleck signed his new deal on Tuesday afternoon, delaying his regular weekly news conference by a half-hour. The contract, which is pending final approval by the Board of Regents, will pay Fleck $4.6 million in 2020 with a $50,000 raise scheduled for each season thereafter.

His prior deal from 2017, when he was hired away from Western Michigan, had him making $3.6 million this year. The original contract also called for a $1 million payment to Minnesota per remaining season on the deal if Fleck were to skip out, but now it would cost him $10 million to do so anytime before Dec. 31, 2020. Fleck did his best to put to rest any concern about him using the Gophers as a steppingstone to a more prominent program.

"Minor tweak" to Naivar's contract.  (Guessing a little extra 2019 money for his co-defensive coordinator title...)

Welp, I see a way for the Texas athletic department to save about $3,000,000 and improve the football team at the same time.

that article sucks, nothing about guarantees...

Huh??  Guess you didn't scroll down far enough @alphahorn,

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/texas-sports-nation/college/article/A-closer-look-at-Texas-coach-Tom-Herman-s-13895223.php

From article lots of detail:

The new deal brings Herman's total guaranteed compensation over the next five seasons (2019-2023) to $27.75 million. The base payments are somewhat unique in that Herman himself will receive an annual base salary of $3.5 million while his limited liability corporation, 1-0 Culture LLC, is due escalating payments beginning at $2.25 million in fiscal year 2019 and topping out at $3.25 million in fiscal year 2023.

The amended contract also includes two retention payments of $1 million.

• Corporate payments to 1-0 Culture LLC:

FY 2019: $2,250,000
FY 2020: $2,500,000
FY 2021: $2,750,000
FY 2022: $3,000,000
FY 2023: $3,250,000

• Total base salary:

FY 2019: $5,750,000
FY 2020: $6,000,000
FY 2021: $6,250,000
FY 2022: $6,500,000
FY 2023: $6,750,000

Herman can also earn up to $500,000 in bonuses if certain incentives are met, the juiciest of which is a $250,000 payment for winning the College Football Playoff championship game. Texas has missed the CFP every year since its inception in 2014 and has not played for a national title since the 2009 season.

• Incentives:

Team wins Big 12 championship game: $100,000

Team wins College Football Playoff championship game: $250,000
Team academic performance incentive: N/A
National coach of the year: $100,000
Big 12 coach of the year: $50,000

Herman was the Big 12's top earner and the nation's ninth-highest paid head coach last season, per USA Today's salaries database.

A team manager for the South Carolina football team has lost his job after allegedly fighting a man dressed up as a fired Will Muschamp on Halloween.

Per the Post and Courier, Aubrey Walker was let go following his arrest Halloween night on charges of public disorderly conduct in a crosswalk in an entertainment district. Walker was allegedly upset with the costume of the man he fought, which included Muschamp’s gameday attire and a buyout check.

From the Post and Courier:

The Post and Courier obtained a photo of the costume. The man is dressed in Muschamp’s game-day attire, wearing all-black clothing with a headset and eyeglasses. He’s holding a giant check.

The check is in the amount of $18 million with “Buyout” written in the memo space (Muschamp’s buyout would be around $18.75 million if he were to be fired on Dec. 31). It is made out to “Will Muschamp” and signed by “Every Gamecock Fan.”

Tim Beck went from $790k per year at Texas, to $700k per year at NC State.... Happy for Coach Beck finding a decent gig.

"Athletics spokesman Fred Demarest said Beck is set to make $700,000 annually for two years with the Wolfpack."

Report: Rutgers landed offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson with a record breaking deal.

https://footballscoop.com/news/report-rutgers-landed-offensive-coordinator-sean-gleeson-with-a-record-breaking-deal/

Gleeson signed a three-year deal in Piscataway that makes him the highest paid assistant coach in program history, according to NJ.com.  The report shares that Gleeson will make a $805,000 in his first season (a program record), followed by $855,000 in 2021 and $905,000.

For some perspective – Jim McNulty, who served as offensive coordinator on Chris Ash’s staff last season, made $625,000.

...so is piggy not gonna put safeties on the field or will they just do whatever they like? I mean, either way it's not like they will make much of a difference.

Odom coached safeties for 3yrs at Mizzu, so maybe double duty as DC and safeties coach??

Damn. He earned it I guess - even if his success can be attributed to hiring good coordinators. If he can do something similar with his new hires, then he’s definitely worth the money to LSU. If not, well, it’s not like roads need repairing there anyway.

Staff changes actually saves Nebraska money for 2020 season...

"Coaching salaries typically move in one direction — up — but Nebraska will pay Scott Frost’s staff less in 2020 than it did in 2019.  Which couldn’t necessarily come as a surprise after a season that began in the AP Top 25 ended at 5-7."

The Group of Five has their first million dollar assistant

Shannon, who was in the mix for a few head coaching jobs again this off season, also got a one-time retention bonus of $300k on February 6th.
