Trump brought a 10 year old cancer survivor who smiled, waved, and according to the photo above stayed awake.  We know he wants $5 billion for a wall ASAP and he's willing to shut down the government to get it.  But in his speech he also proposed $500 million in new cancer research over the next ten years.

I thought at the time he mis-spoke.  Surely curing cancer, especially in children, merits a bigger number.  I thought maybe he was supposed to say $500 billion over the next ten years.  I checked the transcript and googled a bit to see if he misspoke.  He did not.  He brought that little girl to the speech and then proposed $50 million per year to help her, in a country of 325 million people.

I am no fan of Trump but a call to action to spend $50 billion per year to eliminate childhood cancer would have impressed me.  That is an audacious goal I could get behind.  A gift to humanity like antibiotics and vaccinations.  That's still around $150 per person per year, less than fifty cents per day per person.  Fifty million per year seems like window dressing, a token payment for a nation that could do more.

He's not calling for anything real.  It's all theater.  There is no plan to put any additional money, $50 billion or $5 for cancer research.  There's also no plan to build a wall, that's already being built, that Mexico's paying for, that's actually fence, that's today steel slats etc.  Whatever he says is just words off a teleprompter.  He's not doing jack shit but executive time on the shitter and tweeting about what he hears on Fox News

Well you see, we can't afford more than that, because we cut government revenues first and Paul Ryan lost his ability to cut SS/Medicare/food stamps before he got ushered out of Congress.  Not in the budget, bro.  Trump's travel to Mar-a-Lago and the military-industrial complex comes first.  Think of the poor defense contractors who might not get paid if we went all in on curing cancer first.

I know I've had way more family members killed by the immigrant hordes of MS-13 gangs than cancer.

The girl was a prop, nothing more, to produce the most guaranteed of all applause lines.

Seeing the Surly Trump strokers continue to defend and applaud him is an easy way to poll that he's still got an unwavering 35% of voter support.

82% of Independent viewers approved his speech last night.  Hell, 30% of Democrat viewers approved of it.  If the Democrats nominate anyone other than Biden in 2020 Trump wins easily.

1) i thought it was a decent speech too, but that doesn't mean i'm going to vote for him.

2) these "independent" voters intrigue me.  if you've ever listened to washington journal, you've noticed that 95% of the "independent" callers are republicans that either don't want to call in on that line, or are afraid of being called a republican.

His pardon deal will make you out to be a liar.

Shocking as that may seem to a Trumpkin.

He read off a teleprompter without shitting his pants, saying the n word or calling Pelosi an ugly cunt.

Such low standards we have for Trump.

Who cares if 82% of indies and 30% of Democrats approved of him reading prepared remarks like a professional adult?  People already forgot he spoke last night.

Trump's presidency is not his once a year SOTU speech but his 18 tweets a day and his MAGA rallies.

When the choice for the Dems is someone like Abrams voicing concerns protecting illegals and harping on alleged voter suppression that don’t register on the list of most important national issues for most people, the GOP will win in 2020. No bullshit, I was a Gary Johnson voter in 2016. I will be voting GOP 2020 no matter what. The stakes are that high. I was nervous after the midterm Dem victories. Not as much now. Abrams’ performance was the best thing to happen to the Party so far this year.

They approved of a speech he didn't write and didn't want to read.  Let's see how many rallies are to follow with him being the cunt he is.

A CNN poll conducted by ssrs following President Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday night found that 59% of viewers had a very positive reaction to the speech, 17% had a somewhat positive reaction and 23% had a negative reaction. CNN political director David Chalian presents.

There is something to this. There is a palpable relief in seeing him not shit the bed or act like a wannabe tyrant.  He has pushed the bar so low that a middling speech peppered with points that should be alarming "wasn't that bad".  And "wasn't that bad" is the new "good" after two years of "utter shit show".

Unfortunately, no one challenged his portrayal of his Presidency and the State of the Union, so those claims get to stick for anyone not paying attention to the details over the past two years.

One of things I loved as a Republican from the speech which will make terrific attack ads was when Trump said “America will never become a socialist country” and the Democrats sitting on their hands and scowling.

Why? Why did you love it? Do you think there is a real chance that the United States of America will actually flip to socialism? Everyone getting the same equal share? You don't, because any sane person knows that won't happen.

I assume that you liked the remark as an attack on the crazy idea that the richest and most developed country on the planet should make sure that everyone has access to healthcare and education. Why are you against this? Do you like paying higher prices for medicine than people in other countries?

Do you like the other socialist parts of our government? When is the last time you price shopped an army or navy? How much does your private police force cost you? Do you exclusively drive on private roads? Do you plan on not taking social security and Medicare in a few years?

The Democrats sat on their hands because they knew it was a ridiculously pointless claim. You and the Republicans would have applauded if he said the United States will never change our name to Stankonia. Look at those dumb libs because they didn't clap they are going to change our name.

Italy declared war on France and Britain on the evening of 10 June, to take effect just after midnight. The two sides exchanged air raids on the first day of war, but little transpired on the Alpine front, since France and Italy had defensive strategies. There was some skirmishing between patrols and the French forts of the Ligne Alpine exchanged fire with their Italian counterparts of the Vallo Alpino. On 17 June, France announced that it would seek an armistice with Germany. On 21 June, with a Franco-German armistice about to be signed, the Italians launched a general offensive along the Alpine front, the main attack coming in the northern sector and a secondary advance along the coast. The Italians penetrated a few miles into French territory against strong resistance but stalled before its primary objectives could be attained, the coastal town of Menton being the most significant conquest.

accomplish nothing and declare victory. it's uncanny.

The Mussolini/Trump comparison is the best I’ve seen but it still falls short because Trump is so unbelievably stupid.

Some Mussolini highlights

“January 3, 1925 Mussolini called his opponent's bluff. He made a speech in which he said 'I and I alone assume the political, moral and historical responsibility for all that has happened'. His opponents did nothing. Mussolini then created a dictatorship in Italy. Between 1926 and 1929 the Fascist party was purged. Meanwhile in October 1926 all opposition parties were banned. The Fascists also gained control of the press by persuading newspaper owners to sack anti-Fascist editors and replace them with friendly ones.”

http://www.localhistories.org/fascist.html

Excerpt from Mussolini speech February 23, 1941

“Let me say now that what is occurring in the United States is one of the most colossal mystifications in all history. Illusion and lying are the basis of American interventionism-illusion that the United States is still a democracy, when instead it is a political and financial oligarchy dominated by Jews, through a personal form of dictatorship. The lie is that the Axis powers, after they finish Great Britain, want to attack America.

Neither in Rome nor Berlin are such fantastic plans as this prepared. These projects could not be made by those who have an inclination for the madhouse. Though we certainly are totalitarian and will always be so, we have our feet on hard ground. Americans who will read what I say should be calm and not believe in the existence of a big bad wolf who wants to devour them.

In all cases it is more likely that the United States, before it is attacked by Axis soldiers, will be attacked by the not well known but very warlike inhabitants of the planet Mars, who will descend from the stratosphere in unimaginable flying fortresses.

Rome comrades! Through you I want to speak to the Italian people, to the authentic, real, great Italian people, who fight with the courage of lions on land, sea and air fronts; people who early in the morning are up to go to work in fields, factories and offices; people who do not permit themselves luxuries, not even innocent ones.

They absolutely must not be confused or contaminated by the minority or well-known poltroons, anti-social individuals and complainers, who grumble about rations and regret their suspended comforts, or by snakes, the remains of the Masonic lodges, whom we will crush without difficulties when and how we want.

The Italian people, the Fascist people deserve and will have victory. The hardships, suffering and sacrifices that are faced with exemplary courage and dignity by the Italian people will have their day of compensation when all the enemy forces are crushed on the battlefields by the heroism of our soldiers and a triple, immense cry will cross the mountains and oceans like lightning and light new hopes and give new certainties to spirit multitudes: Victory, Italy, peace with justice among peoples!”

So either trump is good that he's secretly killing journalists and making them more pro trump, or he's so stupid that the media can't pinpoint how he won 2016.

Mussolini wanted to make Rome great again with an agrarian economy. Couldn't even beat Greeks. What a dumbass. I don't why I made this paragraph, but really, Mussolini was incompetent and his war effort and people suffered for it.

Mussolini was considered a reckless blowhard when he came to power but the elites thought high office would mature him...it didn’t.  Sound familiar?

If tyrants need to be killed then they should go the way of Mussolini.

I'm not sure why the CR is even open anymore until 2021. @EMAWesome has already called it and everyone better get their asses ready to keep winning. We're looking at you El Paso and North Korea. You bastards have no idea how lucky you are to have the most successful president of all time (or at least since George Washington if you ask Fallwell) protecting the will of God from Pennsylvania Ave.

Oh and thankfully @Iconoclast Texan is back on the GOP train. You had us all convinced you were wavering.  I mean you telling us you're voting or the GOP in 2020 is a shocking development that nobody could've predicted.
