Barry: new HBO show

I enjoyed Sally's mental breakdown about being jealous of Barry-- didn't buy her taking an "artistic stand" and not doing the huge Aaron Sorkin thing. Her character would give her ovaries to do that show so it didn't seem consistent to me. Also hilarious satire on sexism/tall-men privilege and failing upwards versus self-absorbed women who want it more. "I'm putting my art out there and getting the rewards I deserve!" was lol.

Yeah, that was a nice little dig at Oprah's "The Secret".  Let me just put it out there unto the universe so that I may be showered and adorned with things that aren't really due to my work or talent.  She has to know on some level she's marginally talented, has a decent but not great work ethic, and is attractive but not in a Hollywood-sense.  Barry isn't being skipped ahead because of his height or his talent or his years of dedication to the craft.  They know that part, what they don't know is that he's exactly what a contract killer is---he's in the right place at the right time, not fitting in and not standing out.  Barry is in that world because of what he said to a mid-level acting coach, in front of a mid-level wanna-be actress, and gets in rooms because enough people think his backstory is interesting because the only people that can refute his story are dead or on the run.  In some ways, it's a commentary on how ludicrous the whole industry is.  Reminds me of Jonah Hill roasting Bill Heder years ago when he left SNL for a mobile phone ad campaign.

Not my man Bill! He held out for that "fuck you, T-Mobile money!"

The summary of this is a discussion of Barry with Bill Hader hosted by John Mulaney. While there is some of that, it’s also just a great, funny (hour and a half) laugh fest between the two of them (who are obviously massive friends/fans of each other), making each other laugh, recalling old SNL stories, taking/riffing on audience questions and also with some Barry talk sprinkled in throughout.

If you’re a fan of Bill Hader and/or John Mulaney (and, if not, what the fuck is wrong with you?), you will enjoy. We just watched the whole thing and were wanting more. Love stuff like this (podcasts, sit downs like this, etc) where two comedians sit around and shoot the shit.

the whole breakdown hit close to home.

but yeah, no way she turns it down. her reel has her playing a background alien.

also gersh with the packaging joke on “prison teens”.  gersh isn’t really involved, but the packaging drama is currently fucking up this entire business.

You guys are like Fleetwood Mac. You break up, you get back together again, and then you go out and make a great album like "The Best of Fleetwood Mac".

LOL that was great.

It's also great how this show dangles tropes in front of us and then brushes them aside, e.g. Barry casually taking out Esther and his sharp shooter protege.

(And yeah speaking of Esther, Fuches' line about Esther being a "woman's name" was the line of the night)

Also loved Hank on the phone with customer service trying to order his "heroin table."

Aw man, I liked that Chechin sharpshooter

Barry taking out all of those guys was unrealistic. I was kind of hoping that guy was going to take Barry out with a single shot to the head. Sharpshooter feels bad and Season 2 ends; then see what develops season 3.

Kill off Barry in a show called Barry? Bold strategy.

Season 3, titled Barry is Dead

Mostly kidding but they could have just ended the show there. Maybe do a spinoff.

Hank befriends Fuches. Sharpshooter gets pissed off at Hank and a new revilary begins. Fonze finds out Fuches connections and teams up with sharpshooter. Fonze is now an asshole. Sally goes into porn.

I honestly don't believe the fast forwarding B.S.  Even if you don't particularly care for her, you have no idea when she could say something completely pivitol that alters the course of the show.  But feel free to watch only 20 minutes out of 25 minutes of a great show because you're not in love with one of the characters.

There's been plenty of shows where I dislike certain characters.  I've never once fast forwarded through their scenes because I want to see the show as it was intended.

Amazon has a ten second button. Just hit it a few times. It's not difficult.

I'm not disputing that it's not possible to fast forward through a scene, I'm saying you're either full of shit or an idiot to do so.

Man, I hated Samwell Tarly's character on Game of Thrones.  Fast forwarded through all his scenes.  I'm sure it made the show better.

I fast forwarded through a lot of the northern scenes when jon snow was up there earlier in the seasons when I was binging to catch up back in 2015.

To each their own. I don't and likely won't fast forward through Sally's scenes, but I get the desire. It's cringe-worthy and I've felt that way about a lot of characters in shows and done the 10 second jump a couple of times.

I find the concept of fast forwarding through a show you enjoy totally fucking bizarre.

You might enjoy a show but find some really parts excruciating to sit through and the cringe worthiness is just too much to bear. You ever do that in real life? I have moments like that often where I just have to bow out of conversations or situations because I am hypersensitive to the cheese and cringe and it bothers me.

Again, I don't FF. I am just saying I get the impulse.

Sally is a character that is not enjoyable. I don't enjoy the scenes she's in and she bothers me a lot. That said, she's a great character and the the show does a good job of creating, writing and executing a character that is so unenjoyable.

Yeah, the thought has never even occurred to me.

i love a good mad men rewatch (fast-forwarding through all non-office/mostly betty scenes) or a good breaking bad rewatch (with no skyler or walt jr scenes) but can't imagine fast forwarding through a first run show that i enjoy.  this isn't a one-on-one date on the bachelorette.

I've been known to fast forward through the Melfi and AJ scenes during a Sopranos rewatch.

Barry taking out the sharpshooter was the perfect callback to the episode when he was training him.  He gave him the whole speech about not hesitating for a second when the bullets are flying....

Barry busts open the door; sharpshooter sees it's Barry and hesitates.... Barry puts one in his head without hesitating for a second.

Sharpshooter should have taken Barry's advice. :)

And yeah - I don't get fast forwarding the Sally scenes.  Those scenes are as important as the scenes with Hank or Fuches.  Sally is a reflection of Barry in the same way the Fuches is.

sally, while annoying, is also a fantastically written character.

it takes skill to build a character (almost always a woman) that possesses that type of contrast between self-worth (has too little) and self-confidence (has too much).  she's an actress, so the failure and insecurity is built right in.  and as my actor friends tell me, "it's not like, hey, i didn't like your script, it's not what we're looking for...it's you.  we did not like you.  you are not right for this.  someone else is better than you for the exact same role."

to see her wrestle with that career choice, with her history of being knocked around and told she's worthless by someone who's supposed to love her - is gut-wrenching but weirdly inspiring at the same time.  and i don't know much from sarah goldberg, but she should be up for an emmy for this season.

when she asked "how was the audition" but then clearly had no interest in hearing the answer.  "i didn't really want to know, just thought it was polite to ask" or whatever - was fucking perfect.  she lives in a superficial world, and wants so badly to be part of it, and can't fucking control her emotions when it seems to come easier to others (like barry's audition).  this town is all about everyone being unhappy, and wanting what the other person got that you should've gotten.

like he said in la story.  "i was deeply unhappy, but i didn't know because i was too busy being happy all the time".

I absolutely hate Sally as a person, but I love that character. I actively root against her and love seeing her deal with failure. Reminds me of this one chick I knew in college who went off to Hollywood to become an actress and spent years trying with her biggest role being a part of an Asylum film where she was "girl in boat" who loses her top for 3 seconds of screen time. So many people try to make it but just can't, and never have the self awareness to realize they might be part of the problem.
