I absolutely agree.  He would certainly make a good pick for Sec. of Veterans Affairs.  I was merely positing the question, that if his campaign doesn't land him in the White House, what are other options for him at a relatively young political age?  Cabinet level perhaps.  Other thoughts?

Just my opinion but I think he will need to get a spot with the next administration to continue his political career. Spend some time with HUD and then return to Texas for the Governors race. He will need a good landing spot to avoid the perennial loser label.

I'm pretty surprised by how this is going for him.  in hindsight (so far) it's not hard to see but it wasn't that way on the front end.

I was 100% convinced that his El Paso -> Houston -> Austin speech day was going to culminate in 40k+ people on Congress ready to carry him off on their shoulders.

I was in the Houston crowd, which was easily 9k+.

When I saw the anemic Austin crowd on the livestream I was shocked.

I still think he's got an extremely high ceiling, but man...

HUD, really?  I could certainly see Veterans Affairs, Sec. of Labor, perhaps even Drug Czar (finally somebody with some pragmatic suggestions in that role)...but I honestly would question HUD as the son-in-law of a real estate profiteer who has funded a great deal of Beto's career would look to outside world.  He doesn't talk enough about his work for Veterans which is just beyond me since all bullshit aside, that's something he has done a great deal to change for the better.

I was just throwing HUD out there, mainly based on the idea that "HUD is the the fat chick of cabinet assignments."

Yeah, that's true.  But that it's ahead of Transportation and Energy is fucking beyond me.  I know it's set by federal law/constitutional amendment, but in 2019 the person who visits federal housing projects is ahead of our nuclear/hydrocarbon/renewable programs is laughable.  In a perfect world though, Sec. Perry would be visiting the Robert Taylor homes while truly smart people would be discussing our energy portfolio for the next 100 years.

He’s a privileged white male who married into a white billionaire family.  And he’s not even a socialist. He’s fucked in the modern left’s victim olympics.
As a white male who grew up in a Christian household, we have a stranglehold on the all-time gold medal count of the "victim Olympics". Its fucking embarrassing

Good luck claiming victim status.

At some point you have to realize potential to have ever had potential. I think we’re seeing that Beto was only popular because Cruz isn’t. Everyone in the country wanted Cruz gone and Beto was the benefactor of that sentiment. Nobody should be shocked that a campaign based around “I’m a privileged asshole and I’m sorry for it” doesn’t get you far in a presidential election. Why doesn’t the guy ever talk about his accomplishments? Does he have any or is he using the excuse of running for office as a way to tell his father in law that he needs money to pay the electric bill this month?  It’s like he runs for office so he doesn’t have to get a real job, not so he can win or implement an idea or two.

He needs to stop fucking apologizing. It's one thing to be generally positive and stay on message but his "I'm not going to attack Cruz" thing lost him the Senate race and the "aw shucks I'm just happy to be here" crap is going to tank his POTUS bid before it even starts. Grow some balls. Buttigieg is a good example of how to attack while staying mostly positive. Warren is a good example of how ALL of these candidates should be going after Trump.

Mayor Pete is probably the best, least awkward, candidate in the field.  Beto is so fucking smarmy he can't say anything without it coming out as "I'm better than you because my mommy said so.  I deserve this."  Hillary just ran on deserving the presidency and it pissed off a lot of women I know that probably would ave voted for her otherwise.  My ex, for example, campaigned for obama in Missouri but she couldn't justify voting for Hillary because all of the sudden her vote was predetermined to go to a candidate becasue she was a woman?  Voting for Trump was my ex saying "my body, my choice" but with a vote.  I think Beto will illicit the same response in that he just seems like an entitled baby trying to be popular when he really isn't.

Also, I don't think that the country as a whole can wrap their heads around a texas politician being anything but a dickbag republican.  We won't see a president from Texas for a long time since Bush was so hated.  Cruz and Coryn are doing their best to make sure national politicians from Texas look like assholes.  Strategically, a popular dem from texas is a great long term play to flip the state.  But the voters don't play the long game.

This is definitely true. Policy aside, he's got the best combination of charisma, polish, the right demeanor, and quick wit. As of right now I think he's the candidate that would do the best in a back and forth with Trump. I'm not sure how important that ultimately is relative to ability to energize the base, policy, etc. But I'm sure that you're right in this statement.

Yep...  My quick and dirty thoughts on the players:

Biden - Will spar with trump but gaffe himself to death while trump's voters don't care what trump says.

Warren - Will spar but will come off as bitchy and turn people off.

Pete - positive attitude, smart, rooted in pretty good morals and doesn't have any bad policy history that I can see

Bernie - Will come off as always on the defensive when sparing with trump and will give up on it.  While Trump is famous for "Wrong!" that was short and to the point.  Bernie would say something like "but but but but, you're not understanding... I have a record of...."  his responses are way to old man drawn out.

Booker - doesn't even have a chance to make it to this point.

Harris - She'll be good going at Trump, but she has the ability to look like a bitch too.  She'll be good but wouldn't get more than one chance to recover from a gaffe because of her ability to look like a bitch when she gets aggressive.

And our namesake of this thread is going to look like a nerdy chump next to Trump unless he finds a spine in the next year.

I actually disagree on a couple though. I don't think Warren will come off as bitchy, she's different than Hillary. I worry about her constantly getting baited into conversations where Trump is playing offense and she is playing defense, like what happened with the Pocahontas thing. There is no playing defense against Trump - our candidate needs to be able to redirect Trump's attacks and take the ball themselves.

And I think Harris would do great against Trump. She would rip him to shreds in a way where even the hicks who hated Hillary "just because" would have to be like damn, that's a bad ass chick. I think she'd eviscerate him. I'm more concerned about the "coastal liberal" thing than her presence.

I should have used whiny with Warren.  She'll get on the defensive and in trying to defend herself she'll sound whiny.  A lot like Bernie, which is why she draws some comps to Bernie.  She'll absolutely get baited because that's exactly what she did with the native american shit.  Then in a stroke of strategic brilliance she took a DNA test and releases it proudly like she is full blown native american.  Whoever is giving her tips needs to be fired. If she did that on her own she should bow out gracefully now because it will get ugly down the road when the kid gloves come off.

I think Harris is probably the best equipped to handle trump but she will come off as a woman scorned and that isn't a good look.  You can't just be on a war path the whole campaign and have people who want cordial politics be attracted to you.  She also has only looked great in very scripted settings.  We haven't really seen her off the cuff.

I literally forgot about Beto which is exactly the campaign he is running.  Forgettable.  He is one loud scream away from a howard dean-like fall from grace.  It would be fun to speculate on what his next career will be.  Probably ends up as a city councilman who always talks about how he almost made the big time.

Buttigieg shoplifted a lot of Beto’s mojo because he’s more adorable and articulate.

I fear they are going to cancel each other out even though they are two of the more appealing candidates.

I want Pete as president, but I think both of them need to be at least in a D cabinet somehow.  Beto's charisma is needed regardless.

It's cool he and the others want to go for it, but it's a waste of time and money.

I understand this, but his presence makes the primary race and the entire dialogue better.  Same with Buttigieg, even if they don't win.

I agree. I don't fault him or any of them for trying. I applaud the widening of the field. It's the same for Bernie.

But, the cynical political junkie says F Quests and driving the conversation ;win and then you can make your point. TWO DOZEN?! WTAF?!

Oh well. Get on out there and ride. Go out guns a blazing. Ojeda is on the same quixotic journey.

A colossal waste of political capital.

I’m 15 minutes behind but Beto sounds a lot better. If he’s studied up and can get comfortable and can perform in the debates he could rebound.

I still think Biden needs to stumble.

how come many CR Surly members are much more knowledgeable on a variety of topics than Beto? He has nothing else to do but study issues. He's lazy and uninterested. It's all about a superficial image and semi-memorable sentences. After the speech, which is a Chinese buffet, you are still hungry.

Surly is the ultimate think tank. Pick a topic and we've got at least a dozen pages of pros vs cons, plus some shit throwing and trolling. Get Beto on the Surlyhorn!

after watching several of his TX Facebook speeches, I am certain his staff was reading this place.

He killed it tonight.

I can’t wait for the debates. All the town halls and retail politicking he’s been doing clearly paid off - he kicked ass and had specific policy points and personal stories to back them up.

I think anyone writing him off or any of the top 7-10 candidates off or already anointing Biden are just playing pundit at this point.

Her climb to the top from her personal #meetoofu campaign will play prominently as well. Especially coming from ground zero, California.

Definitely a strong showing and I had the same though as Bama WRT his preparation by doing tons of small gigs and staying off TV for a long time. Get seasoned, get ready, take the same questions 200 times to work up good answers and ideas. It's like staying in college another year before going to the draft.

He moves his hands so much, he should learn ASL and just be his own signer.
