Late Night Political Talk Shows

RPM

No, they would be needling his doings in a general Washington D.C. joke like way.  They would not go after him personally.  Go back and watch Leno and Carson.  They made fun of every president but they did it in a way where you could not tell their personal political feelings.  None of the late night hosts today even make the slightest effort at all to do this and anyone that thinks different is either blindly partisan or an absolute idiot.

What do you think it is that’s different now? Hint: Dotard.

I suppose this deserves another mention. On January 12, 1992, Carson was joking about Gennifer Flowers. He said she'd lost her job but it was okay because she'd already found a new one "as Donald Trump's backup mistress...in case Marla Maples is unable to fulfill her duties."

It's the evolution of the genre. I'd say shows like the Daily Show kicked it into overdrive. Hell, the Daily Show with John Stewart was where I got most of my news back in the day. Throw in the fact that the current President presents an almost daily hourly source of material it's only going to continue. I consider myself to be conservative and I can't get enough of what the late night shows are putting out. Seth Meyers, Colbert, John Oliver, SNL, you name it they've struck pay dirt.

Now back to the thread........

Or maybe you are just hypersensitive.

slightly off topic but I love Jon Batiste.  I enjoy his banter with Colbert, but also he's phenomenal.  There are often times when he just fills in musically or adds to the improvisation.  There was something really funny a while back with an actor singing some obscure song that he just picked up, couldn't find it but here's him doing some stuff like that.  He's a great musician and is worth listening to not on the show.

or here's him backing up Colbert singing with Anna Kendrick

Best band on late night. It was relatively recently that they had Jon start participating in the monologue with little exclamations when Stephen says something, and little piano accents when Stephen is doing pantomime or some physical act. I'm not exactly sure when it started, maybe last fall. I think he does a great job at it, it's very tasteful and not overstated at all. I think it would be easy to get carried away but he consistently keeps it cool.

If I ever met Jon Batiste, I'd ask him what he, as a jazz musician, thinks of Stephen's improvisational skills. Improvisation in comedy, like in music, requires listening and reacting, thinking on your feet. I wonder when he first noticed they had similar skill sets, just in different art forms.

Also, I wish they would post all the music performed during the commercial breaks on YouTube. The main reason I'd ever want to attend a taping of the show would be to hear the music during the commercial breaks.

The difference being that none of the past Presidents during those time periods were complete and utter pieces of shit, as politicians, and as human beings.  Past Presidents warranted respect of varying degrees, including respectful ribbing from late night talk show hosts.  Trump warrants none whatsoever.  Anyone who disagrees is either an idiot or a bootlicking partisan hack.

If people don’t think late night tv didn’t eviscerate democrats then you either weren’t alive during the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal or weren’t paying attention or are being dishonest.

“Wholesome” Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” absolutely savaged Clinton nightly and he was particularly vicious and disgustingly misogynistic towards Monica.

John Oliver actually did a bit on it a few weeks ago.

When presidents lie, say dumb shit, act like pieces of shit, get linked with porn stars, say some more dumber shit, surround themselves with gigantic morons who say dumb shit, and generally run around like they should be traveling with the Barnum and Bailey Circus, guess what?

COMEDIANS ARE GOING TO USE YOU FOR MATERIAL AND LAUGHS!

Everyone tries to work smart not hard. Late night talk show hosts are going after the low hanging fruit.

And there must be some merit in it - their ratings seem to be doing okay.

You’re doing that victim thingy.

Who does have the best ratings of all the late night shows anyway?

No, she's pointing out the absurdity of the notion that late night talk show hosts only pick on conservative presidents and providing an example to back it up.

If what shoe was on which foot? The hell are you talking about?

You called her a "victim" for pointing out that late night talk show hosts also pick on Democratic presidents. I found it absurd that you called her a "victim" for having that opinion. It seems pretty cut and dry.

Maybe I need to put your hat on my head.

Saw Jim Jefferies show for the first time last night while clicking on Comedy Channel to find an Office episode. Enjoyed it.

Went to Africa to talk to a group that tracks down poachers. Women, who would normally not have a great life, are trained to be part of the group.

Jim Jefferies is a real surprise. I've always enjoyed his comedy, but I had no idea he was so good at interviews. I called the Jim Jefferies Show Aphrodisiac Hot Line he was talking about last night (833-454-6533). Good stuff.

Seth Meyers will have a 90 minute show Thursday. There's just too much stuff happening that day to fit in a regular show. Should be good.

He should've omitted the "Game of Jones" segment. (Watching Game of Thrones with Leslie Jones.) That was pretty lame. Keep it an hour long show, axe the Amy Sedaris interview and go right to Pete Buttigieg after A Closer Look.

All of these shows are terrible and not funny. Late night comedy used to be good about a decade ago when it wasn’t 100% political and so biased.
John Oliver is close to being decent (he has his moments) but even he has turned Comedy Central with so much of his content being the democrat party line lately.

Mayor Pete, the avocado toast of the Democratic Party. Get you a slice in 2020.

Full disclosure: I'm for Mayor Pete. I think he has substance.

Not saying that Fallon doesn't. Also not saying Fallon is a raging alcoholic.

That's a really dumb fucking statement.  The two are intertwined and not separable. "Political humor"  is humor that references politics.

Well, it used to be that we had a president who wasn't such a blatant piece of human shit.

It used to be that the Republican party had some decency.

It used to be that the public had their head out of their ass. Not saying that this applies to you, but if the shoe fits....

Seth's interview with the Milky Way last night was also pretty lame. That show didn't need to be 90 minutes long but apparently they were really psyched about that Game of Jones bit.

they've done it before.  wasn't that funny either, but some guest star from the show came in i think and she flipped her shit and that part was pretty awesome.  i didn't watch it last night.  i also thought given the material that the "closer look" would be better than it was.

mayor pete was solid though.  he always delivers.

Yes he was. I wonder how much of the audience he lost by being forced to wait until so late in the show for his interview.

he probably gets more online viewers thru youtube anyway.  his show is late as shit out here/east coast.

Carson and Leno made jokes about politicians.  Colbert and company make political statements in the guise of jokes.  They are not the same thing.  One is comparable to Adam Sandler singing The Hankkahah Song on SNL.  The other one is comparable to Sinead O'Connor tearing up a picture of the Pope while singing a song on SNL.

that comparison seems a little excessive.

i think you have several hosts (oliver, meyers, colbert) that have a background in comedic delivery of current events (the daily show, weekend update, colbert report).  this is a fairly recent phenomenon - and wasn't really around in the 1980's/90's.  then it was all about the monologue, and taking a shot at whatever was in the news.  that's how those writers rooms worked back then - everyone reading newspapers and building bits.

now, you have desk pieces from hosts experienced in delivering current events/political shit in a funny and engaging way.  so yeah, when our president does something stupid or ridiculous, they already have a platform to make it entertaining for their audience.  i don't see it as taking some outrageous political stance from an unusual platform (singing on a stage) just for the sake of theater and spectacle.

i want john oliver and seth meyers doing their thing.  i don't need random actors or musicians getting on soap boxes at award shows.
