Why?

Because it's the offseason and before the draft and free agency.... the silly season starts early!  Simmons has a lot of warts but trading a 22 year old All Star for a 34 (35 in Dec) year old All-Star would be a debacle considering they wouldn't do a similar deal for Kawhi Leonard a 27 year old last summer.

NBA conference finals needs some controversy or fighting to improve ratings and interest.  Maybe suspending Dramond Green for a game could extend that series to 6 games.  The Raptors need Drake to get into a fight with Middleton, George Hill or the Greek Freak!!

NBA fans have Warriors fatigue and not enough stars to watch between Toronto and the Bucks.  In fact the Raptors for most NBA fans are less liked than the San Antonio Spurs were during their championship runs.

Tiger Woods at The PGA Championship will probably get better ratings this weekend than The NBA playoffs....... The NBA has to be praying for an NBA Finals matchup of the Bucks vs Warriors  for any hope that TV ratings don't completely flop.....

Who cares about ratings. I'm personally interested in both of these matchups. Dame and CJ vs Splash Brothers will be great. Kawhi vs. Giannis will be great. All 4 of these teams play quality basketball.

Exactly this.   If people aren't watching they are going to miss out.   These series both should be very good and I cannot wait for them to get started.

Maybe me thinking he is a top 5 GM says more about the GM talent pool than it says about Presti.  Paxon certainly isn't winning a front office of the year award.  Morey, West, Riley, Buford, Ainge are the top execs.  Aside from that, there is a big drop off.  All of those guys have a much better market than OKC to work in as well.

No there's not. Masai Ujiri has done an unbelievable job in Toronto. What Sean Marks has done in Brooklyn is a borderline miracle. Nobody in the league has made more chicken salad than him. Tim Connelly has done an amazing job building that roster in Denver, mainly from scraps. They have had 100% roster turnover in 4 years, had the second best record in the West this year and are the young as hell.  If Michael Porter Jr ever gets healthy and lives up to potential, that's a championship contending squad. How can you overlook Bob Myers at Golden State? Jon Horst hasn't been at Milwaukee very long, but look at the roster he's put together - Ilyasova, Brook Lopez,  Connaughton were all free agent signings. The Bledsoe deal and the George Hill deal have been great for them. And he had the foresight to shitcan Jason Kidd and hire Bud.

I'm sorry but you can't give the credit Myers credit for GSW.  Durant was going there because he wanted a guaranteed championship.  Cousins went because he was injured an almost nobody offered him a deal.  He literally called GSW and said he'd go for the minimum or whatever he got.  By all accounts, Jerry West made that blueprint and set everything in motion.  Nobody was saying "Bob Myers built this team" when West left for LA.  Everyone was saying "West is going to make the Lakers irrelevant in LA with what he has to work with at LAC based on what he did with GSW."

John Hammond was there before and did most of the early building of the Bucks roster before he moved down here to the Magic.

Everyone would go to New York if they felt they could be successful. There is only one guy who went and he might have been the most delusional player in the nba for the last 10 years of his career.... Melo.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, Lillard still has two years left on his current deal. That would make him 34 years old in the last year of the extension. He has averaged more than 36 minutes per game over his career. Outside of Steve Nash, point guards usually don't age very gracefully. In fact, 32 years old is historically when the shit hits the fan. They probably don't have much choice, but that contract is going to be an albatross. Unless they get lucky on a young guy in the draft, you probably just saw their peak.

That was their peak. They got smeared by the Warriors with KD on the shelf, with Nurkic perhaps it would've been a 4-1 series?

Wow, that contract could end up a killer.  Don't get me wrong, he's a very good player, but these supermax deals to smaller guards haven't fared well as they break down.  He'll be 29 this summer with 2 more years before the extension would kick in.  He'd be 33 an 34 years old making around 50 million.  Love that he wants to stay in Portland, but damn....

Agreed.  Stars aligned for them and they pretty much maxed out.  I thought gentleman's sweep but they couldn't even snag a game without KD and Iggy.  They've done some good things but right now they have 126 million guaranteed for next season.  Now, they have guys like Turner, Harkless, and Leonard going into expiring years so they can probably move some of the money, but their back court is on the books for 57 million.  They were lucky and signed Nurkic coming off a bad year so he's a steal at his contract as long as he comes back healthy.  They probably want to re-sign Curry and probably Hood although they may have priced themselves out of their market.  They desperately need to move Turner contract (18 million.  Eww) and may have to attach an asset like a draft pick to do so.

Moving forward they need some additonal frontcourt help.   I know Nurkic was good for them but they need a guy that can score and maybe playmake a little to get both CJ and Dame off the ball.  Also relieve some of the pressure when GSW traps.   Dame and CJ were terrible against the trap but in part it was cause they have NO one else who can handle the ball.

I saw something today about Blake Griffin footing the bill.    Given POR's current cap situation they may have to do something drastic like that and take another big contract  as long as the player fits the bill.

They're definitely going to be in a precarious position and that Turner contract was always baffling. Portland was very fortunate with Nurkic and having him locked up for the long haul with the money they just threw at Lillard is a blessing for them. They're going to end up with a weak bench because they have little wiggle room and with the Lillard/McCollum duo they've been able to get past the semis once and usually went down in a ball of flames 4-0 or 4-1 in the first round or semis in recent years. Hell last year the Pelicans bounced them out of the first round 4-0.

Small market teams don't really have a choice but to give their stars these contracts.  He and CJ put butts in seats.  A roster of young kids that can't win a game doesn't put anyone in a seat.  That's bad for the team and bad for the league.  He is much more of an investment than just a point producer.

That being said, he is doing portland a favor signing it this season.  He could sign it next year and that makes him more of a liability.  Everyone knows that portland has peaked, but with LAC and LAL not quite ready to compete, Denver not quite there, and OKC/SAS not able to put together a solid roster that can win right now, maybe Portland is 1 GSW injury away (and a healthy roster for themselves) from stealing a series and getting swept in the finals.  Steph or Klay go down in that series and Portland is in the finals.  Everyone would get a max deal that could and it would all be dumb contracts but it would also have been a "thank you" investment.

We all knew that no one in the west is competing with GSW this year, and maybe not next year either given how they have played without durant.  So Portland has a 2 year window (this and next) to play at their highest level (conference championship appearance) and to create a local legend in Lillard.  They have to do it.  If not, they lose CJ and Dame and then what?  They sell 50% of their tickets or worse for the next 10 years? Until another Greg Oden comes along and gets them 2 half seasons out of 5 where attendance is at 75%?

Pretty much have to pay the guy, just like OKC had to give the deal to Russ.

Pippen said it right - to earn a supermax, a player should be MVP level or have taken a team to the title.  Guys getting swept every year don't qualify.

Then you have to deal with players leaving their teams.   Particularly from the small market teams.   Is it more important for those teams to keep their star players or for people to feel like the player deserves his contract?

Try to think of it in terms of services rendered rather than future potential, teams have been getting a bargain from these dudes outperforming their contracts.  Now they reap the rewards of hard work.
