Snap has registered 750,000 people to vote in 2020. Here’s its plan to keep going

https://www.fastcompany.com/90553154/snap-has-registered-750000-people-to-vote-in-2020-heres-its-plan-to-keep-going

Highlights below

“Snapchat has already registered more than 750,000 people to vote—twice the amount of users it registered during all of 2018. The company registered half a million users in the last week alone.”

“In 2018, Snap registered 425,000 people to vote, and in a follow-up study, Snap confirmed that 57% of those users reported that they actually voted.”

“Just yesterday, Facebook announced it helped register an estimated 2.5 million people through Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger (which is already up from the 2 million people the company registered in 2016) with a goal of registering 4 million people in all.”

If you know someone in your life that is planning to go with mail-in ballot but they can go vote in person, convince them to go in person. If its an older person doesn't want to stand for an hour, help them borrow a wheelchair that day.

It is so easy to make a mistake that would invalidate a mail-in ballot. Sign the wrong line, or screw up something else, and the ballot ends up in the trash.

I know someone who is vehemently anti-dotard, but is also scared shitless of Covid.  Like has only left her house a few times since March scared.  I've given her every available option for voting.  I think she is going to drop off her ballot at the county drop sites, but man, I'm worried she's going to cower in fear in the end.  She's a bit...off.

There’s curbside voting in Texas. You can contact the people at the site.

Then maybe you can volunteer to help her complete the ballot. I've seen an older family member make a mistake on a mail-in ballot but later mention how they wrote a note on the ballot for the ballot counter to read...  face palm.

govt forms can be easy to screw up.

Texas begins letting people register to vote online when they’re updating their driver’s licenses

some good news

https://www.texastribune.org/2020/09/23/register-vote-online-texas/

After the courts made them do it what 2 or 3 different times?

took our idiot republican leadership in the state way too long to implement such a simple program.

Wasn't this made law in 1993? The Motor Voter law initially meant in-person registration but there is zero reason it didn't apply to any type of drivers license registration. I'm glad the Texas finally recognized the law but its hard to get excited about it taking 27 years to be fully applied.

Southern states are slow to adopt anything cool or meaningful.

get used to it.

Yea it used to just take you to a page where you had to print out the form, fill your info in and then mail it. By putting it online now, the state literally has the infrastructure online to do it statewide, and there is no good reason not to expand. That reason has always existed, just forces Republicans who are against it to go on the record and continue to chip away at credibility and reinforces there is one party who doesn't want you to vote.

Marziani said Wednesday’s move shows the state has the infrastructure in place to expand online voting beyond DPS and renewing driver’s licenses.

“The system they use is the exact same system that they would implement for a broader online voter registration,” Marziani said. “This is a flashing green light for the Legislature to finally bring Texas in line with states across the country and pass online voter registration.”

man fuck the Texas Supreme Court.  They also just voted about 10 days ago to add the 3 Green Party candidates back on the ballot after a district court and appeals court took them off for failing to pay the associated fees.  Its part of a new law in Texas where if you're nominated by a convention you must pay the associated fees to run for office if you don't go the signature route to appear on the ballot.  That new law is currently in court right now arguing about the constitutionality of it and so the supreme court said its their right to run for office and they don't have to pay a fee... (I also have beef with them (and the Texas ble) over how they've handled the bar exam and covid clusterfuck) can't wait to vote those fuckers out

Bingo.

they don’t want to make it convenient. They want you to have to physically print it off, fill it out, put it in an envelope, seal the envelope, and put it in the mail.

its not a hard task, but it’s a lot more arduous then simply filling out the online form on the webpage and hitting the submit button.

At least Texas isn’t going to be a pivotal state like some of the other ones could be.

if I thought Texas was really in play, I’d be more pissed about the Green Party shit.

I get that Dems want Texas to be in play but Hillary still lost by 9% which is a huge number considering the size of Texas. and I get they need supporters to really believe Texas is in play but they also need to be realistic and play the long game. It's not about Biden winning Texas, it's about winning more Texas House seats and maintaining or growing the federal House seats won in 2018.

Nothing wrong with aspirational goals (Biden) but you need to focus on achievable goals.

I understand completely. Winning the Texas house and losing to trump by 4 in this state would be a great outcome in my opinion.

Losing by 9 in a state where Democrats put zero dollars and the candidate made zero appearances is not all that surprising.

As Bill Burr says, this is a great man.  Schwarzenegger truly is amazing.

"Amazing" is an overstatement. But imagine if he was eligible to run for president. His celebrity dwarfs Donald's. The character Schwarzenegger played in the movies is what Trump can only dream of portraying (on his stupid reality tv shows whether The Apprentice or the Presidency). Imagine the two running against each other. Trump would be powerless.

Not every county is as courteous with this as others, especially rural ones.  But you are right in that smart counties that actually want everyone to vote are working hard to provide Drive through and curbside options.

I would not trust the DMV system.  We've had too many people who registered through there to find out later, like during primaries they weren't registered at all.

Just wait until Indictment Paxton gets involved. That guy has a knack for shutting down common sense reforms in the state of Texas.

Wisconsin republicans continue to show that they have no morals, no consistency, and are just flat out evil / shitty people.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/wisconsin-republicans-tried-stifle-plan-145458157.html

They’re trying to stop a “democracy in the park” event in Madison that helps register / turn out/ and collect ballots from voters. It’s an event that happens in Wisconsin every election cycle supposedly. Wisconsin GOP are trying to use........ the coronavirus? As an excuse to not hold the event?

bahahahahah didn’t they just fight Governor Evers tooth and nail on all of his covid 19 restrictions?   I freaking hate these people.

Finally back after a looooooooong needed break from this shit. Given how many of the posters in here are lawyers, I hope y'all are talking to your law friends about the potential for a Brooks Brothers riot at every major polling place since the Consent Decree has expired. I'm expecting every swing state to see crazy shenanigans to basically block counting of all absentee/mail and ballots.

Georgia is polling basically dead even and I know Texas is close as well. I despise Biden but I'll be damned if I don't vote the second my ballot comes in. I just saw my parents for the first time this year and I cannot believe how much more brain poisioned my dad is from just watching Fox news all day.

"Despise?" Seriously? You despise Biden? Why? For fucks sake, why? We've known him for decades. Everybody likes him other than his political opponents right now, none of whom had anything bad to say about him before. At worst, he deserves, 'He wouldn't be my first choice, but...'

If you use the word "despise" to describe your feelings for Biden yet still plan to vote for him, what word do you use to describe your feelings for Trump?

I'm a leftist, I want Biden to quit punching left about how he beat the "Socialist," acknowledge we need to literally get this country to be emission free in the next 15 years if we want to prevent the biggest mass-migration we've seen in a century, as well as acknowledging we need a single-payer government ran healthcare system where health insurance companies don't have a say in denying your coverage over the most flimsy of reasons. Biden's campaign has pushed hard towards the center, yes despite whatever his campaign website has said, and his body of work as a legislator has only hurt the poor and non-white. They need to quit recruiting former Michigan governors that helped poisoned their own citizens to save money to speak at their conventions. That all said, this is a harm reduction vote because the GOP is going to completely eliminate whatever

Trump is a fascist and would be exiled from this country under a just governing system, he's an evil human being and doesn't deserve to draw breath into his lungs.

The next time I visit my mom, I'm doing that. Also, back when I was in college and about to move into my first apartment, I stole some dishes, glassware, and flatware from the restaurant where I was working nights in the bakery in order to furnish the new home. She seemed to think that was the worst crime ever. She ordered me to return them. I stashed them and took them back with me to school. I deserve prison time.

I still have (most of) them. I'll leave some in her cabinet and I'll bet she never notices.

I did this awhile ago.  When they call, just say their “tv tuner” must be broken.  Then delay a few weeks before you can come look at it and then say you called a TV repair shop and the part has to be special ordered.  If you can make it it a month, you will be amazed at how normal your parents will seem.
