I’m with you on this. Like most things in life, the prep work (pants down) and clean up (wipe and suit back up) take way way longer than the actual DRE itself.

I had no time to contemplate what was happening or make a funny "ooo-oooh" noise like I considered doing beforehand.  It happened abruptly following the instructions to put my elbows on the table.  It was not gentle.  It was all business and quick business at that.  Then, the box of Kleenex and instructions to "go ahead and wipe up."

Well, my GP sent me to a urologist for a 2nd opinion about my prostate. Turned out the specialist was quite a nice looking blond cougar, so the digital exam was kinda nice. She followed it up by extensively fondling my junk and looking at it very closely. That used to be the 100 Peso Especial at Papagayo’s in Nuevo Laredo.

I chose a female doc(off their website) in Encinitas just for that same experience.

My first prostate exam wasn't that bad. The Doc put his hands on my shoulders and told me I'd feel a little pressure. It was over in a few minutes.

Did he happen to say your prostate was "Fabulous!"?

Due to family history, I've been getting these gems yearly since I was 35.  The highlight so far was when I went in for a post vasectomy follow-up and the Dr wasn't in.  So his fairly young/hot PA did the scrotal exam then went ahead and did the DRE since I was already there.  I had no idea how much more pleasant it is with her slim, feminine fingers.  I hope they don't think it's weird, but I believe I'll be requesting her for my DREs from now on.

Well did you cum or what?

Same here. I had mine in late December. He removed 2 polyps that were non cancerous. He said I don’t have to have another one for another 10 years. The prep absolutely sucked, but the lunch the next day was glorious.

That sounds off to me. I was every 5-years because of age and family history, but they found a polyp last year, so I’m now on a 3-year schedule. Even if you don’t have a family history, it surprises me that they’d advise you wait 10 years after they found 2 polyps.

Our family had a history of colon cancer. I had one done when I was 40. they found a couple non cancerous/benign polyps then. Now it's every 3 years.  They found 6 pre cancerous polys on my last visit.  Waiting 10 years from my last exam could have been a death sentence.

This, on the three year schedule.

They found one precancerous polyp during mine and I'm on a 5 year cycle now.

5 is a long time IMO.  I had a friend get an aggressive form of colon cancer and was dead within 3 years.  I've been on a 3 year cycle for 6 years now.  Pre cancerous is one step from cancerous.

Both of the polyps I had removed were biopsied and found to be non pre-cancerous. I guess that’s why they said 10 years? I’ll mention it to me GP next time I go in for a physical. I’d rather be safe than sorry. The procedure, while not great, isn’t so bad that I couldn’t do it every 3 years to be on the safe side.

My wife’s a doctor, and she says 10 years sounds too long for a repeat colonoscopy if polyps were found, even non cancerous polyps in someone with no family history of colon cancer. My polyps (turns out there were two) were non cancerous, but my mother - and her mother - died of colon cancer. So, I’m on the 3-year plan. I would think that a pre-cancerous polyp would bump anyone up to the 3-year plan.

Or, my doctor likes me better.

This is the best course of action.  10 years is for sure too long, 5 would be too long IMO, once you find a polyp, benign or pre cancerous.

SEE: post 64.  Lost one of the best football players I ever had the privilege of getting run over by... several times a season.

Was reading about it last night.  Seems like the schedule depends on the number and size of the polyp found.  I'll have to look at the records to see the size of the one they removed.  I'm also a squeaky wheel and will put it on my calendar to bug my doc about this in a few years.

I had a colonoscopy done just over a week ago. They knocked me out and the procedure was easy. The prep kit sucked the day before the procedure.

Get one done if you have family history or at the age of 45. They found and removed polyp that would have most likely been cancerous in 5 years. I get to do it again in three years.

remind me to buy you a beer soon

My doc said they changed the classification of the DRE which makes it optional. Something about little evidence to support the benefits and high number of false positives which results in numerous unneeded biopsies. He asked if I wanted one at my last annual. I told him that I would not particularly enjoy it but that he’s the one who is qualified to make the call and to do what is medically recommended.

He personally hadn’t seen the benefit himself in his experience so he advised against it. So I didn’t get the poke.

My ass un-puckered quickly last week when the doc said no more fingers up the butt, unless your blood work comes back with indicators.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had 10 exams the passed 4 years. Since last year, my PSA jumped two full points to 8.2. Additional blood work said 50% chance of cancer. Urologist said she I was passed her level of expertise (and I think her interest) but she started talking to me about cancer treatments. She referred me to UTSW Dallas and a world class urologist. He scheduled an MRI fusion biopsy. The MRI scared me more than cancer. Luckily Valium is a hell of a drug and I didn't give a rip even though I was fully inside the machine with a probe stuck up my butt, hitting my tonsils. Luckily everything was clear and no lesions, so no biopsy. Now I'm on the twice a year plan but no cancer.

Since then I have talked to several people who have high numbers but refuse to get checked. They seem to be more scared of knowing they have cancer than dying from it. If you have high numbers, get checked. It's one of the easiest cured if caught early. And as my urologist told me, you can still get it up even after surgery. Or in her exact words " worst case scenario we can put a pump in, you can keep it up as long as you want and do anything you like with it".

Pics of your urologist?

congratulations on the clean bill of health

She's nice enough but not anyone you necessarily want to see. I actually met her once at church and she didn't remember me. I wanted to bend over, drop my pants and say "maybe you recognize me now?"

And thanks. It's hell when all your parts start wearing out.
