THAT'S A TEXAS WINNER! @Sheabug29 finishes it off as No. 3 Texas softball (19-3) rebounds from an earlier one-run Saturday loss to beat No. 13/11 Michigan, 1-0!

BSU up 2-1. Already 6 hits and 2 runs off Elish

I don’t think this’ll last pitching Miranda so much. Mike has to give Day and Shea more opportunities. Even Adams

they should get a bunch of work in the next 2 tournaments.

The last photo in koopa's post above is Brooke Bolinger,  UT grad and former pitcher.    Nice to see her support.

Brooke is from Yucaipa on the east side of LA. Glad she was there!

Through 23 games, we are 20-3.  We've already almost hit half our win total from last year (46-17).  Through 23 games in 2019, we were 19-4.  So not a big difference there in record.

Quality of wins/losses is way different:

  • 2020 - we've already beaten #12, #10/9, #1, #2 and #13/11, with losses to #10/9, RV Duke and RV Fresno State (3 losses by 3 runs total)
  • 2019 - we had beaten RV California, #18/21 Kentucky, RV Ole Miss twice, #15/17 ASU.  We had some bad losses in there - 6 run loss to #8/7 LSU, 2 run loss to RV Wisconsin in 9 innings, 3 run loss to #15/17 ASU and a 3 run loss to #22/RV Minnesota (4 losses by a total of 14 runs)

In 2019, we hit 41 HR in 63 games. We already have 20 in 23 games.  We are on pace to beat 41 HR pretty easily.  The extra power is coming from Day (5) and Elish (4) - Elish is already 2 off her 2019 total.  Shannon has hit 2 (8 in 2019) and Iakopo has 3 (11 in 2019) so I expect these to increase. Burke has already matched her 2019 total.

The Longhorn Invitation teams coming in should provide some stat padding and opportunities for Day, Adams and Shea to get innings and let Elish rest.  Not even sure I'd pitch her this weekend if you don't have to.

  • Liberty - 7-11 record, though they do have a win over Ole Miss and Michigan
  • Texas Southern - 7-10
  • New Mexico - 10-10, though they do have a win over Stanford

Honestly, I'd say save Elish for the T-Town Showdown, where we face Alabama twice (March 13 and March 15).  Then we have the week off until we head to Norman (March 20-22).  We will know by March 23 if Texas is going to contend for the Big 12 or play second fiddle.

Texas is #1 in the new D-1 Softball poll

Image result for champ kind whammy gif

UCLA (beaten) #2
UW (beaten) #3
ULL (1-1 record) #5
OU (3 games) #6
OSU (3 games) #9
Alabama (2 games) #11
Michigan (beaten)  #17
Baylor (3 games) #23
Utah (beaten) #24

So far that is 5-1 record versus the top 25 with 11 more games to play.

Turns out beating #1, #2, and splitting with #8 covers for losing to Fresno State

#3 in NFCA - they did "punish" us for the Fresno loss

Burke is the Big 12 POW - .458 average with 7 XBH and 6 RBIs for the week
Shea is the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week - 2-0, 2.33 ERA, 11 K in 15 innings (ugh, the UW game) over #9/10 ULL and #13/11 Michigan

The Cal coach retired suddenly due to health reasons.  Of course, their associate HC will be the interim.

If Cal opts to go with an outside hire after the season, keep an eye on Texas assistant Chelsea Spencer. She played at Cal from 2002-2005.  4 straight WCWS trips, a national title in 02 and two second place finishes in 2003 and 2004.  Star SS who played in 277 consecutive games.

Would hate to lose her.    She has greatly improved Slack.  (though work to be done  😉)

And the chemistry between her and MW would be difficult to replace.

She'd be a legit candidate.  Because she's an alum, she has Pac-12 coaching experience and she's not a head coach, so she's cheap.  Cal can't pay.  The current coach makes jack shit, to my knowledge.

The whole UC system administration half wishes (or full wishes in many of the faculty's case) that sports would just go away. Makes sense.
