2020 Texas Softball - Back to OKC!

Re:  js' post above.    UW made the decision based on the fact the Seniors would graduate before Spring '21.

"UW Athletics places tremendous emphasis on its student-athletes earning an undergraduate degree and having a great competitive experience," Wisconsin officials said in the statement. "In the case of the UW spring student-athletes to which the NCAA's waiver would apply, a substantial percentage of the student-athletes are scheduled to earn their degrees before next spring. In spite of today's uncertainties, we will do everything possible to support our student-athletes as they work toward those degrees.

"The athletic department has made the decision to not pursue waivers that would extend the eligibility of our senior student-athletes. Student-athletes in their fourth year of eligibility have concluded their careers with us. This group of student-athletes has our full support up to, including and beyond graduation. They are Badgers for life and we are greatly appreciative of the way they have represented our department and the university."

CDC's comments.   Seems key will be acceptance to grad school which he says is being worked by the academic staff.

She'll have one year of eligibility - she played 2 years at JUCO, then a full season and a shortened season at Ole Miss.

2019 - 14-8, 2.15 ERA, 11 CG, 5 SHO, 166.1 IP, 166 K / 38 BB --- 2nd Team All SEC
2020 - 5-6, 3.42 ERA, 3 CG, 1 SHO, 71.2 IP, 64 K / 22 BB

So we are getting someone who can pitch a lot of innings, but won't need to, and has a very good K/BB ratio.

Fantastic job Mike!

Will she be a super senior and not count against roster limits, or does the transfer make her a counter?  Or are they just ignoring roster limits for a season?

If you stay at your school to play a super senior year, you don't count against the roster limit.  Because she's a transfer, she counts.  The only sport who got roster limit relief was baseball.

Texas is going to have 7 (!!!) pitchers on staff:

Super seniors: Elish, Jacobsen
Senior but junior athletically: Adams
Junior but sophomore athletically: O'Leary
Sophomore but freshman athletically: Day, Green, White

Currently, the roster is 17 returning players + 7 incoming players (6 freshman, 1 transfer) - only 3 are 'uncounted' - Rhodes, Washington, Elish.  So we will be carrying 24 players, with 21 counted against the roster.  I'm very curious if anyone leaves or if White is automatically redshirted (and the other freshman too).

Thanks for posting !

Will be interesting.   A cursory look at the bios (all female) reveals all are native Californians.   Marder (tOSU '10) and Deniz (UCLA '02) are hitting coaches while Chelsea's (Cal '05) speciality is defense - worked wonders with ours.

Have mixed emotions.   Certainly would hate to lose her but support her in her career goals.   To return to Cal as head coach would be special.    Have confidence that MW would hire an outstanding replacement.

I saw that left handed pitcher Grace Green is also in the portal. Good luck to her wherever she ends up.

Best of luck to Tuesday (Ft Worth native).     She accepted her role and was a great teammate.

UNT is building a solid program under second year Coach DeLong.     We won 3-2 in 9 innings back in Feb.    Dang,  I miss softball (and baseball).

Edit:   UNT was 19-5 with victories over ULL and split a DH with OU.

All the players from last year get that year back, correct? So somebody like Day is still technically a FR next season?

I would be somewhat surprised if Adams doesn't transfer.

Believe so for spring sports. I could see the incoming FR redshirt to preserve a year for them.

UNT had a good team this year. Them or WKU would have won C-USA. Best of luck to Tuesday

Even with Elish and Jacobson gone after next season, Texas will be stacked on the mound.

Day and O'Leary getting the year back means they will only be a FR and Sophomore next season. With a top 20 national prospect (Ryleigh White) coming in this recruiting class. That's 3 really talented underclassmen arms.

ESPNU, today  13 May,   5PM,  Game 3,  2012 Super Regional,  Texas vs Oregon (game 3).   If not mistaken,  Mike White's initial trip to Austin.

Unfortunate that game 2 (8 inn) which was the pivotal game is not shown.   The game that Connie erred in not starting Rachel Fox.   Poor Blaire had to start all 3 games.   Fox transferred to aggy the following year.   Though we went to the WCWS the following year,  the 2012 SR really affected the program,  imo.

Yes it did, eventually leading to the Mike White era.

Also Kim Bruins REALLY stepped up after Fox transferred. She pitched some legit games in OKC.

MY LAST RANT - that Hoagland “foul ball” in game 1 of the regional against Northwestern was a HR and we should have won that game. Playing out of the loser’s bracket put an extra game of stress on Luna when we should have swept our way to the supers with Fox throwing a game,  considering we won the next 4 games by a combined 26-2

South Carolina stud 3B in the portal. Texas went after Klingler last year because of a hole at the 3B/SS position.  Does Mike go for it? In 2+ seasons, .301 hitter, 23 doubles, 5 triples, 25 HR, 98 RBI, .959 fielding.

We still have a big ???? at 3B/SS

As a refresher (primarily for myself 🙂),  below is the incoming class of freshmen.   Link has bio's.    Someone posted earlier that Washington may have the inside track on SS,  though tough to immediately step-in.     iirc,  there was one game where Tedder moved to 2B and Janae played SS - Spencer said on LHN they were just experimenting.   Tedder played 2B in travel ball.    That would probably be a last resort.

Suppose Grace Green entered the portal to pursue her pitching career but she was very athletic, good hitter, and could have helped in the OF - hated to see her leave.     Suppose Miranda will continue to play some in the OF (fingers crossed, no injury).

Re: Spencer.   Any word on the Cal search for head coach ?    Read that Cal will have online classes for the Fall semester.   Cal initially dropped their baseball program a few years ago until rescued by prominent alumni.   Hope softball stays.

Signees include (Position(s)/Hometown/High School/Travel Ball): Carlee Ratcliff (1B/3B/New Boston, Texas/New Boston High School/Texas Bombers-NTX), Jayden "JJ" Smith (C/1B/Rosenberg, Texas/George Ranch High School/Texas Bombers 18U Gold), Alyssa Washington (SS/IF/Abilene, Texas/Abilene High School/Impact Gold DFW), Jordyn Whitaker (DP/1B/Jacksonville, Texas/Jacksonville High School/Texas Bombers-NTX), Ryleigh White (RHP/Washington Township, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy/Athletics Mercado) and Bailey Williams (UTL/Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley High School/Corona Angels).

Minnesota lost their coach to Ole Miss and hired a new coach faster than Cal has handled their opening

Latest update:

The search for a new head coach @CalSB is taking some unusual turns it seems. Sources say Cal Officials had honed in on @AztecSoftball Associate Head Coach Stacey Nuveman Deniz for the job. Nuveman Deniz however had apparently turned down the opportunity to proceed last week. The same sources have told RTS that @CalSB Officials have reengaged Nuveman Deniz and would like to have further discussions with her about taking the position. Meanwhile @TexasSoftball Assistant and Cal Alum Chelsea Spencer remains in the wings as a candidate. #Rounding3rdSB.

Washington sounds like she is coming to compete.  Of course didn’t get to finish senior year softball season. Some Jr. stats:  During her 2019 junior campaign at Abilene H.S., she batted .567 with 55 hits, 38 runs scored, 12 doubles, three triples, 15 HR's, 48 RBIs and 16 stolen bases on the way to earning Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) First-Team

Very happy for Coach Spencer.

Nice words in the tweet by Coach White.     We will need someone to develop a shortstop, pronto.    Chelsea greatly improved Slack.
