  1. I got my boy out from La Junta. As far as I can tell the whole camp got to high ground well in advance of the bad stuff and watched the camp get obliterated. My son is 8 and they took the younger kids to the backside facing away from the camp and river and did a bunch of games and songs etc. One of the first things he said to me was he asked if they’re still doing the fireworks tonight. I love that camp.

  2. I'm heartbroken by this event, like many here not one of us 4 in my family doesn't know someone at most 2 Kevin Bacon steps from ourselves who is dealing with loss of human life. So much I could post, including why this storm was so bad - we get lots of Mexican landfall tropical systems that come in early hurricane season and don't. I'll pick that up maybe in a few days if interest. Not definitive answers but good estimates. Mainly I wanted to give a few words on today for ATX and immediate areas: This storm's center is almost on top of us, moving very slowly ENE. It's been bubbling today, that is the early a.m. concentration was up in San Saba/Burnet areas, and now seems to have formed another "barbell end" S/SE of ATX east of San Antonio in the Lower Guadalupe/Blanco area. Watch there in particular the next few hours and take care. However, there are some training storms N to S in W. Travis/Hays. Right now they're not too sated and are moving; however in some spots they're in a long line and could strengthen and douse a given area. It's next to impossible to know exactly where the "reds" will boil up and move. So stay near home or off roads where running water comes into play. Barry's remnants have lost a little punch in the last few hours, but there's always the danger of a "bomb spot" especially as diurnal heating takes place today over the system. Fortunately they ground around us is cooler from the past days' rains and might help reduce the intensity. This storm will slowly slide east of the 35 corridor by sunset or so, and being on the "backside" of it, will definitely decrease the totals. Tomorrow can see more rain but not what we've seen, even in Austin. By Monday this should be reduced to spotty light/medium showers widely scattered. Any questions etc. I'll try to check in. My heart and prayers go out for the grief that you can just feel over this region today. Godspeed to loved ones dealing with this.

  3. We are talking about CR because we have a bunch of bitch ass snowflakes that are offended by reality. The fact they cant see the reality is the problem. Also cry less pussies. Kids died and we have a bunch of grandstanding politicians ignoring their own malfeasance and having the audacity to claim some sort of political win all while making it all about them. They throat the very person that is actively gutting the very thing that could potentially prevent this. What a backwards world we live in that we claim CR on that. Fuck you and I hope you reap the oats you sow you fucking animals.

  4. A post from a friend… This is a tragedy beyond tragedy's. Violent storms on the evening of 7/3 flooded the Guadalupe River which Camp Mystic rests on. The damn broke and all the younger girl cabins down on the "Flats" as they call it were basically submerged. From my daughter Tiny, "Water rose up to the door mom. The only way out was to break the back window and climb out. It was am and I couldn't find my shoes. I was so scared but I kept going. I had my retainers in but didn't want to lose them, so l put them in the pocket of my pajamas. We climbed through the window and headed up the hill. The rocks really hurt my feet and I was so cold and shivering. We got to the top of the mountain and our counselor Annabelle was with us and was so awesome. She kept us safe under a tree. We huddled shivering and singing songs in the dark. Mom I thought I was going to die I was so scared. The thunder and lightening was so loud. Once it got lighter out we made our way back down to the Cypress side of camp and then Annabelle through us over the river and we ran into the dining hall of Cypress where we sat in the dark. They found me some dry clothes. We all just sat there waiting and waiting for hours. Then we were told we were getting on helicopters. Mom I didn't know if I would see you again."

  10. I love how you show up to chastise emotional posters here for not giving you information, but you don’t extend that expectation to your elected officials who spend the 30 minutes of a press conference giving no information. I’ve lived through Harvey, which had a new press conference every few hours. I guess my experience with emergency press conferences differs from yours, since apparently your’s all start with a 30 minute dick sucking session and providing zero information about things like missing or dead citizens.

  11. If we’re talking about systems state officials have available…just treat life-threatening floods like they react whenever a cop gets shot: Blaming the NWS is chickenshit. But the next time I see Texas state officials take responsibility for dropping the ball will be the first.

  15. Oh fuck off. Your guys are already literally blaming this on evil Biden weather modification and shit. Whereas the sane people are noting that state authorities have an easy mechanism to send statewide alerts out: they use it whenever a cop gets a hangnail, even in the middle of the night. But for this? Nada from state authorities. This state is poorly run, and it’s getting exponentially worse by the day. The only thing holding shit together are some local governments - which are run mostly by regular Texans, your neighbors - and volunteer decent Texans. There will be a shitload of failure analysis after this, but don’t worry your little head, nobody in the group that has run this state for the past 30+ years will take any responsibility. We’ll just hear the new official state motto: “It could have been worse.” My fellow Texans are fucking dying, and not one of those fuckers cares about anything but themselves. Makes me want to puke.

  17. Let me say something about the CR accusations: I don't think any clear-minded individual would watch these dicksticks on parade and think "yep, those are some real leaders right there, yessir", regardless of party/persuasion. These people are not only grandstanding they are getting in the way of information flow which is beyond vital at this point. Maybe Ann Richards pulled similar stunts, I don't remember. Shame on her if she did. This shit should transcend politics, but somehow commenting on it is "political" when it's just factual.

  18. Day's Final Update: - Convection/rainfall has greatly diminished this evening as hoped & mentioned in my previous post. Latest NWS guidance keeps open the possibility of scattered heavy rain just like last night, although factors aren't as strong. This means hopefully spottier rains. But I expect it to pick up in the post-midnight hours as influx of warm, moist air re-feeds the column of saturated mid-level core. - However, the system hasn't moved much, in fact seems to have wobbled a bit SW to just west of Round Rock. Unfortunately the trough I hoped would pull it up is just too weak in this part of the country to drag it out - there's just nothing to influence moving it away right now. So what's going to happen is default - a high pressure ridge to our east is going to slowly work its way in from the Mississippi Valley region and nudge the system back westward. It's weakened somewhat but by no means isn't still strong enough for another round of flooding rain - but not to the destructive degree before. - However, this means again more heavy rain for some part of the Hill Country - were exactly is impossible to predict (models are suggesting the more northern quadrant again)- possible early a.m. tomorrow. Flood watches are now well into Sunday afternoon/early evening. I think ATX will escape the worst, lying just to the east of the core (again!) - our flood risk is a 1, vs. 2 or 3 west of Travis/Williamson. This is still a potentially dangerous situation west of 281 for tomorrow. Unfortunately, this thing is going to die a slow, gradual death, not finally GTFO. But again, the hopeful prediction here is less than the last 2 rain bombs. Sunday will see this system move over the Hill Country and hopefully a little weaker. It'll either finally meander SW and die out or kick up towards the panhandle, then out. But that's for tomorrow, hopefully I can get a handle on how this thing is gonna end once and for all. Finally, I know adults are among the deceased and I grieve for them as well, I just want to leave this in memory of those lovely little gals who've perished in this disaster. We remember you. (This was my daughter's favorite stuffed animal when she was at that age.)

  19. Its summertime, so for some the panties ride up a bit too snugly as they pace back and forth wringing their hands. When discomfort could simply be relieved with a gentle tug of perspective on their bunged up panties. Now that I have addressed the incessant drone of summertime whine... One of the things that I think is fantastic about the guys we have on campus is that despite they are bonding in a manner never before seen at Texas, we have record academic performance from record talented group of players! Herman departed with a 2.33 GPA average, this Spring the GPA average is 3.31! One of the hardest things a coach does when they take over a team is try to "change the culture." You hear it time and again. As at first the new head coach is usually forced to add lead motivator and lead disciplinarian to their coaching duties until they can indoctrinate enough upperclassmen with their culture to take over the motivation and disciplinary roles. Look at WTF Sark has done! He now has upperclassmen that can lead both on and off the field. The upperclassmen now are the disciplinarians, and motivators, they hold the newbies to a hgher standard. A standard that has been passed to them from Sark and they have bought into. The bottom line is that you have to not only be an amazing athlete to get a fat NIL check from the University of Texas, you have to have the right sort of mindset, attitude and smarts. I love that Sark has chosen wisely kids that realize that academic performance is important!!!! The main reason I think smarts are important? Because smart kids tend to be able to see past themselves. If you cannot see past yourself, then you can never truly create the sort of team every coach dreams of. One that sees itself as a collective with a common goal, rather than a collective of individuals with personal, then team goals. That's how you end up with a kid like Arch Manning, willing to let his personal aspirations take a back seat to perhaps obtain a greater team goal. And smart kids... are a lot more likely to understand success takes a lot more than simply very talented individuals. It takes individuals dedicated to a goal greater than themselves. things like personal development on and off the field are what makes pinnacle goals like National Championships possible by building the "right kind" of team. SO... whenever we miss out on a guy I always wonder what all the dynamics are. Beyond simply writing a check. Because at TEXAS, we can write all the fucking checks we want. But it's the kid beyond the physical talent that will determine the quality of your team in the coming years. And tight now we have both the most talented, and smartest team we have had on campus in a while. So relax! Finish out your July 4th weekend, and pull those wadded up panties out of your ass if you are one of those. We are in a good place recruiting, and a good place with this team from a talent perspective. And we will continue to be, as long as we keep handing our shit the way we have been. And if we miss out on Freshmen, we simply move to the transfer window. All we need do now is keep on this course... and very, very, very good things are ahead. Hook'em! And prayers to all those in the Hill Country whose lives have been turned upside down by this weekends tragic flooding.

  20. Sad but true - it’s actually four, not three. Two of the girls were confirmed deceased in the last couple of hours, and two still missing with little hope. 21. I know no one wants to say it right now, but the people that own and operate the camps hold a lot of responsibility here. If you’re hosting that many children, at a site that close to a flood prone river, you should have at least one person on staff monitoring this 24/7, and a well established and trained evac plan.

  27. EXACTLY. It is not partisan to note that a given politician performed poorly at his or her job. It’s not about policy or ideology. We’re talking about the basic blocking and tackling of state governance. And these fucking clowns went on stage and shit themselves on a live broadcast in front of God and Texas. Even fucking TexAgs saw it clearly for the distasteful brown nosing circus that it was, for Christ’s sake. But a handful of manbabies on the DT board can’t bear the embarrassment of their own sycophantic support for self-adulating narcissist windbags. Because they’re spoiled fail-children who have never had to face the consequences of any of their lifetimes of bumbling fuckups. For fuck’s sake. Grow up and learn to absorb uncomfortable ideas without crying to the board police like a giant fucking pussy.

  30. This is a horrific tragedy, and I feel for everyone affected. I am compelled to post, but what is there to say? Word's haven't been invented to capture or convey the horror of an unknown number of dead kids. I went to La Junta until 13, and the memories I have from there are among the best of my childhood. My brothers did, too, and my sister went to Camp Mystic. Had timing been different, it could have been one of us who was swept away in a flood, leaving behind grieving parents and the lingering, unanswerable question of why. I guess the one thing that might give some solace is that in the worst of tragedies we often see the best of men. It won't be from a politician. It will be from people there, doing what they can, at sacrifice or peril to themselves. You are already hearing allusions to it. How some of the counselors managed to guide their campers to safety. How posters here will be on their way to help in the recovery. Keep those stories coming, because they are the light in a time of darkness.

  32. So I’m a bit of an expert on the San Gabriel, at least for a few hours this morning. Got a call from a relative who lives in one of the flooded RV parks, that the Georgetown police had knocked on her door and told her to GTFO. Wife and I drop kids at friends down the street, head up there in our minivan, expecting to quickly empty much of her RV into it, well at least the important stuff. We get there, water is way up, she’s not leaving because either her RV goes or she doesn’t. She’s got two small dogs and we had them ready to go, but she’s pissed. The hitch in my minivan is good for small boats, kayak trailer, smaller uhaul trailers and bike racks. I’m not driving down into muddy/rocky area and trying to tow an RV that will tax my van - my van is worth more than her RV. Thankfully a friend in the area came through in minutes, got her RV towed to a local school and we moved her and her car up from the park. That shit came up so fast though. There were RVs that had bad wheels or problems or whatever that couldn’t get towed in time. I counted at least a dozen in one small section, which given that I know a few of them, that is their home, so it’s got to be devastating, TLDR: Georgetown PD (or whatever law enforcement agency it was) did good work and got people evacuating. San Gabriel came up really fucking fast. On, and if you live in an RV, don’t own a fucking sedan, own a truck or SUV that can pull said RV instead of relying on family and friends of family to drive up from Central Austin to help you out.

  33. I’ve seen this twice now in your posts, please stop ending them with “the lakes better fill up.” It’s fucking crass, akin to human sacrifice. Fucking stop it, please. How do I know no one was monitoring, or they didn’t have a plan, or there was negligence? Because a fuck ton of fucking little girls are dead, motherfucker. Either they didn’t have a plan, they didn’t have someone monitoring, or the person monitoring was negligent and fell asleep or fucked off to do whatever. Because the people sounding alarms were consistent from 12 hours before and got increasingly urgent through the night and finally issued a warning that could have gotten girls out of cabins before they woke up “by water at their chins.” The kids aren’t woken up by the water itself unless, somewhere, there is fucking negligence. The proof is the dead children.

  34. I don't think it can be parsed that fine. This is thread for the July 4 floods, period. There was a press conference. It was a circle jerk. People are angry that they aren't getting information. It's not "CR" to be angry about a lack of information due to grandstanding politicians. There is no way to split hairs between threads to that degree. No way.

  40. I’m really sick of Texans dying and it being at least being partly attributable to Texas politicians’ choices over the last 30 years. The freeze, Uvalde, this. I’m fuckig tired of it, I’m fuckig angry, and I’m really angry at my fellow Texans who continue to reward policies that lead to dead Texans and NEVER, EVER, even in the slightest, hold these assholes accountable.

  41. I don’t know why, but the retainers line got me. The idea that a kid fleeing for her life would think about her responsibilities, probably worried that losing a couple hundred dollars worth of plastic would upset her parents. It’s just… holy shit.

  42. The thing about climate change, and this is no CR, but think of it like loaded dice, and you want to prepare for the worst case scenario being both worse than historical standards and more often. Whatever the worst case is: flash floods, hurricane winds, tidal surge, drought, heat death, lake effect snow, etc. To stick with the gambling metaphor: if in the past you’d roll a snake eyes occasionally and lost your original stake, now you roll it much more often, and your stake and house is on the line. And you don’t roll a 9 nearly as often to make money/have a good time. So for central Texas, you’ll have both more drought and, given how heat affects atmospheric dynamics, more catastrophic flooding.

  43. Placing blame is a coping mechanism. Our brains don't like the idea of "terrible stuff happens and sometimes there's nothing you can do about it," so we rationalize it by finding fault. It's a subconscious way of adding a "we're in control" element to a situation (implied by placing blame for the lack of control). Others understand this and preemptively defend themselves against the blame they know is coming, which only makes matters worse. As always, there are degrees to it, none of which are universally applicable But calm, rational thought has gone the way of the dinosaur and wisdom/judgment left the building a long time ago.

  45. Life in the country is different. You can't take what you know about the city and translate it, it doesn't work like that. It is in the country, a big area with very few people. My ranch is in Bandera & Uvalde Counties. Bandera is the County Seat and had 829 people in 2020 (~ 35 miles away), and Uvalde is the County Seat, w/ 15,217 people in 2020 (~ 50 miles away). That is an 80+ mile stretch of roadways with no town over 1,000 people in it. It is in a box canyon, one way in and out, across two low water crossings and the creek crossing and there are no roads over the hills. The long list of people to call in an emergency? Volunteer Fire Dept, Constable, Sheriff, DPS, Game Warden, Life Flight Helicopter to SA. A "flotilla of locals with pickup trucks -- god knows they have plenty of those -- and of course some busses." I'm lucky I have 4 neighbors I can call in an Emergency, after that I'm calling the guys who drilled the water well, or put up the fence, or the A/C guy. During a flood emergency, if I have issues, so do they. If I can't get out, they can't either. And no one is driving in. You have to be prepared in advance, and self contained, for some minimal period of time. It sucks. Especially when kids are put at risk. Prayers for all that are impacted. The storms that came through Austin last month blew threw town at 50 miles an hour. This one parked in 1 place for a day. Harvey stayed in SE Texas for a week. They all came with flood warnings. I know I get pissed when I see and hear those alerts on the TV. I know I am high and dry, so quit interrupting my game, dammit! The circumstances of each storm are different, and damn near impossible to predict. To compound things, this was a Federal holiday on a Friday of a 3 day weekend, which means minimal staffing at all levels of government. Guys were drilling my water well during the Uvalde Elementary shooting. I told them to leave if they needed to. They shrugged, "... too far away, and nothing they could do." Damn near every town in the Hill Country has had a major flood in the past 50 years, because they are all along rivers. It is hard to say one place is worst than the next, probably one place that has been hit twice since then. The bolded part of your post is absolute. If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, there is no escape. When I go to other ranches, I look up into the trees, to see how high the water has been in the past. I've learned over the years, if I want my avatar to look like my ranch, we need a tropical storm to do it. I hate that for me to have what I want, others have to suffer. I grew up with it and have always known it can be dangerous when it rains. There is an old car along Onion Creek, by an old (probably gone) low water crossing in Del Valle, that is wrapped around a tree and folded in half like a playing card on a bicycle wheel. I probably saw it in the lates 60's, and I think about that every time it starts raining. We went to Buffalo Trails Scout Ranch in the Davis Mountains in ~ 2006. We did the back country hiking and camping program when the remnants of a tropical storm made it over us and parked for a while. The camp had a little creek running through it. When we came to camp mid week to resupply, the creek had cut the camp in half, and they couldn't let us go back out. Never thought that would have happened in the Mountains in West Texas, We've had a similar floods at my ranch, smaller watershed and creek, went from dry to ~ 60-80,000 gal/sec (2 swimming pools) in about 2 hours. There was minor flooding downstream, no fatalities, so it probably never happened, officially. Thunder Creek is the appropriate name for my ranch, and the valley. This. You can't make anything fool proof, because fools are so ingenious. Human behavior. I tell every visitor, "Every thing at the ranch, plant or animal, is tougher than you are. It has survived by biting, or stinging, or scratching, or poking, or itching, or doing whatever it has to so you will go away. If I say don't run, that means don't run. If I say stay away, that means stay away. And the life flight helicopter comes from San Antonio; the GPS coordinates are on the wall." I marvel at how much better the kids behave when they leave, compared to when they got there. Y'all be safe.
