  1. You guys notice that Saltines (Original Premium) have changed recently? It's like they're not as crispy and less salty. I had to start buying the Keebler Zesta's instead.
  2. Franklin's video on trimming and seasoning a brisket. The trimming portion was especially helpful to me.
  3. Not sure I follow your meaning. But I've had a lot of brisket that tastes too salty. The 1:1 salt:pepper by weight (1:4 by volume) worked well for me and wasn't too salty. As for seeing the meat through the rub, Franklin does it this way too, so it's not a totally crazy notion.
  4. I've used the above method for hot-n-fast brisket on my UDS twice with very good results. It's posted on about every BBQ forum out there, and seems to produce consistent results for people. It's about as simple as it gets. I recommend ordering some pink butcher paper on Amazon prior as I hear it can be a pain to find.
  5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Grace Check that one off the list too..
  6. Is this real life? I feel like i'm taking crazy pills.
  7. I too find Terry Blacks to be too salty. Have had the beef rib and brisket twice and both times.. Meat was cooked well, great smoky flavor, but the overly salty bark almost ruins it for me.
  8. Not looking for new books necessarily, just ones you've discovered as an adult and really enjoyed. Ready Player One - I'm sure everyone knows this one by now. Must read if you were a kid in the 80s. The movie was shite by the way.. The Dog Stars - Peter Heller - post apocalyptic theme. Written by an outdoor magazine writer. It reminded me of a Comac Mcarthy novel, but not as overly wordy and dark. The audio version is great too. If you're a dude who enjoys the outdoors and has ever contemplated survivalist scenarios, I can't imagine you wouldn't appreciate it.
  9. Interesting. Because the WiFi AP they give you w Google fiber is complete shite. I have a Netgear R7000 cause it will switch gigabit speeds.. it's ok, but not super impressed overall. Parental controls don't work as advertised, the 5ghz is janky, and logging is non existent. I'm considering a Ubiquiti system, or maybe flashing to an open source firmware first to try it out. That comes w it's own headaches though..
  10. My employer sells me stock at a discounted price -15% in an ESPP plan. I generally just sell it right away to collect the automatic profit. Anyway, the employer reports the discount as wages on my W-2, so I pay tax on that up front. Well turns out the IRS won't allow the brokerage to report the cost basis on the 1099 adjusted for the taxes already paid, which I didn't know last year.. you have to manually adjust it which is a bit of a PITA to figure out and document. Turns out I was double taxed to the tune of about a grand last year and have to file an amended return. TLDR - if you participate in an ESPP plan, don't go by the 1099 for the cost basis, you are screwing yourself.
  11. Just received from bobinhouston in my email: I didn't change my password and my prior password is still the same (I logged out and back in to be certain). I also have a decently difficult pwd to crack. Posting here assuming the notification was sent in error and so as not to flood Bob's inbox if others had the same thing occur..
  12. Team minivan here. I don't really understand the requirements for something bigger than a sedan if you already have a big SUV and this would be your DD for work. But whatever.. your parameters describe a class of vehicles called crossovers, of which there are a ton. Every mfg has at least one. If your wife will be driving it, I'd opt for something w all the latest safety features.
  13. I would recommend a more general focus CS program than something specifically focusing on information systems or data science or something. You need to learn all the theory and basics to give you a good foundation for the continuous learning you need to do to stay relevant in whatever sub fields there are. I went through the CS program 20 years ago, and very little I learned was on-the-job immediately practical. But all of it gave me the basics to understand, reason, apply logic, problem solving strategies, etc. which is really what you need to be able adapt to an ever changing landscape.
  14. I think Bryan Devendorf is such a subtely great drummer. One of my favorites.
