  1. Biden has already promised to put a black woman in. Similar to the VP nom, this decision will be based purely on sex and race. I still find it hilarious that saying "I will only hire a person of X gender and X race" is considered "progressive".
  2. I don't think it can be anything other than a minority woman nomination. Any other choice would have the far left up in arms, that's all Biden has left in his small corner of support.
  3. Yes, because those allegations were absolute fucking bullshit.
  4. Yeah, that isn't cool. Darts should never be used. That is some sadistic asshole. And part of the reason I am not a fan of archery in general. I've killed hundreds of deer with various rifles and never wounded one. Injured/lost deers are sadly a lot more common with archery equipment.
  5. Zero risk? What happens when some broke dick with a bunch of loans dies or stops paying? They get a judgment they can't collect? I am fine with that as a going forward measure. Access to loans will be significantly reduced.
  6. You mean the last 400 years that have been the best 400 years of the billions this plant has existed? The 400 years where our country became a superpower and the greatest place to ever live? Let's tear that all down.
  7. Schilling not getting in for his political opinions is bullshit. He is an easy yes for anyone with any sense. Bonds in Clemens should be in. Plenty of roiders are in. Including two of my favorite Astros of all time. Most everyone was doing them in the 90s. And most everyone was doing untestable HGH for a period after they started testing for steroids.
  8. Don't like injuring deer. But whoever is doing this is providing some benefits, assuming not being reckless with shot and putting others in danger. And assuming meat is not wasted. Way too many deer in residential areas in that part of the state.
  9. Would be great leverage for some dickhead family member who was disinherited and otherwise has a factually and legally shitty claim to contest the will.
  10. Back to Biden: https://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/biden_administration/prez_track_jan26
  11. What is the point of forgiving loans when we will just be in the same place in ten years? Schools have gotten too expensive because of unbridled federal loans. They spend on ridiculous resort quality facilities (compare the average dorm or rec center from the 70s to what schools have now). The administrator to faculty ratio has exploded. The University of Texas does not need 100 full time employees in the diversity department. It's a make work program for people with shitty degrees. And students need to be smart about loans. There are reasonable in state options. You can start at a JUCO or community college. Choose a school in a low cost area. Work part-time. Don't get a liberal arts degree at some private or out of state public for 5 years and use loans for living, partying, and tuition while racking up $250k in debt. A whole lot of kids would be better off learning a trade or technical skill.
  12. According to the listing, $157k per year. https://chassmiddleton.com/land-for-sale/6666-ranch
  13. NY murders are down as the poors cannot afford to live there. And poor people commit murder more than rich people do. Manhattan used to have a lot of rough neighborhoods. It's now all some of the highest priced real estate in the world.
  14. Bet you are good with them micromanaging every employer's employment decisions.
  15. Football and greek life are important to rich kids. It sucks the massive wealth and brain drain from Longhorn families to shitty SEC schools. We have to make our in state public options better.
  16. And Claytie promising to put juvenile criminals in camps to learn the joys of busting rocks.
  17. For murders, another factor was just better EMT services and trauma doctors/nurses keeping people who were shot alive. A lot was learned in Viet Nam. And it took some time for it to trickle down. Here is a twenty year old article on the subject that claims the homicide rate would be many times higher but for medical advances. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1124155/ The 80s and 90s had staggering homicide rates in big cities due to the crack epidemic. No doubt the war on drugs, which I disagree with, incarcerating so many people did impact murder rates.
  18. Never seen asset forfeiture to the government be a consequence of a will contest between putative heirs.
  19. Had the same experience litigating against my old firm and the partner I did the most work for around 2016. It was for a Big Law firm a relatively small litigation case -- max liability would have been around $10 million and was probably realistically about half that. On a case like that when I was there, they would have one partner and one associate. They had like 6 attorneys on the case. They spent 40 hours of attorney time on witness prep for a deposition we agreed to limit to 2 hours of testimony (the case entirely turned on a very narrow issue of contract interpretation). I was shocked then they produced their fee statements. Things had changed a lot since I left in 2010. The rates and the overbilling of hours was something I had never seen when I worked there. I think a lot of big firms litigation departments are hurting. There aren't a lot of cases that justify the billing rates but they have to charge them to at least have to try and keep close to what the corporate transaction guys charge. We had over 100 litigators in our Houston office when I was there. I think they have around 40 now.

  21. A good portion of people who are not vaccinated are at basically no risk from Covid. Younger people are less likely to be vaxxed. Kids do not need it.
  22. Anything over 2050 is pretty hard to do longterm. I hit just over 2,300 one year when I was single (but engaged) at a BigLaw. I actually hit that number in 11 months. I was taking a ton of depos that were easy billables and I had a large commercial arbitration (post-merger working capital adjustments) that I basically handled by myself. 2,300 got a pretty fat bonus but there was no incentive to bill more than 2,300. My arbitration finished about a month before our billing cycle ended and got me right over 2,300. I took all of October off. Got married that month and took a two-week honeymoon to St Barts. Had I not been in St Barts, I probably would be retired right now. Had a case a family friend wanted to refer to my wife. They could not reach me as I did not have cell service there and was not checking emails (this was 15 years ago). It turned out to be a $25 million dollar settlement in a workplace quadriplegia matter. I've made more money referring cases out than I have practicing. That one plus other referrals would have got me to my number. Most in-house jobs I come across are for transactional attorneys.
  23. When I was a little kid before we had our own place, our family leased some Briscoe land in the early 80s. It was in Dimmitt County, IIRC. Think Crystal City was the closest town. What I remember about that place was the ponds had alligators. I have been on ranches with alligators since then. Ranchers put them in the tanks because they walk around the bottom and compact the mud bottom so it holds water better. They will have small foot high fences that keep gators in but allow livestock and game easy access to the water. Briscoe's place had no fences. So you would be see alligators walking between tanks in brush or on roads.
  24. 85% of American adults have had at least one shot.
