Third row behind the Army dugout with my Dad and BIL. Army had a good, disciplined team and after they pulled ahead, I thought we might have another game on Monday. Cameron said No.

I enjoyed the mid game dugout interview with their coach.
”these kids are going to be warriors - we recruit carnivores only”
“we are buffaloes and we run toward the storm, not away like cows.” (Not sure if that was a hit at longhorn)
”these kids are raised from 18 to be men then warriors…these kids are either going to be saving lives or taking lives”
”catcher and left fielder are gonna be flying jets someday….ya know these kids just wanna put warheads on foreheads.” (My fave)
So the second Service Academy team I have gotten to see the Horns play. Too bad we can't/don't play an Academy every year.
If you weren't at the game, you might have missed a few things that TV or definitely the radio didn't have.
Air Force at Attention and Saluting during the National Anthem.
Maybe a sign that this BS Covid crap is finally coming to an end, but a great show of sportsmanship post game with handshakes ( DEFINITELY missing in sports the last 2 years) and congrats after the walkoff....
And what I thought was the best, much like singing last during Army-Navy.....Air Force doffed their hats, faced the Horns and crowd while quietly standing behind the mound during the EYES played after the game. GREAT RESPECT.
While walking out, I went down to the third base line where family and friends of AF players were gathering and was able to get a couple of pics of their CF Covin (Flower Mound) and their 1B Kulasingam (North Carolina). You could really tell they were having fun and this most likely was a nice break for them. Both were representing my last base while in the service, McChord AFB in Washington. 🤘🇺🇸

Go MULES!

I grew up on those fields - Pony, Colt, & Little leagues.
Coolio. What schools you go to?
Dad worked civil service at Kelly.
I grew up in the area of Ingram and Callahan Rds. Went to Sul Ross Jr High (with my older brother at Holmes) for a year and then we moved to Boerne when I was in 7th grade. Great small town, (boring) place to grow up as a kid in the 70s. Have plenty of school friends that still live there but it is too damned crowded and Californicated for me now. My mom still has their house (same one) there, but my sis and I will sell it when she is gone.

Ha! 😁 We've shared the same dirt.
Olmos Park served as our home field when I played JUCO ball in SA.

Doesn't Hodo's dad have a baseball clinic in the Boerne area or did at one time ?
He was one of the original guys to set up The Dugout of Boerne ( I believe Berkman may have been or was involved in one time too as he has a home/property in the Boerne area also). Russell is still listed as an instructor there. Batting cages and other instruction for teams and individuals. Russell is also involved with Lone Star Baseball Club.

I was at ACU for that year. Everyone thinks the girls there are prudes, but I found exactly the opposite to be true. Most of those girls had been under their parents’ thumbs all of their lives and couldn’t wait to have a little freedom. I spent my year there getting as many of them as I could to let me help them experience that freedom…mostly freedom from their bras and panties. On 3/28/2022 at 7:31 PM, mooseoutfront said:That was my experience too. And all the girls from ACU seemed to be at least 8's or higher. Unreal the talent there.
Ok, you two assholes are bringing back some pleasurable memories of my youth! To get drunk, you went to Graham's Central Station...to chase the hotties (with their pent up horniness) from ACU, you went to Stairs.... Good times, young Airman at Dyess. March 83-October 84.

I wasn’t aware that he was a solid footballer in high school.
Batted .510 with eight home runs and 27 RBI as a senior, earning first-team all-district, first-team All-Area San Antonio Super Team and first-team all-state as a third baseman.Russell was pretty much All everything in high school. He also was the State player of the year (baseball) for 4A-5A as a senior. He still holds plenty of records for Boerne and was inducted to the school's Athletic Hall of Honor in '20. His dad played for Tech while in college and was one of my teachers and also one of my baseball coaches when I went to school there in Boerne.
Russell is passing on what he learned from his dad and is involved (instructing/coaching) with a business and a club(s) in Boerne that helps youth that want to get better or up to the next level. 🤘

As long as we are bagging on Pierce and fretting about our best players being missing…. It occurs to me that the 6 best things on this club basically fell into Pierce’s lap.
1. Melendez. He was recommended to Pierce by a ex-player here who saw the Juco bombs he was hitting first hand. The name of the ex-player escapes me.
2. Tulowitzki. Huston Street told Pierce Tulo wanted a job at Texas.
3. Hansen. Hansen recruited Texas, not the other way around.
4. Kennedy. His brother played for Augie.
5. Stevens. He recruited himself to Texas.
6. Stehley. Altobelli RIP (former Pierce teammate) coached and recommended this kid.
Omar Quintinilla was the one that recommended him. Both from El Paso and he had seen him play.

Probably dumb questions but what does this actually look like? Just having more flexibility to hand out more "academic" scholarships on top of the 11.7 allowed by the NCAA?
Regarding admission hurdles, I'm assuming it's institutional rules (not NCAA) that defines how many players we can bring in who wouldn't meet academic standards as a regular student? Is that a number we are privy to?
I've been wondering about this. I hadn't seen any news on baseball deals other than something with Last Stand Hats. Are our guys actually making meaningful NIL money right now?
Vandy has been doing this for years and while other schools (with large endowments) can too, they have definitely been using it to their advantage. Texas could too, but other sports (Title IX) would be chirping for that money also. NIL will eventually level the field on what Vandy has been doing to stregthen them against the SEC and the rest of the nation.
Here is a better explanation:
www.postandcourier.com/sports/college/ncaas-new-baseball-scholarship-rules-will-help-some-colleges-more-than-others/article_391e1c66-d59b-11ea-8b0c-0393de0a1bfc.html
Note in particular this part of the article:
"In 2008, Vanderbilt created “Opportunity Vanderbilt,” which promised that any student who was admitted to the school would not be prevented from attending due to cost of tuition. The school looked at each student’s family income, how much it could reasonably provide for their child to attend Vanderbilt, and subtracted that from the regular cost (Vanderbilt’s tuition for the 2018-19 school year was over $70,000).
In essence, the cost of attendance was what the student and their family could afford. Some complained that it helped Vanderbilt get players through that program while allowing the school to use its 11.7 scholarships for other players.
It wasn’t that simple, as if a player chose Vanderbilt because of the school’s financial aid, he couldn’t partake in athletic aid. Yet Vandy has won two College World Series titles in the past six years and Corbin called it an advantage in a recent interview with The Athletic.
“We have more of an inroad to a kid that is (in a) lower economic (situation) who wants to be here, can be here because of his economic situation,” Corbin said. “Does it hurt us? Yeah, because we don’t get every kid we want. But you also understand, it is an advantage for us, there is no doubt.”
Vanderbilt is a private school and has that advantage over every other school in the SEC. And now it can mix and match school and athletic financial aid, much like other private schools can (Stanford, Tulane, Miami, etc.).
The schools with the biggest endowments will benefit the most but all coaches will have the same opportunity. They can tell a prospect that he can receive aid from the school with academic scholarships, Pell grants and/or loans and they can also get some money from the pool of 11.7 scholarships.
Yet not many schools have the kind of endowments that can fund numerous academic initiatives.
“People that had this idea that this is going to hurt Vandy or even the playing field are sadly mistaken,” Rogers said. “Vandy now has another avenue to bolster the scholarships and a guy could essentially be a walk-on getting a full ride. If anything, it helps schools like Vanderbilt.” -

Saw my cousin this weekend and her youngest recently finished ranger training and they have to do a night jump to qualify. His main chute didn’t open (did a cigar? roll). He cut it away and deployed the backup chute and it did the same thing.
All he got was a mild concussion. He then completed his night jump 2 weeks later when he cleared concussion protocol. Doesn’t remember the last part of the descent. Doctors said he probably blacked out at between 1000 and 2000 feet so was completely limp when he hit. Apparently not super rare but a) holy shit and b) fuck jumping out of perfectly good airplanes esp 2 weeks after you almost die doing it.
He’s already been on a couple of deployments and of course can’t say where he went or what he was doing
Thank you to all on this thread for your and your family members’ service. Y’all will remain in my prayers
No such thing my friend. Especially if you are a paratrooper.

There's an old sitting in the first row behind our dugout. I sat next to him the 2nd day in Columbia. Said he hasn't missed a game in 23 years. /csb
You sat next to Scott Wilson….good dude.
He’s been highlighted for his support by the University and Texas Baseball.
With Away games , he ALWAYS leads the Eyes before and after the game.

So you’re implying he’s done pitching for Texas?
Nope. Not at all.
Some on here have him leaving after the draft next year. If he is already a shoe in for the draft ( with a high pick), he doesn't need to risk injury pitching for us in April or May next year. The surgery may be "routine " ( others quote, not mine) but rehab and getting back to where you were before (especially at this level or higher) is different for each person (see Duplantier).
I really hope he is back for '24. He's probably drafted next year whether he pitches for us or not. Others see him pitching for us in April of next year. I don't.

There is no 2024 for him at Texas. He is draft eligible next year and he will pitch for Texas next year so we can go in the top 5 rounds like we’ve expected all along.
Tommy John is a routine surgery nowadays. In the major leagues it’s 12-13 months and those teams are heavily invested in players so they are extra careful. Witt will be pitching for Texas next year.
The lineup that was out there today, is gone next year. We'll have a lot of holes to fill after this season and him pitching next April (12 months from surgery) to elevate his draft status is asinine.
Scouts can evaluate his workouts, speed, and pitches without him stepping onto the Disch. The coaching staff, UT, and most likely his family aren't going to be pushing for a 12 month return so he can be a top 5 round pick.

To be fair, 14 is somewhat close to 18. Assuming Witt underwent the surgery within a week or so of the announcement (3/10/22), that would have him ready by May, 2023 on a 14 month timetable. Let's even say sometime in late March/early April. With all due respect to Witt, he will be coming back to a hopefully high performing collection of starters, particularly the weekend guys. It is more likely he takes a role in the pen the last few months of the season and then is a weekend starter again in 2024.
I like your optimism, but his surgery was late March. He tweeted about it on April 1. He's not pitching for us next year. And there is no reason to burn a year by pitching a few innings in late May. 2024 at the earliest.

AE 25 came down in the middle of the street in front of United Regional in 2014. AE 34 was on the pad and watched it happen. When they went to get the crew out of the flames the flight nurse Leslie screamed at them to leave her. She knew she was already dead. She died 5 days later at Parkland.I remember that one happening. We would always do a Gap Analysis of mishaps once the NTSB report was out to make sure we weren't following the same path. Sometimes before reports were complete depending if it was in country or OCONUS.
In late 2008 (not a good yr for HEMS) I was offered a job by AE, luckily their pay was not desirable. Would've turned them down either way as I brought up a couple safety questions during the phone interview which didn't seem to go over well with the interviewer. Glad that it went that way.

DPS trooper buddy of mine has responded to two heli crashes, both were Robinsons. He was probably one of the DPS guys at that Manor/Elgin crash site investigation.
Most likely.
We were just working with their ground units that day as (of course) their birds were then and still are, always along the border. They had a generalized area where they knew it had gone down, but very rural and no roads. We got lucky and found it within half an hour. Bit sobering when you are looking for a similar aircraft as to what you flying around in. Nature of the beast.

In most of the Agusta and Bell birds used in air medical, the flight paramedic seat is the fuel tank, which ruptures and bursts into flames 10 out of 10 times in the event of a crash. Good stuff. Such fun.
Agusta is supposed to have fixed that but I don't believe they have completely (at least not for all EMS). Glad that I didn't have to fly in those (145s/169s). Knew a pilot that crashed in Colorado upon leaving the hospital pad and his burst into flames upon impact due to fuel tank rupturing. All three were able to get out but not before receiving massive burns. The pilot died a few days later. 😢
-
Mast bumping, or like others have said excessive torque due to pilot error or a simple negative G. I've known many that fly these and many get their hrs learning in them, but not for me.
Around 2011, we assisted DPS in looking for a Robinson that had crashed in the Manor/Elgin area. Flying the area that morning, we found the main rotor blade (fully intact) first, around 200 meters from the aircraft crash site where there wasn't much left (burned). The pilot was retired AFD if I remember correctly.
