  8. No biggie about not knowing, was just trying to pass that along. I served in the 80's, but wasn't positive about WW2 until I found some paperwork/pictures of a Great Uncle of mine that was Marine in the Pacific. His paperwork dating was the same as were some letters and the telegram (KIA) to my great grandmother. As for the show, I was trying to make out the handwriting too when first watching that episode but it was kinda small on my computer. I thought the lighter was funny also but it didn't dawn on me until @Whitewater Horn pointed it out. CSB//?? Concerning the French/Allies underground, I used to work with a guy (and went to medic school with) in our Fire Dept. that we gave crap to regarding his French heritage (surrenders/never fired rifles/ha ha etc). He took all the kidding in good stride. He was a good cook as that it was his dad did with owning his own restaurant. His dad passed a few years back. Included with his obituary were some links to articles about his dad not only being part of the French Underground during the war, but he was a high up leader that caused quite the problems for the Germans with assassinations of high ranking Officers/ blowing up of bridges and railways/ really helping out with D Day stuff and after. Dude had been a real badass during the war and had all types of medals from the French Government and the Allies. My buddy Gil had never told us those stories about his Dad.
  9. These tickets weren't included in my email...
  10. Cool that the show emphasized the counting of chutes....Even if only one chute was seen by other aircraft, EVERYONE on that plane was then listed as missing in the telegrams to NOK vs being "killed in action" I get that they wanted to point out something to show how the underground knew, but day, month, year for dates is correct for the US military.
  11. Not trying to take away from the show, but his service seems noting for the thread and site... Left UT after one semester to follow in his brother's footsteps of being a B17 pilot (brother lost ferrying his B17 to England somewhere in the North Atlantic around Iceland/never found) 30 missions in the 8th AF as a B17 co-pilot from November 44-April 45 with a crash landing in Belgium due to loss of fuel Returned to UT after the war, playing football as a full back and defensive back. Degree and T Ring in 1949. Did some cool things as a player and Coach in the NFL after. Longhorn Legend 🤘 Tom Landry
  12. That same thing happened in the movie Memphis Belle (dude falling from a 17 in front and without a chute on)
  13. 24's and 17's were NOT pressurized. Huge openings for those waist gunners 🤷‍♂️ B29's that flew in the Pacific theater were the first mass produced pressurized (by design) bomber. Year is 1943....The G model with the chin turret was end of '44-early 45. And that wasn't us at first. The Brits did that when the early models that we produced specifically for and gave them performed poorly with the Allison engines (no high altitude supercharger) at higher altitudes. The Brits used those first 51's for low altitude (below 15000 ft) fighters and reconnaisance . They experimented with the Rolls Royce Engine first with some of them, had the North American plants (and Packard) here in the US start producing them with the new powerplants instead of the Allison's and the rest is history. Yep, more 24's were produced and argument could be made for stronger contributor for dropping bombs (bigger payload), the 24 probably doesn't get the love due to the survival factor. The Liberators had a higher chance of catching fire and and the high wing to the fuselage made it hard to survive ditching or crash landings. The wings also departed from the aircraft due to the higher wing when hit by flak. About 20 years ago I had the chance to get inside both a 17 (the one that crashed last yr) and a 24 when they came to the Tacoma Narrows Airport. $20 to tour inside both. Surprising how little room there was in each and I am not a big guy (5'9) More surprising though was that the 24 was a much bigger airframe, but there was even less room INSIDE than what the 17 seemed to have. I thought then and still do now it would have been much more difficult to get our of a stricken 24 than a 17. Good reading for the 24 is Stephen Ambroses book The Wild Blue. Does a great job of covering George McGovern (who never exploited this when running for president) and his time flying 24s out of Italy. Little different also noted with him is that you flew with different people and crews each flight where as the 8th and 17's, crews stayed the same unless killed or wounded.
  14. There isn't. Gonna need some pitching and freshman fielders to step up and still get production from the vets. Hopefully we are ALL pleasantly surprised by a production like last year. Be ready and play the games hard. Good things will happen. 🤘
