  1. I don’t oppose them for political reasons, I oppose them because they don’t care about sports. ASU fans seem pretty happy with the move, and even Utah fans have quickly changed their tune. Cal and Stanford would have all of administrative snobbery of ASU/Utah, with absolutely nothing to bring to revenue sports.
  2. Weezer had two great albums, one decent album, and have been shoveling shit at the world for over 20 years at this point. It's amazing how my view of Pinkerton's greatness changed the minute I got laid for the first time (it's still pretty great, but it's definitely got heavy incel vibes).
  3. I don't want to drag to CR into this, but look at who runs the state government and ask yourself if they're going to start giving educational institutions more money. A lot of people in this state want these schools to play each other as much as possible. Until very recently Iowa and Iowa State would travel to Northern Iowa and Drake for basketball. Hell, Iowa and Iowa State didn't want to play each other in football, until the legislature forced them to in 1977. Then Iowa tried to insist they shouldn't have to go to Ames, and of course ISU said they wouldn't travel to Iowa City unless there was a return trip to Ames. There's a lengthy history of political insistence on these institutions competing against each, and I do think the majority of Iowans prefer this arrangement. I love it in theory, but hate it in practice.
  4. I would love to get rid of FCS games, but I believe our BOR, which governs all 3 of Iowa's public universities (ISU, Iowa, and Northern Iowa) puts a ton of pressure on ISU and Iowa to make sure Northern Iowa plays at least one of them (some years both of them) on annual basis. Mostly to help subsidize UNI's athletic department with the buy game. My guess is Campbell and Ferentz would love to quit playing the Panthers. Being as they always play us tough (actually win about 30% of the time lately), and my wife/in-laws are huge UNI fans/alumni, I would personally be fine with never playing them again in anything.
  5. Now that I have time to address it fully... Pork Tornadoes are a fucking hoot, and kind of a state treasure. Everyone loves those guys, and when they come to town it's always a party. The name is as "Iowa" as you can get without working in a corn reference. Hoping your pork consumption included a stop at Mr. Pork Chop. He does 'em right. South of Highway 30, Iowa's almost entirely rolling hills. The truly flat part is the area north of Highway 30 and west of Highway 63 (I hail from this part of the state originally). There are some hilly pockets in there (the Loess Hills in far western Iowa, which you rode in while leaving Sioux City), but it's generally level. The northern RAGBRAI routes are much flatter in general than the central and southern routes. Except the last days of the northern route, which end in the Driftless Area (similar to the Ozarks, with less elevation). Ankeny is milf central. All the Des Moines suburbs really. The way small towns turn out and support the event is one of my favorite parts of RAGBRAI. It's a reminder that while our state politics have devolved into spite and cruelty, Iowans still are, on a personal level, the salt of the earth and good people.
  6. At large playoff bids will come down to brand, like they always do. A 1 loss TCU is getting in over a 3 loss Ole Miss. They aren't getting in over a 3 loss Bama. Same applies to the Big 10. If it's Minnesota, Iowa, Purdue, etc with 3 losses, they have almost no chance of getting in over a 1 loss Big 12 non-champ. 3 loss Ohio State and 3 loss Michigan will always get consideration. It has nothing to do with strength of schedule or quality of wins.
  7. Your argument applies to the SEC, but most of the Big 10 is worse on the field than the Big 12. Their position is based on brand and fanbase size, not results for the most part. The Big 10 champ lost to a Big 12 team in the playoffs. The last place team in the Big 12 beat an 8 win Big 10 team on the road. It’s a wealthier more prestigious conference. It hasn’t really been better than the Big 12 on the field.
  8. Yes, I would watch the 1-16 league. If there was a 40 team league my school was out of, I wouldn’t watch it much. Yes, 17-70 feels more inclusive because you don’t have Indiana’s and Vanderbilt’s ahead of OK State and ISU. Like I said, my resentment isn’t about the blue bloods getting together, it’s about the schools more on our level getting to go along for the ride. I’m torn about whether or not I would prefer this to the current situation. There’s things to like about both. What really intrigues me is the possibility of geographical realignment in the top 16 split scenario. ISU could easily find itself in a grouping with Iowa, KU, KSU, Mizzou, OK State, Minnesota, Illinois, etc
  9. I don’t think the ACC will exist in a decade, and this a main reason that KU won’t get a Big 10 invite. There are at least 4 ACC schools that fit better with what the Big 10 is doing than they do, and provide more financial upside.
  10. I wonder if there’s an internet belief that the Big 12 will go to 10 conference games to provide inventory? There’s a lot of talk in Iowa of both the Big 10 and Big 12 going to 10 conference games and the CyHawk game dying as a result.
  11. The Big 10 and SEC aren’t adding any of the current Big 12 schools. That’s why they’re in the Big 12, and it’s also what’s made the Big 12 stable.
  12. Awesome. We have jalapeños, you just have to ask unfortunately!
  13. I’ve been in love with the deer lady ever since Tanis showed up in Letterkenny
  14. I have no idea, and honestly I've only met one Iowa fan in my life who actually claims it. I'm not saying the AD should turn it down. If they sent one of these to ISU, you're god damn right our AD would claim it, although as a fan, especially 60 years after the fact, it wouldn't mean anything to me. And the vast majority of Iowa fans I know find it meaningless to them.
  15. The Big 12 should have awarded trophies for winning the round robin AND the CCG. We do a regular season champ and tournament champ in basketball. Football has been in the same boat since the CCG started, but only the winner of the rematch gets a trophy. The last 3 round robin winners have lost the CCG against a team they’d previously beaten and its horse shit they get nothing to show for it.
  16. That’s the same shit that’s been going on basically forever, to me. I don’t see that as a drastic change. It’s 2014 playoffs redux
  17. And Iowa does NOT have 5 national titles. They have one heavily disputed one from the 50’s, where LSU won the AP poll and had a better record. Very similar to the OK State disputed title.
  18. Agreed. It’s better to have a little fat in terms of uninvested fanbases than to leave out a school that’s trying to compete with fans who care because they didn’t grow up in the right neighborhood
  19. Every Big 12 school can make the playoff by winning the league, currently. If only Big 10 and SEC schools got in, the Big 12 would be relegated. That hasn’t happened yet. If the TV networks force there to be 40 schools with playoff access, based on current Big 10 and SEC membership, the bulk of the Big 12 and ACC would be relegated, and those fanbases would heavily punch out.
  20. Minnesota has no fanbase. Nobody cares about college football in that state. Iowa’s clearly a better program, but they are closer to being us than they are to being a blue blood. I picked those schools because they are the closest to me.
  21. Exactly. It wouldn’t even bother me if the Top 16 revenue generators got together and made their own super league and left 17-70 with our own division. I realize that Texas and Iowa State are very different things. I resent that Iowa and Minnesota never have to go through the same existential dread that we’ve been facing for over a decade. Forget it, he’s rolling.
  22. You’re going to have to explain. When I say “relegated” I don’t mean “taking a pay cut”. I mean not being granted playoff access. If you make it so the bulk of the current Big 12 programs have no way to make the playoffs, those fans aren’t going to care about watching the schools that do. As a fan of an Irate 8 school, I’m pretty pumped about the current arrangement, and I no longer hold ill will against UT or OU for leaving. I did at one time, but as reasonable people are known to do, I changed my mind as the situation changed. But you know, you’re not allowed to charge your opinion nowadays. I am still concerned about some lingering desire to actually relegate a large chunk of the sport going forward, but for now life is good.
  23. Miami fans punch out the second they slip. NCSU fans are consistently tuned in. The SEC would own Florida with FSU, and currently has no presence in North Carolina.
  24. We are though, and that’s what someone like you really doesn’t get. We know we aren’t blue bloods and don’t expect a blue blood paycheck. We weren’t pissed when Texas left because we as fans cared about some gravy train, we were pissed because we thought we would get shut out from playing for a championship, arbitrarily. That’s what we as fans care about. You’re assigning your priorities as a Texas fan to us. You guys care about playing blue bloods, and having the same or more resources than those other blue bloods. We care about playing schools that we have history with, and having a seat at the table. Right now, everyone has what they actually want. And Texas and OU didn’t leave because the Irate 8 were bad conference members that held them back. The difference between Big 10 cohesion and Big 12 dysfunction was that a million years ago, Ohio State and Michigan got on the same page and stayed there. The Big 12 was a shotgun marriage with the big dogs from two other conferences battling each other for control and never developing institutional trust. When some of those big dogs bailed, the league was never going to generate the revenue, exposure, and big matchups that UT and OU sought.
