    Holy shit.

Did the pylon separation rip open the fuel bladder in the wing and then ignite it?

wouldn’t one consider it an engineering flaw for one engine to be located behind the other two, making it more likely that a catastrophic engine failure from a wing engine would affect the tail engine?

I don’t think the engine failure being caused by the engine completely departing the airplane, or an un contained blade failure in the case of a 4 engine aircraft, and the subsequent collateral damage are considered when designing the aircraft to fly after losing a motor.

It’s assumed that there’s a simple loss of power, and all the big pieces are still attached to the plane.

I do NOT want to go cloak room on this.  I really just want to know if you think airports are such important infrastructure to the public that they should be paid during shutdowns?

And do you think that Private Jets (low passenger counts) should or should not have the same access to the flight path as commercial airlines during periods of flight restrictions?

My personal feeling is yes, they should be paid as the overall threat to economic activity, makes me feel like Air traffic controllers are essential.  Conversely, I think that the first flights to lose access to the flight path should be private planes.  Simply as their are a lot of alternative landing places for smaller airlines, that could be utilized.  The same cannot be said for commercial airlines.  I just think you start off restricting the flights with the fewest passengers is the most logical way to manage such a crisis in the future.

You understand that the smaller airports still often have air traffic control towers, and that even if the private jets were to land and depart from uncontrolled airports that they’d have to get clearances and services to operate above 18,000 and near mid to large towered airports?

Private jets don’t just takeoff, talk to no one and then land without ATC services.

  3. Also, old is a relative term for an airplane. Cycles of pressurizations,  takeoffs and landings, and maximum power applications are more limiting than pure hours not unlike the difference in road miles on a car versus stop and go driving. A long haul plane like an MD-11 will typically have many hours, but relatively fewer cycles than a smaller narrow body domestic airliner like a 737 or A320. On the latter the cycles to hours ratio often runs a little more than 3:1 with an 80k hour airframe having 30k cycles whereas a wide body jet might be 5-6:1 or better.

Google tells me the last md-11 was built in 2000, so that airframe is at least 25 years old.  Is that old for a plane with the hours it likely has put in? Would key items like engines have been replaced at prescribed intervals?

Generally speaking, unless something suffers a catastrophic failure, the engines last as long as the planes. They get overhauls, regular inspections and cleanings, but don’t get replaced  on any kind of 100,000 mile power train warranty program or anything.

In fact, they’re often leased, as are the airframes, in power by the hour agreements.

One of the reasons turbine engines are so reliable and long lasting despite extremes in temperature and pressure is that they just spin. No cylinders etc reversing direction thousands of times per minute to induce wear. They tend to last a long, long time if cared for.

So let me see if this sounds right/plausible.

#1 has an uncontained fan failure, sheers off and debris shreds the other engine on the wing. While that engine is failing the hole from #1 is spraying jet fuel all over the tarmac and everything else.

Plane impacts the plant at the end of the runway and flash fire ignites all the fuel trail and we get the apocalypse now napalm fire ball from the clip up top?

It looks like the tail mounted engine is having compressor stalls right as the plane rotates.

WTF? At the end of the 2 hours of maintenance, did the “check to make sure you reattached the engine” box not get checked?

Un contained failure of the fan section possibly produce enough imbalance to torque the thing off?

You can see that the fan is not attached to the engine core laying on the airport.

  7. 1 hour ago, HiggyBaby said:

The airplane should still be able to fly on the two remaining engines, so whatever happened disabled that ability. Absolutely tragic.  We train for this all the time so I’m sure they were busy planning to get airborne and come back around to land .  May have only gotten an engine fire indication, not knowing how massive it really was.

i’m fairly confident you’re wrong. If there are 100 factors that led to this tragedy, I’m sure ATC shortage is 101. That said I don’t doubt this will be politicized to the extreme.

Perhaps the engine departure and resulting fire destroyed the leading edge devices, or enough of them anyway, to preclude the wing generating enough lift. Kinda like, only kinda, the AA DC-10 in Chicago.

We also have a thread in the CR that was started in 2019, which has grown to 89 pages, where folks on the very first page talk about not giving a shit whose "team" gets caught up in the Epstein scandal so long as guilty parties are punished. Your personal lack of give-a-shit there, too, is also noted.

Your aggressively defensive indignation, including personal insults such as the one quoted above, didn't get going until one of those "teams" actually began actively blocking the public release of information. And then, you suddenly decide to come out and start attacking the "team" that wants the files to see daylight.

I hope you can see how your claim to be on the "team" of justice and transparency rings oh-so-fucking-hollow.

The personal insults start when the barking seals exit the CR and shit on everything they touch. They see only one thing.

Your remarkably stupid supposition that one does not care about a subject just because one does not participate in a Surly thread about it received well earned scorn.

The fact that you think that was a real gotcha is sad.

The most likely scenario is that the "file" contains names of people who Epstein associated with and/or who flew with him and/or visited the island, but nothing to establish that they had sex with minors. He liked having rich and powerful friends, it's not like he only associated with pedophiles. So yeah, if there isn't enough evidence to support prosecutions, the result would be that nothing is said about it because the investigation files are generally not public unless they lead to prosecutions. And LOL that any of this is about "child predators." It was always performative to score political points by promising that if you elect him he'd expose a bunch of leftist pedophiles. He's now saying those files never existed and his political enemies created a hoax. It's fucking laughable. I think he should be held to account for that lie and if it leads to insinuations that he's in fact the pedophile, so be it, that's the game he set up. It's again clear that you believe the dems covered up a pedophile ring because that's the narrative you were told to believe. You are the exact type of gullible mark that won them the election. Congratulations.

Yay team. Don’t forget your devotional at 7pm.

For the record, we have a 24-page thread about shaming pedophiles, yet I don't recall you ever posting in that one. Hell, this thread is 3 years old, and your first post here wasn't until Sunday. So, based on your lack of posting history about the topic, it seems that you didn't start giving a shit until very recently, for whatever reason.

Don’t go outside without a helmet.

@TwiceHorn has explained a number of times why this wouldn’t happen, but your “both sides” schtick requires you to believe that the Biden administration was incapable of following prosecutorial ethics and norms. It’s telling that you’re so hung up on accusing the left of “performative bs” and ignoring that, even if that’s the case, it’s in response to years of performative bs from trump and co. saying for years that the list exists and that he would release them and expose a bunch of leftist pedophiles. Again, please answer why they should just let it go and not respond in kind? Performative bs won them control of all three branches of government. Why do you insist that the left should not respond in kind unless your ultimate objective is for them to keep losing elections? All the data shows that the American electorate at large cares only about performative bs.

    There are two possibilities:

    1. The information is so damning for all in involved that no one wants to produce the details of the investigation.

    2. The investigation produced nothing outside of the need to jail Epstein and Maxwell ( which is also what Trump is saying once you dig past the hoax nonsense). That outcome is preferable to believing that our elites, power brokers and celebs aren’t debauched assholes sexually abusing minors.

It is difficult to believe that the DOJ’s investigation has produced nothing of consequence 6 years after Epstein was arrested. You might be able to pull the “its standard procedure to not reveal any information during an investigation” in year one, two or three. 6 years later, 5 and a half years to Trump’s second inauguration, and nothing? Zilch? Nada?

It is no stretch at all to assume the Biden Administration and any department under it was capable of fucking anything up btw.

Yes, I can see “performative BS” has stuck in your craw. So much so that you’re not even trying to deny the Dems are using it. Making no issue of this at all, or even trying to counter it in anyway while the Trump campaign at least loudly hinted about pursuing it, is the Dems failure. Making a stink about it now that it’s politically expedient to stage a vote in Congress that they knew they were going to lose is the definition of performative. Showing any hint of caring about this before the recent vote might have assuaged such accusations, but the Dems gave no fucks about it, and now are trying to hide behind DOJ procedure. How many times has Ro Khana taken to the House floor to push for the release of the Epstein files once the investigation was complete in the last year? Two years? I have a sneaking suspicion the answer is pretty close to zero. As in zero fucks given.

You can take your “both sides” BS back to your house of worship in the CR. There should be only one side you care about when it comes to child predators. Instead you’re trying scoreboard BS because you don’t actually give a fuck about it other than a way for “Yay team” to advance itself politically.

What if it’s true (which I believe is the most likely scenario)? You’re railing on “performative bullshit” from the left, meanwhile the right won elections through “performative bullshit” insisting that the list exists and that all their political rivals were pedophiles. It worked. Our stupid as fuck electorate has proven they only care about performative bullshit. You still think the “left” should back down and take the high road? Do what prez says and just forget about it after all the bs from the last election cycle? Sounds like you just want them to keep losing elections which is why people are treating you like maga. This is the country we live in, there is no reason for the left to just step aside, even if it is largely performative at this point. He created this conspiracy, make him stew in it, for as long as possible.

There’s zero chance that Trump was involved in this and the progs running Biden’s administration wouldn’t leak it unless the dirt on their own was so bad that it wasn’t worth it to go for the big fish.

It’s either mutually assured destruction or they have nothing on Trump.

I don’t give a shit about the rest of that. This is the thread about exposing pedos. Or, as you noted, making it clear that there was nothing beyond Maxwell and Epstein.

    8 hours ago, B00M said:

If the dems had released the documents prior to the election and there was evidence that Trump fucked a bunch of kids, would any of his supporters believe it? Absolutely not. Perhaps justifiably, it would have been seen as politically motivated bullshit. You know, just another witch hunt. The only way it will be seen as believable to his base is if it emerges during his administration.

They would have believed it if it also took down other big names from the left, powerbrokers and maybe a Royal or two. No, it wouldn’t be believe if the names were just Epstein, Maxwell and Trump.

I'll root for the team that's not actively protecting child rapists, thanks. The Dems don't care who is included in the potential friendly fire, and I'm happy to see that. Bill Clinton is definitely in there, and I would have no problem seeing him locked away for life. I would imagine other Dems in office are also going to be caught up in it, and quite a few Republicans too, many actively serving in this administration.

I would expect the party of "morals" and "law and order" would want to see justice for the Epstein sex trafficking and rape victims, but as you can see above, 220 of them couldn't even bother to vote for a ceremonial nudge to make the criminals names public. We can't even get this administration to say there is an active investigation that would be impacted by the release. Instead it's all misdirection and pretending it doesn't exist, or it's a "hoax." It all just screams "I'm guilty" for Trump, and he should go down for it. Probably won't happen, but we can all dream.

You root for the team that gave no fucks about this until it was politically expedient to make a show in Congress on a vote they knew they would lose. Wow. Way to really step out there.

You’re still playing “my team” and pointing to a scoreboard when there’s only those for exposing the pedos and those against it. For the record. I would love to see some of the crazies on the right join with the Dems to force the issue, but they don’t want it out any more than the Dems do. Circuses and cake. Hope you got some icing.

  12. 3 minutes ago, Dutchrudder said:

Odd, it would appear that 210 Dems 'in power' in the House want it released.  Not that this resolution would be binding or anything anyways, but it is funny that the R's were able to find just 1 more vote than the Dems had present to shut this down, and then let some of their people not vote on it to save face or something.

    image.thumb.png.531487e6b29eb32d9fef220862a1eca5.png

It's interesting who didn't vote for the R's, since every one of these people won their district easily. I wonder why they don't vote to release the files?  What are they scared of?  Trump/Bondi/Patel would ignore this resolution if it passed anyways.

During a recent House vote on a procedural measure related to the release of Jeffrey Epstein files (Roll Call 195 on H. Res. 580), Nine Republicans abstained from voting:
    Andy Ogles (TN)
    Michael McCaul (TX)
    Thomas Massie (KY)
    Barry Loudermilk (GA)
    Wesley Hunt (TX)
    Morgan Lutrell (TX)
    Mark Green (TN)
    Monica De La Cruz (TX)
    Buddy Carter (GA)

I see you’re trying to claim scoreboard like some of the other zealots here.

Odd, I don’t recall the Dems amassing 200 votes to try to push for the release of the investigation’s information just 7 months ago. I guess they juuussssttt wrapped it up as Trump was sworn in, and couldn’t get it over the finish line.

Quit playing “Yay team” and realize that no one in Washington, and probably a few other power circles and capitals world wide wants this released.

    The complete non-answer is acknowledged.

Can we agree that you limit your concern for the children to the teenage females that Epstein so horribly abused, and you don’t buy into some democratic Cabal that lives to drink the life force from children?

    You know, as a start?

Some questions aren’t worth an answer.

The only conspiracy that I’ve posited is that Jeffrey Epstein trafficked minors sexually, possibly as a deviant or some sort of financial operative, and that there’s probably a lot of people who don’t want that information made public. I’ve been pretty clear that I think it applies across the political spectrum.

Or we can suppose that in several decades of such behavior in places where he made sure he had plenty of surveillance that only he and his number one did anything worth jail time, and that it hasn’t been revealed because of the ongoing investigation.

Why make all these claims about the files only to have some of the most vocal critics appointed to the FBI then backtrack on those claims?

Why did the Trump administration doctor the footage of Epstein's jail cell and try to present it as evidence?

I would think a semi-normal person, such as yourself, would have the same questions and many more. It would appear to me, a normal guy who is not a fan of a child rapists, that this is a cover up. It seems that Trump himself does not want the files about all the child rapes and sex slavery released either. Why he doesn't want to release it is just a mystery we may never solve...

I have no questions. It appears Trump and company are actively trying to suppress any information they have. Which, if you’ve read any of the thread  has been a theme. Nobody in power or who held power wants it released.
