At the NW corner of 290 and Jones is a small strip center with a Starbucks at one end and a breakfast taco place at the other. The name escapes me, but I can find it if interested. They close at 2pm or something but they have great tacos and a constant stream of customers. That should work for you. For BBQ at dinner, your best bet probably "is" Rudy's. BBQ in these parts is pretty much breakfast and lunch. It's all dried out by dinner. As for Truth BBQ, you're probably as close to the Brenham location as the Houston one, time wise. Traffic is about the same but at least it's all going the same direction.
  2. People lose their jobs in Hollywood based on their political opinions. His personal negligence killed somebody. I swear,...this place sometimes....
  3. Loved Rita's. My son went to Stratford so we were there often. The move up to Westheimer killed them and even though several other restaurants have been in that center for a long time, there have been a plethora in that end space where Rita's went. None more than a few months. Pita+ Cafe was Bosnian. Loved that place. Knew the owners Bobo and Omer. Bobo sold out and moved up north. Omer kept it going and expanded into the Galleria area on Richmond. Proved just too much. Hoe Sai Gai, San Felipe and Post Oak. For my fourteenth or fifteenth birthday, or somewhere around there, my family met there for a BD lunch. There were probably eight to ten of us. We had a big round table with a lazy susan and everyone ordered a dish and shared. We had soup and egg rolls and fried rice and all of the overly sweet dishes that were prevalent then. The check comes and my late uncle says everyone can just give him cash and he'd put it on his card. We're in the parking lot saying goodbyes to each other and the manager and the waiter come running out screaming at us. "Only $2 tip? Why only $2 tip?". We never went back. Almost fifty years later and it's still a family joke. It comes up multiple times a year. Great memories.
  4. I saw that. The player got it right, and then Ken said disgustedly, "Yeah, the Astros". I'm guessing he's not a fan.

    Jeff Beck RIP

    Here's a pretty good show:
  6. Has anyone found the rest of this roll call? For research purposes of course.
  7. They usually fill multiple orders on each cart ... ...when they're open.
  8. New York City? Get a rope!!
  9. Salsa Macha Not at all what you're looking for, but I ran across this over the holidays and made a "half batch". It's more like a Chinese chili crisp with olive oil and chipotle instead of peanut oil and Szechuan peppercorns, (though to be honest I did add a few grinds of the Szechuans to the mix). I've had it on breakfast tacos, chicken tacos, roast beef sandwich, etc. It's different for sure, but I like it. Edited to add: It's a Pati Jinich recipe.

That fluorescent orange stuff? Ethereal. Great tamales as well as the aforementioned barbacoa
  13. Those burnt ends were payment for being their Surly marketing exec. You work cheap!
  14. Sure, if you want culturally-appropriated gringo tamales. * * TRANSLATION: Not enough lard in the masa. 😉
  15. Alamo Tamales - you can order online, but I never have. I wouldn't miss the opportunity to wave at the tortilla-making ladies through the window. Make sure to get the handmade and not the machine made ones which are smaller, cheaper and "less handmade". They're the best I've found locally and you don't have to worry about how they've been made or kept.
  16. I can't be the only one wondering how you got hold of Jade's chili recipe.
  17. Straight from the horse's mouth. 🤘
