  1. Did someone say there's no such thing as retail theft by shoppers? Tell me, genius, what percentage of sales nationally is inventory theft on the floor of a store and how does that compare to other ways inventory disappears? Is there a number that shows floor theft is greater now than in any previous year? Also is that your picture or did you rip it from the internet? Where is the store located? I was in a Target earlier today and saw nothing remotely like that. I was also in a Walgreens in CA 3 weeks ago and saw nothing like it. A store that puts their deodorant behind lock and key like that is a store that doesn't want to sell deodorant. Whose neck do you think retailers are trying to put their foot on? Are you, in fact, gullible enough to believe that increasing criminal penalties for petty theft is going to deter theft or prove somehow beneficial to society?
  2. This was in Australia but wth... 1. Famous evangelical pastor tries to search for "Ladies and girls kissing" but... 2. Somehow manages to put his search into a tweet and not a search engine 3. Has a church staffer claim he was hacked. Brian Houston Says His X Account Was Hacked, But The Internet Isn't Buying It - RELEVANT (relevantmagazine.com)
  3. Yes lawmakers in Italy tried a similar approach in the early 2000s but repealed it 5 years later because it was cruel and infeasible.
  4. This time, THERE WILL BE VIDEO
  5. What's next: - destruction of an embryo will likely be treated as murder in Alabama. - the rights of embryos will be extended the same rights as born children in Alabama. - IVF is legal in Alabama - but only one embryo transfer at a time, no matter the quality of the embryo and every embryo created MUST be transferred.
  6. Paramount+ is free with a walmart+ membership, which is also free if one has amex plat. Either his widow has amex plat, walmart+, or maintains paramount+ on her own. If none of the above apply then their billing department is fucked up, which wouldn't exactly be a surprise.
  7. Reddit, its, shall we say, unreliability, and its appearance on the first page of search results, is discussed in the article. Verywell, People.com, Health.com, Travel + Leisure, Byrdie, MyDomaine, The Spruce, Lifewire, Southern Living, TreeHugger, Parents.com, Real Simple, Popular Science, Tom's Guide, NY Mag, CNET, Business Insider, Buzz Feed, Better Homes and Gardens, Rolling Stone - those are many of the brands that now dominate everyone's product recommendations search results and all they're doing is pull in reviews from amazon and then link back there for affiliate sales. Here's the article's conclusion:
  8. A fascinating article about how google is allowing large publishers to not only game 'search' but also fails sites that do actual independent reviews. An explanation for why your product review search results probably suck. https://housefresh.com/david-vs-digital-goliaths/
  9. Eh sorry Cap, my bad. It was the greater "you" and "you're" (user base) I was discussing and certainly nothing personal. Does AI have some legit uses? Sure. Less, however, than it seems if they have to remove the copyrighted works that were stolen and fed to it. Is it worth all the hype it's gotten? Fuck no.
  10. Computers aren't thinking. They're drawing off data-sets. AI doesn't understand what information means nor how it should be used. If you're putting your faith in a computer that's programmed to baffle you with bullshit instead of providing out that admits, "I don't know," the joke is on you. "I don't know" doesn't sell to end-users.
  11. January stats from Nielsen https://www.nielsen.com/insights/2024/colder-weather-and-nfl-playoffs-drive-increased-tv-usage-in-january/ doesn't include the super bowl Most streamed show on netflix was something called "Fool Me Once." On Disney+, it was "Bluey" and on prime it was "Reacher." "Fool Me Once" was streamed for ~50% more total minutes than "Reacher" which gives a huge comparison about the value of Netflix vs Prime imo.
  12. The + really isn't necessary. General comments - Shari Redstone is trying to sell Paramount and its holding company. Unlikely anyone is going to want to go into business with a company when they don't know who its owners will be in a few months. A paramount and peacock bundle seems unlikely at this stage. While Paramount streaming is garbage, and is neck and neck with Peacock for the shittiest, least-streamed service, they do own a storied Hollywood studio. The odds seem to be on Larry Ellison's son walking away as the eventual owner. For obvious reasons Comcast/NBC isn't going to be buying the company that owns CBS. Also while Comcast's business isn't great, compared to Paramount, it's on a whole other level.
  13. Enshittification is a strategy. Right now it's just a question of finding the bottom. What they're paranoid of is people canceling those $169 prime plans. They're trying to walk the line.
  14. Amazon continues its rapid pace of enshittification.
  15. I'd guess this is already happening based on the occasional shitty chat experience with live customer agents. I've found if you ask them whether they're a real person or if you're speaking with AI Chat, it breaks the spell and they cease to mindlessly forward the AI (non) answer to the question I've asked. I believe this was with amazon. No offense intended but the output doesn't read like AI to you?
  16. Idiocracy means a society governed or populated by idiots. Which spelling and definition do you think he was going for? Either way it doesn't change the fact that OP and babayaga were the only 2 posters on the site to use the word "ideocracy." I tend to think he meant to use idiocracy but could be wrong.
  17. I wonder who else on surly doesn't know how to spell idiocracy. Is it a lead? Fuck if I know.
  18. article - Trump owns 30% of 1290 6th Ave, which Steven Ross, actual real estate developer who knows he's doing, must've thrown him a bone. According to the NYP's real estate reporter, it's his best and possibly only asset that would allow raising the money necessary to appeal/pay the judgment. I recommend the article for the explanation about why every other Trump asset is garbage. However the maga brain worm comments in the posts at the end of the nyp article are -- not gonna lie -- entertaining af. https://nypost.com/2024/02/20/business/the-nyc-skyscraper-trump-could-dump-to-pay-off-355m-fraud-fine-and-it-doesnt-even-bear-his-name/
