  1. I think it would be a Hail Mary without a known result. On the "it might work out" side: I think the primary D candidates have embraced a leftward movement. So many centrists simply aren't going to vote for Trump that D's get their support for this election regardless of their position. It's precipitated a leftward movement. All of the sudden that anti-Trump vote is gone, and the leftward movement seems too drastic and suburban voters go back to the R. On the "it won't" side: lingering anti-Republican sentiment very very close to the election. Ford had to deal with that 3 years after he took over. 8 months would be too hard to overcome. I think Biden might have the most to gain. He's the traditional D candidate. Getting Nikki Haley up there and suddenly the left candidate looks crazier.
  2. other theory: Trump's reelection bid is already doomed as many on here have theorized based on hardened disapprovals at the 55% line. more and more R senators see that number as unmovable and are getting a contingency plan together if it sticks that way through the spring.
  3. If so, it was impressively fast. I think that takes the denial, anger, bargaining, whatever, whatever, acceptance thing, which would have taken more time. Acting this fast sounds like he is still working for his team, and not working on something that looks like he is on the other side as his team.
  4. probably a typo anyway. likely "MCCONNELL has hotcarled the resolution calling for release of the whistleblower report."
  5. sounds like we don't disagree, since that is flexing the power of the office in aiding his improper ask.
  6. I think you would be walking on pretty thin ice to go forward with something that wasn't an abuse of the office itself. Treason, bribery and high crimes and misdemeanors does not mean "crimes." It has elements of using the office for inappropriate ends. And anyone can call up someone and ask for help in an election -- Warren could do that today. What makes it a high crime is flexing the power he has because of the office to aid in it. In this case, it is withholding the funds or pressuring related to the funds. There are of course felonies that would be impeachable themselves. "Shooting someone on 5th Avenue," etc. The campaign finance violation might qualify, but it would be a tougher argument to make. (Note the weird effect of just saying "felony does the trick": You don't want to basically put in the hands of Congress the right to write statutes to post-hoc change the meaning of the constitution, which would be the case since they define what is a felony). Hugo Charles Black wrote a good book on it from Nixon's time and Phillip Bobbitt has an update for the present. It goes through the whole process and includes a pretty in depth look at what the debate was all about in 1789. It's pretty excellent.
  7. I think it does for the bribery treason high crimes and misdemeanors part. With the bare ask, he’s just soliciting help from foreigners. You’d probably be able to come up with 100 historical interactions with Britain or Israel that could be similar. With the quid pro quo, you get him interfering with a US governmental function (providing those funds for defense against Russia) in exchange for the personal benefit. That tracks the meaning of high crimes and misdemeanors.
  8. Rs have a pretty clear play here: work to conflate crimes with impeachable offense, and make it clear no crime was committed here.
  9. one of my R classmates became magistrate a year or two ago. i've been speculating she'll become one soon.
  10. when the Rs vote 0-200 on the articles, this blast will look a little off.
  11. A little different than the explanation others have given here, but I've found people just sort of give me leeway/benefit of the doubt because of my kids. Sort of like this scene, but for spawn instead of marriage.
  12. i get branco and garrison confused every now and again. glad to see one of them back again at least.
  13. That's all baseline R GOTV stuff. No different than any other year. In 2018, we saw huge blue GOTV and I believe it was a proxy vote against Trump. This time, you will get an actual vote against Trump. That's the GOTV math.
  14. In light of the doubling up on colluding with foreign governments, Kruse tweeted this. How was I not aware of that?
  15. If Trump doesn't make it Hugo needs all the pos rep because he called it every day when we were all scoffing.
  16. sweet. i didn't see the seig heil in front of the confederacy pic. you see, he just likes the romance of antebellum south. it's not a hatred thing.
  17. if it is the same dakota blakely i just found on facebook, i've already got a sandy hook post, a "do black lives really matter" post, and a kid wearing a confederate flag mask post, and him standing in front of a confederate flag with a pistol. i'm going to go out on a limb here and guess . . . julian castro supporter. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100017329086338
  18. Trump promises Cincinnati rally that US will end AIDS epidemic and find a cure for childhood cancer 'very shortly' Defense stocks rise as Trump says US is ‘locked and loaded’ in response to attack on Saudi oil No matter how low your opinion may be of President Trump, he’ll always find a way to lower it. On Wednesday, he outdid himself, breaking even the laws of physics by reaching new depths in two places at once.
  19. I think it is his only play. He has to have a nickname in order to win, and it's too late to change course to something else.
