  1. Christians: Never mind all the people we’ve slaughtered and land we’ve stolen in the name of Jesus Christ. At least our holy book that we mostly ignore is PG.
  2. Holy fuck that Christmas joke exchange was classic.
  3. What did you expect? In Texas, society is merely a series of economic transactions. We’re not a collective working together to advance the human condition; we’re a network of contracts. If it’s not in the interest of whatever company we’ve outsourced to provide basic necessities to actually provide those necessities, well… everyone can just get fucked. It’s nothing personal. It’s just business.
  4. She has a point. A capricious omnipotent deity co-parenting an only child with a virgin explains a lot more about the universe than quantum mechanics or general relativity.
  5. What a complete load of worthless horseshit. Muslims spent centuries carrying the torch of knowledge for mankind while European Christians wallowed in ignorance, superstition, and filth. There’s nothing inherent in either religion that would make the followers of one more capable of good or evil compared to the other.
  6. What a dumb fucking question. “Now that Country X is bombing the shit of your family and friends, do you approve of an attack against Country X?” Gee, I wonder how human beings in that situation will respond?
  7. Regulation, schemegulation. The free market will sort this out. People will stop buying lead contaminated applesauce once they die from lead poisoning, which will cause applesauce companies that taint their product with lead to either go out of business from a drop in demand or to reduce their prices to a point that makes lead-tainted applesauce more affordable for a less discerning market segment, such as people who have no income after becoming disabled by lead poisoning.
  8. Psychopath. Same as all the other belligerently sanctimonious assholes on the right wing.
  9. To the extent Satan is the same as the serpent of Eden, he is the real hero of the story. Evil, in the form of an oppressive deity demanding ignorance, shame, and submissiveness, prevailed.
  10. The Crusades; the Inquisition; innumerable murderous witch hunts; support for genocidal conquests; recurring antisemitic panics; molestation scandals; rampant fraud and con artistry; support for oppressive / fascist regimes; hateful policies; and generally foisting superstitious bullshit on the world in opposition to logic, reason, and science. But somehow Satanism is the evil religion. Yeah. Okay.
  11. Christmas Vacation doesn’t hold up and the original Vacation is a vastly funnier (and overall, much better) movie.
  12. Not instrumental, but this is the gold standard for Christmas music:

Agreed. It’s why you have to compare like to like. The ingredient in “Delta 9” edibles that gets you high is Delta 9 THC, which is the exact same psychoactive molecule found in marijuana edibles. But people are super confused about that, probably because Delta 8 (which is different) appeared in the Texas market first.

Right. And when THCa is burned, it converts to Delta 9. THCa isn’t psychoactive. That’s why just chewing weed won’t get you high. You have to cook it to get THC (Delta 9). I should clarify that when using the term “marijuana,” I’m generally referring to edibles derived from the marijuana plant. Which I understand is probably confusing.

Not just “in some amount.” Delta 9 is the primary intoxicating molecule in marijuana. There is literally no difference at the molecular level between “Delta 9 THC” and the THC in marijuana that is primarily responsible for getting you high. The difference from what I can tell is that marijuana also includes a whole shitload of other cannabinoids (such as CBD, CBN, Delta 8, Delta 10, etc.), typically in lower amounts compared to Delta 9 THC.

As I understand it, both are versions of the THC molecule. Delta 9 is the exact same molecule that gets you high from regular old weed. Delta 8 is a slight variant, and is generally thought to be less potent and give a slightly different high. In Texas, I believe the main difference as it relates to Delta 9 THC is how it is derived (from hemp, not marijuana) and the limits on concentration (0.3%). And also, Delta 9 products might lack trace cannabinoids that are found in weed. I guess that could make a difference. So generally, a Delta 9 edible in Texas can be compared apples-to-apples to a THC edible bought in, say, Colorado. The same THC is the primary active ingredient in both, although a marijuana edible will likely include a broader spectrum of cannabinoids that could vary the effects. But I’m certainly not an expert on any of this.
  17. The only thing Alex and I agree about is his self-loathing.
  18. And to address the sudden topic shift: for the same reason, the fascist right wing is dominated by Christian denominations that place more emphasis on apocalyptic eschatology. Dystopian fiction goes back millennia and it served the same purpose then that it serves now.
  19. “Wrong” is a subjective term. What’s clear is that fiction — especially dystopian narratives — can be incredibly powerful propaganda. For example, research suggests that totalitarian dystopian fiction makes people more likely to support political violence. Indeed, fiction appears far more persuasive on this front that nonfictional reports of actual totalitarian oppression. Which is why so much of the emerging genre of rightwing fiction deals with totalitarian dystopian themes. The right is indulging in the fantasy of a leftist totalitarian dystopia and it’s driving them to political violence. It’s much easier to convince a group of idiots who consume a steady stream of stupid bullshit about leftist world government conspiracies to storm the capital than, say, people who watch mainstream news outlets, read Oprah’s book list, and indulge in rom coms.
  20. This thread should put an end to the idea that there is any substance whatsoever to Anastasis’s bothsides nonsense. It’s nothing but empty rhetoric.
  21. You made an absurdly sweeping bothsideser claim. You can’t back it up. Which, of course, is completely unsurprising to any of us.
  22. What a bloviating way to admit you’re full of shit. Cite the examples, Annie.
