  1. I have the obsv, barrel select from whiskey pete, in Houston. Have not cracked it and may not for a long time.
  2. Did not realize they were in the HOF. That is comforting. Yes, the documentary showed bitterness on both sides (both Mickey Dolenz and David Crosby were miffed that studio musicians were brought in to record their albums). This is all fine and dandy except the cellist will have his or her name mentioned in the album credits. The Wrecking Crew often did not. That's why I think they are not getting royalties. The Pink Panther Theme you've heard a thousand times? That was the Wrecking Crew. That saxophonist is apparently not mentioned, or credited, at all.
  3. I saw a Stagg Jr on the shelf in a store in Jersey Village, and that same store had Old Forester 1920 too. That's as close as I've come to a unicorn lately.
  4. Anyone see this documentary last night on PBS? I never heard of these guys. What an interesting story. So this group of 10-20 studio musicians is behind hundreds (maybe closer to 1000) songs that are practically the soundtrack of America, songs you've heard so often you know them like the back of your hand. The Beach Boys? They never played on a Beach Boys record. It was always the Wrecking Crew. The Monkees, Sonny and Cher, the Mamas and the Papas, Herb Alpert. The list goes on and on. So two travesties strike me about how this all went down. First of all, it's a sham to us as music lovers that the actual band we thought we loved were not the musicians we thought they were. There was a borderline Milli Vanilli situation going on with hundreds of acts. So that makes it sad for the actual act that they didn't get to record on their own albums (some of them actually practiced and thought they were good enough so were insulted when studio musicians were brought in to do the recordings instead). But it's also sad for this fantastic group of studio musicians, because they get absolutely no credit. They were paid scale apparently, and do not get royalties. I'm not sure how that worked out but you can tell they are bitter that they don't get the credit they deserve, and all the love and adoration goes to the act itself. Apparently, the Grammy for song of the year 7 years in a row, went to a Wrecking Crew recording, yet they won no Grammy's and no one ever heard of them. If these guys aren't deserving of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I don't know who is.
  5. I expect she will appeal to quite a few groups and make it a close race. Might have been closer had White won, but we shall see. Am not expecting any upsets here, and at least Abbott is a longhorn. I'm wagering she loses 60% to 40%.
  6. A couple of plot points that blocked me from suspending belief. John was hanging out at the only other bar in town, the one in beantown, and the cops didn't bother to look in there in their apb search for him? Secondly, Sandy Denny playing on the jukebox to a bunch of Mexicans. Don't think so. Wouldn't have been on the jukebox, and wouldn't have been selected had it been on there. Thirdly, Camille can't be that stupid, and suffer from that lack of judgement to check him into a hotel and get naked with a fugitive. Seriously, who would do that? Lastly, dispatch reported them checking into hotel, and they have time to have a long conversation, get naked, bump fuzzies, and then nap before the cops arrive at the little, podunk, one horse town? Please.
  7. i prefer my veterans to not be prisoners.
  8. yes, i've tried opah, and it is delicious. don't ever see that one in the stores here either. sounds like your heb buyer has a keen eye, and for sustainable species too. wish the other stores would do that.
  9. I don't recall seeing monkfish at my HEB. I'll be on the lookout for it. I go to Central Market, Whole Foods also on occasion and am always on the lookout for new and interesting seafood, but am not paying $16/lb like they want for grouper, halibut, etc. If it's in my price range, I'll buy it.
  10. I have a gospel box set where she sings Mary, Don't you weep. It's pretty moving. She brought the soul to everything she did. Great lady, and great American icon. Sad to see her go.
  11. Kim Son, in Houston serves up tasty softshell crab. I would never make it at home. Sauteing rockfish this weekend. Been buying that turbot, and black drum from Quality Seafood lately. They're all three very affordable, compared to the other options in the Austin markets, and extremely delicious.
  12. me too. i havent allowed myself to get this hopeful in 5-6 years. we have a long history of stepping on our dicks while at the same time shooting ourselves in the foot. herman's recruiting is starting to scare me, he retained his inept offensive coordinator, we lost several players to the draft that were advised not to enter the draft. these are all bad signs. oh wait, did i say i was hopeful? lots of quality depth throughout the roster, we were in some games the last couple of years that if we can keep our synapses from misfiring we would have had excellent seasons. the close losses are uncanny. frustrating, but it does mean we're close.
  13. What are you interested in - do you fish, scuba, etc? Are you into history, art, etc? I was in Paris in June and would highly recommend it. There were solo people at practically every outdoor cafe - drinking coffee, wine, etc. Lots of singles at museums also - Louvre, Pompidou, D'Orsay. You could spend a week there if you are an art lover. If you like to drive you could do a Kentucky bourbon tour. Hundreds of distilleries to sample, Louisville Slugger is there, Shiloh battlefield, Churchill Downs and all the horseracing farms, etc. You could spend a week there as well. And, it would probably only set you back around $1.5K. For an additional $1.5K you could take me with you and that would bring you right back up to your $3K budget.
  14. we have no more fucking idiots in this country per capita than any other country. if you find one with a smarter population feel free to move there. dont let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. if you look up the definition of mass public in the back of a government textbook it will use the word ignorant and/or uneducated. that's just the way population dynamics works. like everything else, it's a bell curve. societies will be judged, not by how many rich people, or smart people it has, but by how it cares for the underprivileged - the poor, the children, the elderly, etc. Democrats get this and believe its a vital role of government. Republicans, on the other hand, say fuck those people. We have tried laissez faire time and time again and it never works. Greed will always bloom, and the people will get fucked in the ass. Thus, regulations are necessary.
  15. no, and nobody said that but you. but everything that has the potential to fuck us in the ass should be regulated.
  16. i believe this fact is lost on conservatives. all they see is "witch hunt!"
  17. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will never be President?
  18. some of you fuckers are not complete as men or human beings. seriously, i'm not a film geek and don't even post in the forum that often but you guys are missing out on some world class movies that have helped form our culture. you owe it to yourself, and to everyone that knows you, to educate and elevate yourself and watch some of these movies.
  19. this show hit a brickwall several episodes ago. the characters are not believable, they don't react to situations in a way that's normal or that anyone can identify with. the mother just told her eldest daughter she never loved her. nice. i get personality quirks and smalltown eeriness, but none of these characters are relatable.
  20. Barefoot in the Park is excellent. He was damn good in Electric Cowboy too, and Butch Cassidy.
  21. I wish conservatives comprehended Econ 101.
