  1. Out of curiosity I looked back and Fall '24 basically started a year ago today. First real cold front of the season rolled in on 10/16/24 and cooled things down to the 70's and 50's for a few days, but it reverted right back to Late Summer again the following week. Hit 90 for the final time that year on 10/26. Took several more weeks for it to get consistently cool. First 15 days of November were warmer than average.
  2. What time do you East TX hunters set your feeders for the mornings? I feel like last year we had ours way too early for the first few weeks. Sitting in the dark for 40+ minutes after going off. It wasn't what I'd consider light enough to shoot until about 5 minutes past 7 this morning. I'm thinking maybe 6:45 am for now, adjust to 6 am after the time change, and then nudge it up to 6:20 or so after Thanksgiving? Currently going off at 5:45 in the evenings, but will probably adjust to ~4:30 after the time change. Making a quick trip up Saturday to top off feeders and set the feed schedule.
  3. Feels pretty damn good out there this morning. I'd love if it were 8-10 degrees colder, but I'll take what I can get for now. Spending the weekend in Baton Rouge and I definitely ain't complaining about this forecast:
  4. I remember this story when it first came out last year, specifically cause there were so many smoking-gun quotes from both the software vendor and the companies that used it. The plaintiffs lawyers involved must have thought they'd died and gone to heaven.
  5. Breaking: Mini Orbit also sent packing. Bobby Dynamite evicted from his perch atop Union Station, and it's a bloodbath amongst the Shooting Stars.
  6. Hard to call this a "cold front", given that highs will still be around 90, but this weekend is gonna feel so much nicer than the last few days. "Dry front" is probably a better term. Sidenote, if you want a reminder of just how dumb the general public is, read the replies when local weather anchor posts something like this. The amount of people that can't read a clearly-labeled chart and/or don't understand the difference between dewpoint and temperature is impressive.
  7. I-10 at 45 bout to be (even more) of a disaster due to lane closures related to the project to raise the roadway out of the White Oak flood zone. Starting later this month, it'll be down to 2 lanes through late next year. Certain routes (like the eastbound ramp to 45) will be out of commission through 2028. On the bright side, at least 10 will eventually go over the Houston Ave. bridge instead of under. Big rigs that are too tall have smashed into the bridge 72 times already this year!
  8. Completely unexpected, but got about 45 minutes of rain last night between 9-10 in my neck of 77018. More than a drizzle, but not exactly a drought buster. Another muggy day with temps 8-9 above the average high and low today. Drier air not set to arrive until late tomorrow evening. At this time Friday morning, the dewpoint should be about 20 degrees lower than it is currently.
  9. Houston weather, October 2024: 26th ended up being the last day of the year where we hit 90. 27th (88) was the last day above 85.
  10. Average high for October 7th is 86, average low is 64. So yes, 93/75 is what I would call unseasonable.
  11. Yeah, it's a "backdoor" mass of drier air coming from the northeast, rather than the typical front coming from Canada and heading south through the panhandle.
  12. Just going by what the models say. Dewpoint projections for Wed-Fri:
  13. 93/74 forecast for tomorrow in Houston. That's 7 above the average high and 10 above the average low for 10/7. No sign of any legit fronts before next weekend maybe, but by this Friday it should feel a bit nicer than the early part of this week. Dewpoints drop back into the low 50's this weekend, so it will be unseasonably warm, but not miserable, and should be pretty nice in the mornings and after sunset.
  14. I prefer the original meme:
  15. Might soon need to go dig up my old meme posting of "Friendship with WTI ended, Now nat gas is my best friend"
  16. High of 90-93, low of 71-74 every single day for the next 10 days. Next Saturday might, just barely, be the next day where the high drops to 89 or less. Looks like the trade-off for a pretty mild Summer was that it's just gonna stretch into November.
  17. NOt yet. Will probably end up waiting closer to the holidays. Good looking watch there.
  18. Good call. Ended up stopping at Lavaca in PL. Just got the classic 2 meat plate. Brisket was top notch. Big Red ribs also good, but just a tad too sweet for my taste. Jalapeno cream corn was the best of the sides we ordered. Place is tiny, but we got there at the perfect time. One group of refinery workers were just finishing up and leaving and another group of 15+ came in right after we ordered. They were still in line ordering when we were pulling out of the parking lot.
  19. Gonna be stuck in this "warmer than it should be but not awful" pattern for a while. Nary a hint of the next cooling front until late next week at the earliest. Highs will continue to run about 6-7 degrees above average until then.
  20. Ended up just being 2 dove hunts. Guide for the teal hunt called us Thursday evening as we were finishing that evening's dove hunt. Said we'd just be wasting time and money as he hadn't been seeing any birds. So we just went back out to the same dove field the next morning and shot a few dozen more. Work weekend at the deer lease ahead. Gonna haul my golf cart up there for Fall, fill feeders, clear brush....etc. A damn weed grew up and been swaying in the wind in front of my game camera, causing me to receive dozens of pictures of nothing the past week or so.
  21. "Seasons Over" lineup today, might as well.
  22. On top of bringing in a new training staff, we may want to hire some sports psychologists and maybe a witch doctor/exorcist to remove whatever curse fell upon on MMP/Daikin post '22. We started this season 32-14 in the friendly confines of downtown Houston, then went 14-21. 3rd straight year where we struggled at home late in the year (including the infamous 4 home losses in the '23 ALCS and getting swept out of the wild card last year). Despite having an overall winning record at home, we ended up a with a significantly negative run differential. Doesn't help that Walker was a completely different player on the road (.772 OPS, 18 HR) vs home (.623 OPS, 8 HR)
  23. Nightmare season is finally over. Amazing that we were still in playoff contention until Game 161, considering: Blanco started in 9 games before needing TJ, Garcia got 2, Wesneski got 6, Walter got 9. Arrighetti avoided TJ by missing most of the season due to a freak accident during BP. The Ghost of Cristian Javier didn't start a game until mid-August. We had to give 15 starts to a JAG named Colton Gordon. Framber pitched like an ace until late July then went 2-7 in his final 11 starts, with the team losing 9 of those games. Our all-star closer's shoulder spontaneously exploded just in time to miss the final 30 games. Meyers' calf exploded, wiping out 2 months of a career-best year. Paredes' hamstring exploded, wiping out 2 months of an all-star year. Pena's multiple injuries cumulatively cost him almost 40 games in a career-best year. Yordan basically missed the entire season aside from the 2 1/2 weeks preceding his ankle injury. It's abundantly obvious now that he was physically incapable of swinging a bat with any oomph during those first 30 games of the season. Due to a lack of OF depth, Cam was rushed into an everyday starter role despite having ~30 games as a professional and never playing anything even remotely close to 162 game season. Christian Walker led the team in HR and RBI despite waiting until the the final series of the season before registering a positive WAR (0.1). Yainer was our 3rd highest run producer despite becoming the worst pitch-chaser in MLB and seeing his OPS drop below .700. Over 700 AB's went to has-beens and never-weres (Hummel, Rodgers, Trammell, Chas...etc) or guys not ready for the show (Brice, Melton). Of the few fill-ins that performed above replacement level, one didn't make it past May before season-ending injury (Dezenzo) and one didn't even appear until Game 148 (Cole). ^^^ That's somehow the condensed version. I've got more!
