  1. Finally got to go check out my Dad's new bay boat. We fished Sabine Lake Friday morning. Good news: Conditions were as good as you could hope for, no wind whatsoever, water was good color and flat as glass, clouds kept the temps down around 80. Caught probably 2 dozen fish over the course of the morning. Bad news: Only 2 of those fish were keeper trout (~16 inches). Rest were small trout, big slimy hardheads, and god knows how many bait-thieving ladyfish. I've had a pretty bad run the past few years. It's been at least 3 years since I can recall a day of catching limits. Most of my last dozen or so fishing trips have been about like yesterday.
  2. Wakefield is finally open both ways from Shepherd to Ella for the first time in nearly a year. Will be really nice when they finish the sidewalks and people can go to the bars and breweries without having to walk in the street. Curious to see if the Petrol Station replacement will actually plan to finally open this Fall now that it's accessible.
  3. Didn't see this posted yesterday. Made me laugh.
  4. Fangraphs latest projections have us finishing 104-58 (1 game better than LAD and NYY), winning the West (>99.9%) by 18 over SEA, 30 over LAA and TEX, and 42 over OAK. BR projections have us finishing best-case 109-53, worst-case 96-66. Some buddies of mine share a block of season tickets and on our group text were joking yesterday about how it's late July and essentially have over 2 months to go until our next game that actually matters. "I've got 12-15 more games of mop-up duty to attend."
  5. Press 30 straight retired, damn impressive.
  6. You know it's been a long, hot, dry summer when you look at the extended forecast, see this, and think "hey some improvement!"
  7. I'm guessing he is shut down for rest of season and is effectively retiring.
  8. Absolutely atrocious against RHP, even worse than Yuli, but has feasted on lefties. He'd make sense only if we were platooning him with a 1B that hits righties well. Marginal upgrade at best.
  9. We're 10 days out from the trade deadline. Looking around this morning at some possible 1B and/or OF upgrades and the pickings seem fairly slim as far as players available from non-contending teams go. Josh Bell is obviously the belle of the ball. Dude's a legit switch-hitter (identical OPS of .890 from each side of the plate this season ). Good walk numbers, career .350 OBP and solid pop. The only other 1B on a bad team that is swinging the bat well is CJ Cron, but that seems to be a pretty clear case of Coors Field mirage. Both this year and last, his OPS is a good .300 higher at home than on the road. Away from Denver he's essentially not an upgrade over Yuli. Considering that we're getting zero updates on Uncle Mike, we may need to get serious about picking up a LF. There I see maybe 2 options. Benintendi obviously, and Ian Happ is having a very solid season. His power numbers are down from last few years, but getting more hits and getting on base more. Would have him for at least another year if we picked him up. Who am I missing?
  10. I wasn't gonna hit the panic button, but if the last 36 hours go the opposite way, I'm a very unhappy camper. Would be nice to get some stress-free wins though. You'd think 7-2 in the 9th and 5-1 in the 8th would suffice, but alas. Anyways, some assorted thoughts to close out the night.... Glad to disabuse SEA of their newfound feelings of invincibility. I think some of their fans were starting to get delusions of actually making a run at the division vs. just chasing a wild card. That said, still need to win the majority of this stretch where we play them 7 times in 10 days. Winning the first matchup is a good start. Up to 30 over .500, high water mark of the season so far. Though 94 games, we're 1 behind 2017, on par with 2018, and up 3 and 6 on 2019 and 2021, respectively. We're up 11 on the only team in our division with any chance of sniffing the playoffs. For reference, with 68 games remaining each, SEA could win 60% of their remaining games and we'd still win the West even if we only win 45%, and we have the most favorable remaining schedule in the majors. Yordan is back and collecting on debts that accrued during his absence. Would love to see 7 innings out of JV and Framber in the next 2. Bullpen needs some rest (and some remedial lessons on how to fucking throw strikes) and hopefully Press rejoins the team tomorrow.
  11. Just drove back from Lumberton to Houston on Hwy 90 about an hour ago. Rained buckets from Sour Lake all the way until about 2 miles NE of 610 and of course it was bone dry in the city. Was quite pissed off, thinking I'd gotten skunked again, but just got a pretty decent little 10 minute downpour here in GOOF, at least enough to soak the lawn and flower beds and save me from needing to water this evening.
  12. Yep, I don't think we can count on getting Brantley back anytime soon. Need a 1B/OF.
  13. RBOB gasoline futures at $3.12 are down to a 3-month low. Have finally this week started seeing pump prices just barely under $4 on my short commute. From looking around, prices definitely cheaper outside the city.
  14. Well, that's certainly putting your marker down. What's the economy look like in that scenario? $8 gasoline, $1000K/month electric bills?
  15. There's an "Ag with kids" that is an extremely prolific poster on Texags. Unless it's a huge coincidence, of course Surly would seem left wing compared to that hellhole.
  16. Yep. Got a good 2 months to go before it makes any sense to start hoping for that first cool front. September 20th is about the average day over the past 125 years that Central and East Texas sees its first temperature reading of 65 or below. On the extremes it has come as early as 8/30 or as late as 10/13, but typically it arrives the 3rd or 4th week of September. With the way our luck has gone this summer, we'll probably set a new record (not in a good way). Right now, the daily average highs and lows stay the same for over a week at a time. Gotta wait until late August to get an average temp drop in less than 5 days. Only real difference you'll notice over the next few weeks is the days getting shorter, which I guess at least means the extreme afternoon highs subside a little quicker. Currently only losing less than a minute sunlight or so each day, but that will start picking up steam. By this time next month, sunrise will be a minute later and sunset a minute earlier each day, more or less.
  17. Fuck it, I'm moving to Dublin. Hit their "all time high" of (squints) 91 but it's already down to 71. Tomorrow's high is a scorching 68. I went on a vacation there back in August 2018. One day of the trip, the sun actually came out and the temperature crept up to 80 or so. It seemed like the entire city took the day off to go hang out/picnic in the city parks. Some locals told me that the a dead giveaway that somebody was an American tourist (aside from being fat and wearing a baseball hat) was going out in public in a pair of shorts. I joke, but with every passing year, I become more and more determined not to spend all year living in Texas. I've got to eventually end up somewhere with legitimate contrasts between the seasons. I'm tired of the years where it's 90 on Halloween, 82 on Thanksgiving and 74 on Christmas. I don't mind being somewhere that's hot-ish on summer days as long as it's dry and cools down below 70 in the evenings and early mornings.
  18. I sure hope I don't look like current Dave Mustaine.
  19. Only drawback to going this time of year is that it's monsoon season up in the mountains. About a 50% chance of an afternoon shower just about every day for the next several weeks. Can be out riding or hiking in sunny weather, low 80's and all the sudden the wind starts whipping around, temp drops 15+ degrees and it starts dumping on you.
