Hunting ‘23/‘24: Bag ‘em and Tag ‘em
Haven't seen any in the flesh yet, but there are plenty of signs at my lease that there are some very large hogs. Was out there exploring this past Saturday, getting more familiarized with which roads lead where. Walked down to the bone-dry "watering hole" and passed some relatively fresh hoof prints in the sand that were way too big to be a deer. Walked around to the somewhat cleared out area behind the pond and there were some rather large crap piles, also definitely not from a deer.

San Marcos bars to kill some time in
Have a guys trip coming up this weekend with a house rented on the SM River. Most of us are getting into town a couple of hours before we can check in to our rental. Those of you that live in the area, where's a good place for a bunch of 40 year old dudes to hang out on a Friday afternoon? I haven't lived there since I graduated 16 years ago and there are new bars and restaurants every time I pass through. Hardly recognize the place anymore.

Blastfurnace 2023
Started yesterday for us here in Houston. Leaving the office around 6:30 yesterday it was oppressively swampy, even inside my building's parking garage. Somehow it felt a little hotter and muggier when I went outside around 9:00 last night.

The long-range forecasts seem to finally be reflecting a slight pattern shift next week, but nothing particularly dramatic, and not really anything that someone would consider a "cold front." Whatever makes it down to Texas looks like it'll have more significant effects on Panhandle and DFW area than Austin or Houston. Bunch of 95/74 days listed for Houston starting on 9/12, which, albeit an improvement, is still ~3 degrees above the average high and low for the the time of year. 7 days away is towards the outer limits of forecast models being worth much of anything, so I won't really start feeling any confidence that it'll happen unless/until the forecast is still looking that way as of around Friday.

Celebrity Death Pool -- 2023
A lot of Buffet songs are what I'd consider "gimmicky", but listened to Come Monday a few times this weekend and that's just a perfect 1970's tune. Watched an interview where he played it on Letterman in the early 1980's and described it as "the song that kept me from killing myself while living in a Howard Johnson in Marin County."

Elon Musk: Nazi traitor piece of shit [Confirmed]
Elon says he estimates his damages caused by ADL to be "half the value of Twitter", which he says amounts to upwards of $22B. JFC, people used to look at this guy like some revolutionary genius. He massively overpaid for a social media site b/c he's an insecure man-baby, completely fucked it, and is now blaming THE JEWS for it being a bad investment.

Clocked a total of 11 minutes of rain today in my neck of Houston. 8 minutes of moderate rain around 2:00. 3 minutes of heavy rain around 5:00. Maybe 1/5 inch total. Still, by far, the most rain I've had in 2 months.

Yeah, that's the kicker. It's not extreme, record-setting hot any more, but the current long range forecast goes out to 9/15, and is basically 99/78 every day through then. Average temp range this time of year is 93/72. By two Fridays from now, it "should" be 91/71. We're going to spend the first half of September consistently 7-8 degrees above average. We typically see our first legit front that drops lows into the mid-60's for a day or two sometime between 9/20 and 10/1. At this point, just getting 4-5 degrees closer to normal temps would be a huge win. As in, some 94/74 days, which would be still be hotter than average, would be very welcome.

~40% rain chances for Greater Houston area Sunday-Wednesday. I swear, if it pours down 2 miles west or south of my house again and I barely get a drop...

Damnit, hunting season starts tomorrow, college football gets going in earnest this weekend. This is the time of year that I mentally categorize as "Fall." It sure as shit ain't gonna feel like it any time soon though.

Blastfurnace 2023
Aside from that maybe that one Wednesday 2 weeks ago, this was the nicest morning of the last 3 months. Felt great, and that northern air just has a different smell to it. Smelled like Fall for a few fleeting hours. Gave myself a small treat and popped into the coffee shop next to my gym and grabbed a proper coffee to drink on my back porch when I got home. Dogs just laid on the ground next to me and looked pleased as shit. It was a good morning.

Some rather weird days in that chart. High of 99 on 9/24, but a front apparently passed through and dropped the low to 59 that evening. The next day was 105.

2021 - Is inflation finally back in the conversation?
Paywalled article in Bloomberg yesterday about how retailers are finally putting stuff on sale again. Clothes, shoes, appliances..etc. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-27/discounts-make-a-comeback-as-shoppers-get-picky-about-spending?sref=QEebQnRf#xj4y7vzkg Anecdotally, I have noticed a lot more "40% off sitewide" deals from apparel brands lately.

Sidenote, but the scene in Arrested Development where Franklin gets bleached in the washing machine and GOB uses a proper, English accent to say "You've ruined the act, GOB" is arguably the most laugh out loud bit in the entire series.

Yes, I've been wrong before and will continue to make faulty predictions. I don't have a crystal ball and can only go on what the forecast models are showing. That's why I usually say "should."
