God I miss those puffy tacos/tostadas, and their hot sauce... hell pretty much everything on the menu. They used to do pork chops with grilled pico... why in the hell doesn't anyone do puffy tacos up here?
Caro's was Mexican food. Pretty old school and didn't taste like anything else in town that I know of (if anybody knows of anything similar, please do tell). They had puffy tacos, bizarrely incredible nacho cheese, and the puffy tostadas and hot sauce were like crack. I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I grew up on it.
Clearly not the main take away of the article but was Dos Juan's really Caros under a new name? The time I ate in there they swore they weren't. But I assumed after John ran everyone off, they changed the name as a last ditch effort to save the place. Damn I miss Caros.
Well this sucks. That one was always my favorite. We used to hit up their lunch menu in high school all the time. I'm pretty sure the first meal I had with my wife was there. The Granbury one is fine, but when I ate at the Benbrook one a few months back it was terrible.
I'm bad luck for Billy. They left the original spot shortly after my first visit. I finally went to the new one for breakfast like 2 weeks ago and now this!
Stopped by La Pantera Tacos y Mas, the late night taco shop being run out Panther City BBQ, and I really enjoyed my tacos. By the time I got there, right around midnight, the only meats left were chicken and pork carnitas. The chicken was good, but the carnitas were awesome. I will go back again and try some the other options for sure.
Yeah, it looks like cheap Mexican restaurant with some bbq banners hung on the stucco walls. I read the Texaco land lord wanted a restaurant with more regular hours. They just closed up whenever they ran out of food and that seemed to usually be early afternoon. I don't think they were willing to change that so the lease wasn't renewed. I really did enjoy their food the handful of times I went down there over the years. But I can remember stopping by more than once and they were closed during their regular hours.
I stopped by BBQon the Brazos finally, and I was disappointed. Each time I went to the Cresson location I really enjoyed the brisket and loved the ribs. That was not the case this time. The ribs were fine, but the brisket was not. Plus, the little things like shitty decor and not particularly friendly service seemed okay when eating in a Texaco, but came off much worse in the new location. The inside of that new place is just pitiful. I realize they likely didn't do much to that place on the inside before they opened, but it really shows. It felt like walking into one of those seasonal Halloween shops or Christmas toy stores that clearly used be something else and little to no effort was put forth to hide it. I doubt I'll go back and that sucks because I really liked it previously. Oh well.
