  1. But even Gabriel went much more mainstream in the mid-80s with “So”.
  2. Actually, no - Keillor was distributed by American Public Media, an offshoot of Minnesota Public Radio, a totally separate org from NPR (if we are splitting hairs).
  3. Six decades of contributing to what was great about America - educational programs, cultural programs, outreach to underserved communities and amplification of voices who were previously ignored. All gone, and now leaving NPR/PBS and their hundreds of member stations to try and figure out a way forward without a coordinating/funding body. Everyone who voted for this and cheers it can go, well, you know. None of this is making us a better country.
  4. This is worth your time - a real-world example of what the GOP's defunding of public broadcasting is doing (contrary to the "iT's aLl wOkE cRaP aNd NoBoDy lIsTeNs" narrative): https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/29/media/pbs-npr-trump-defund-rescissions-alaska-remote-stations
  5. Big fan of this thread so far, and looking forward to listening to many of the vids above. The best live act I ever saw with horns was Tower of Power - in my case it was Caravan of Dreams in FW in the mid-90s, but they’ve been solid since the 70s. A couple fine examples:
  6. Do as I say, not as I do, part 5,238. https://www.texastribune.org/2025/07/25/giovanni-capriglione-affair-texas-house-republican/
  7. Major deluge during afternoon commute in Dallas today. Lots of pooling water, and Greenville Avenue totally flooded outside the Royal Oaks CC entrance - cars were barely getting by on the median. We've gotten almost none of what y'all have received down there the past week, so this was a change.
  8. I’ve been going to Mo Ranch since I was 8 - stayed in Guest Lodge and River Dorm (the evacuated lodgings closest to the river) multiple times. Mo is more corporate than the family-owned camps (I don’t mean that pejoratively) so they have a plan for everything and know how to execute it well. Having said that, I bet the folks that run the place take no comfort or pride in being featured like this, as their hearts are with their neighbors down the road. I will be away from the state for a few weeks but damn, I wish I were down there helping. The need will still be there next month, and the month after and so on.
  9. Phone alerts, etc are all fine and good, but they cannot account for spotty service, do not disturb mode, etc. At this point just put a network of sirens all along 34 and 1340 - basically anywhere in the county in a 100-year flood area along the river. Test them regularly and fire them up whenever there’s a warning at the earliest possible moment. That way, no matter what the hour, if I’m camp staff or a counselor I know the moment I hear it to gather up my folks and head to high ground.
  10. Where is the water level in relation to the new housing subdivision just to the north of there? They built really close to the river. Also, given the big jump in level at Travis this morning, I’m assuming LCRA just keeps the dam totally closed to refill the lake? I haven't seen any specific note about that.
  11. Sunday afternoons are typically the most thinly-staffed time of week in newsrooms (other than overnight). Especially now.
  12. Well, this piece from two months ago outlines Stephen Miller’s position on it, so this is likely where things are headed. I hope I’m wrong. https://www.yahoo.com/news/stephen-miller-unveils-bizarre-attack-194857907.html
  13. While I don’t entirely disagree with your premise, I want to note a key distinction here: these teachers are not using those gift cards to “supplement their income”. In the case of my wife and many of her colleagues, they’re using those cards to buy classroom supplies that they are given no budget to purchase because of the continued degradation of school funding in our state - or, using them to buy protein bars to keep on hand since budgets for free breakfasts and lunches have been severely cut by our esteemed governor.
  14. My 18yo saw it, loved it and said it was about as good as the animated original. That surprised me.
