  1. Is it possible that those 200 people were arrested and didn't actually commit any crimes? People are arrested and released all the time, especially when the police are making broad sweeping arrests and sorting it out later. Here's another time where a bunch of people were arrested and released: https://www.npr.org/2019/04/03/709432311/texas-prosecutor-drops-all-charges-in-2015-biker-shootout-that-killed-9 This is for another thread probably, so I'll leave it at that. But my original point stands. If Trump, or any politician, committed crimes, you don't let the inmates run the asylum. You don't set precedent that elected officials can commit crimes as long as their supporters commit enough violence to scare people. What a horrible slippery slope that would be.
  2. Sure. Of Course. Are you saying that there were criminals at those events that weren't prosecuted for political reasons? As far as I know they prosecuted everyone they could catch and prove crimes on. I don't recall an instance of a DA saying "well this person committed crimes but sentencing them would piss people off so we're not going to bother". But I'm open to evidence showing otherwise.
  3. Turns out it wasn't a cut line. The electrician I called out just misdiagnosed it. Whether incompetence or money driven who knows. I gave some thought to the situation and property.. we just moved in a few months ago, still learning things. It didn't add up. It didn't make sense for power to run to and from where the guy was saying. And it doesn't make sense that the neither I or the pool guys noticed that they cut through buried PVC pipe. Called another electrician. Septic pump was bad and tripping a single semi-hidden outdoor breaker that I never saw. Replaced the septic pump. All good. Second electrician saved me about 3 large. Found my electrician for this house going forward. Anyway my concrete is coming in next week. Ahead of schedule. Pretty pumped.
  4. Then they can go to jail with him. Fuck around and find out. You don't ignore the rule of law because it's going to upset people. (Trump is never going to see the inside of a cell, but still)
  5. Did Biden retain Deborah Birx or no?
  6. Most surprising to me was how over four years the "religious" right actually convinced themselves that Trump was a godly and reverent person. I figured they'd understand that he's not, but he would pass conservative policy, and they'd find a way to bridge that mental gap. Nope. A majority of them actually think he's a religious man. The bible-in-hand photo op was pure theater of the absurd. His attempts to appear religious were so cynical and half-assed. He didn't even try. It's like he knew that just holding up a Bible in a picture was all the mental cover Republicans needed. Nothing Trump did surprised me at all. Nothing. But the mental gymnastics from his supporters? Mind blowing.
  7. Y'all trying to full blown CR this thread. Cut the shit.
  8. Sure. That's fair. And I'll probably leave it there because we're right on the razor's edge of going CR here. I think we as a country and planet have done a pretty strong job with the vaccine. From the scientists to the corporations to the governments to the healthcare workers. The rollout could have gone a little bit better, but it looks like most places with a few exceptions (looking at you NYC) have their shit together now.
  9. Correct. Capitalism saved the day here, not the government. And will continue to do so. These pharmas would have found the money had Germany and the US not given it to them ahead of time. They would have had no problem getting the money from Private Equity or elsewhere.
  10. Do we know the status or timeline for clinical trials for kids? I don't know if there's been a lot of conversation around that.
  11. The kids are an angle I didn't consider and a good point. I'm not really worried about kids in general and I have two of them. It's a what 1 in 30,000 death rate for kids? But you do have immunocompromised and kids with pre-existing conditions. My understanding, anecdotally, is that some doctors are already starting to refer pregnant women for the vax or will be soon.
  12. Once everyone who wants a vaccine has one, most people are going to burn their masks, myself included. This 2022 shit is nonsense. Once everyone has a chance to get the shot, I won't be taking precautions for anti vaxxers or the nerds and doomers who are enjoying the pandemic. There's a finish line in sight whether the media and the "new normal" geeks like it or not.
  13. I don't read Bloomberg but I don't understand the complaint. It seems to me that now that we have a new administration who has talked about their plan, Bloomberg is critiquing said plan. Isn't that normal?
  14. Did any of you even read the article? The article is actually criticizing the scientific community as well as.. let's go with "cloak roomers" (zomg!). "Once again, the Covid-19 health message is getting muddled. Even as officials and scientists urge the public to get vaccinated, they warn that after vaccination, we’ll still have to go on isolating and wearing masks. It’s a mistake to oversimplify this way. We should be talking about using the vaccines to end the pandemic — not filling people with dread that they will be stuck with isolation and masks forever. The evidence is compelling that a strong, rapid vaccination campaign could render SARS-CoV-2 less of a threat than seasonal flu through building herd immunity." also "And yes, it is bad for people to live cut off from each other. “I have never seen my patients more miserable — I have never seen them more depressed, lonely, upset, more mentally ill, relapsing into substance abuse,” she says. With people suffering emotionally, socially and financially, we don’t need more doom and gloom. We need a shared goal and a science-based message of hope for a livable future." If you crybags had even read the first two paragraphs you'd realize the article is agreeing with you. Christ on a cracker. Bunch of teenage girls more interested in being outraged than actually reading.
  15. So my maxed out Pompeo SoS NO bet, AKA the @Chewy's Hairy Horn bet, is at .98 now. I pulled all my other winnings out but I think this will be my fuckaround money. Anyone see any decent bets to park money? I like "More than 9 SCOTUS Justices in 2021" NO at .90, but I'd like to see if I can find more than 10% annualized. Everything out there now is so long-term, it might not even outperform $SPY. And I don't want to tie all of it up for 11 months. I'm eyeballing Yang for NYC mayor at 36 cents.
  16. My septic pump just burned out so this hits close to home
  17. The Trump kids all crying is a pretty telling image for me. I don't recall any other children of the president having such a strong reaction. While they were rich, they were also never considered serious people in serious society nor did they really have any sway with the real power brokers of the world. They are more Vince McMahon than Charles Koch. Carneys with money. The crying is reality setting in that it's back to carney world for them. Sure, they can make basically endless money off of their base. But they will forever be pigeonholed in with the QAnon white trash crowd. The royal family of the shit heap. The people who picked up their phone calls because of the power of POTUS won't ever do that again. The people who saluted them because they had to won't ever do that again. It's back to carney land and they know it. I imagine that's very tough to deal with. You hate to see it.
  18. God I hope that Trump's letter to Biden makes its way to the public eye sooner than later.
  19. I was thinking along the same lines, and there would definitely be some positive to come from it. The Republicans would have to claw the suburban white vote back from the Democrats which would mean some moderation and a shift left on a lot of policies. We could end up with both R/D getting pushed left a bit, with a progressive D party, a shitlib/centrist R party, and the lunatics in the Patriot party. I'm not sure it's worth it though, just for the risk that the Patriot party gain traction and get real footing. They'd almost certainly put some numbers on the scoreboard in the House, and they'd have a not-insignificant number of senators as well. That can't happen. I also wouldn't vote for any existing Republicans (minus the very small handful that didn't enable Trump) even if they did moderate the party, because fuck them.
  20. Blowing up the Supreme Court and letting Biden nominate nine new justices to own the libs
  21. Where does the responsibility lie if the pool company hits an underground power line? My company appears to have cut the underground line running to my septic tank. Line was not on the survey or marked. Am I SOL? I'm looking at a couple grand to fix.
