Today I finished the book Alsos (1947) by Samuel A. Goudmit. It's the story of the ally forces in WWII chasing down the German scientists as Allied forces advanced through former German held territory trying to uncover how far along the Nazis were in their quest for an atomic bomb. Towards the end, there is a chapter titled "It Can't Happen Here". Well, here is a timely excerpt from the chapter that everyone should pay attention to:

"Here in America we have no Nazi doctrines to interfere with the progress of science. Nevertheless there are certain symptoms among us that deserve further thought. There are well-meaning but misguided souls who would hamper the progress of medical science by enacting anti-vivisection laws. There is no difference between Tennessee's law against the teaching of evolution and the Nazi ruling against modern physics. We do not select Nazis to teach at our universities, but some racial discrimination does exist. Of course such discrimination is not imposed by our government, but faculty members, deans, presidents, and boards of regents can be quite effective in their own way. If such discrimination persists and increases, it may reach the danger point for American science quite as much as Nazism brought about the deterioration of German science."

These words were written nearly 80 years ago but we seem to have forgotten everything since then.

Here's the book in case anyone wants to check it out in more detail. It's fantastic.
